Frankly Adele, it was the English tradition that got me started on Chestnuts. You know, Dickens and Christmas. I was maybe 10 or so and I just had to have roasted chestnuts. Had to. Around Christmas time they used to have a guy on the corner roasting them and serving them out of his cart on Main Street in town (Bethlehem). It was a sad day when he stopped coming. Came the Malls, and away went downtown business. He disappeared from his corner and I never found him again. I understand in New York they still have the occasional cart vendor though around the Holidays.
But yup! So much of my holiday memories are centered around good old English traditions! Roasted Chestnuts. Christmas pudding. Roast of Beef with Yorkshire. Marrow toast. Yummmm.
