About to embark on another Great Adventcha! This time, truly, into the realm of the unknown ...

On a daily basis, for the next 5 days, I will try to keep those of you not present abreast of the happenings. Off to Asheville's Greyhound depot shortly to pick up a wayward Gatherer, then will swing on down to the Geneva to drop off some stuff & lend a hand ... then, home to bed to try to rest before a frantic four days of, hopefully, fun & frolic!

The Guide, this year put together by Mary G., Stephanie, & Chris ...

Safe trip to all Gatherers either on their way on getting ready to trek to the beautiful mountains of NC. I'm heading out the door in just a few myself - headin' west toward Cantuckee (well, a little south of there I reckon).

SAFE JOURNEY ALL!!!!

Prelude: Weather is fine! Last evening, down at the Geneva, everything began to seem familiar again ... the glow of the sun on those stunning cliffs, a Gathering Place room at the Geneva ... filled, as usual, with items of interest for raffles & the benefit of a little blind girl - paintings, baskets, posters, wampum, videos, books ... and best of all, familiar faces ... Jayne, Karen, Chris, Marc, Cherie, Ann, Bill ... folks were arriving, from as far away as Hawaii.

On to the real thing today!

It is going to take me a while to find the words to describe this past day. The emotional spectrum, for me, ran the gamut. There have been many superb days over the span of time that we've been having these Gatherings, and yesterday's ranks right near the top ...

CRP was beautiful, as always; the 18th Century competitions much better than I had expected - everyone had a great time there, but Nathan, that little punk! "ran away" with the prizes ... congrats, Nathan!; and Bill Miller ... WOW! To say I was surprised ... well, astonished maybe .... what a magical high note to end this year's First Day of the Fifth Annual!!!!

Rich, there was almost too much to do in one day. I am exhausted! I had elected to skip the river trip, so now I get one day's rest. I need it! It couldn't have been any better.

I heard how well the first part of the day had gone, especially the 'Mohican Games' ... Lucky was I to join up for the evening at Spirits on the River! Seeing everyone was predictably pleasurable, though I REALLY missed seeing those who were not there .....
Truly, every single person brings something special to the group dynamics & when absent, it is felt.

You all would have LOVED the SOTR evening! Great food & greater entertainment. Bill Miller was absolutely WONDERFUL!!!!!!! Very talented, very gracious, very nice guy. I'd urge you all to look for his CDs (amazon.com has them) & buy!!!! You won't regret it. Unique blend of music ... AND we were doubly fortunate to be joined by native dancers from Cherokee. They volunteered to perform for free when word got out Bill Miller would be there. He's THAT good! And so were the dancers!!!!!

Great night ..... I truly wish you all were there.

You bet, Jay. Would be happy to have you! Hooker Falls Parking Lot - 8AM - Dupont State Forest. I'm really exhausted - please check Dupont State Forest for directions! Look for the flags [vehicle flags] when you get there. Wouldn't surprise me if we're running a tad late!

Come to the movie, too, if you'd like. It'll be a freebie - theater's all paid for & we've got some room!

Off to bed I go!

Day Two:

They keep getting worse! she said with a big grin on her face. Yes, someone actually had the nerve to say that about our dear old Mohican Gatherings! Jeez! Followed it up with, so what do we do next year? These Gatherers, such kidders!

You see, we spent a long & strenuous day out on the Nolichucky River, deep inside the East's deepest gorge, with absolutely perfect weather keeping us company. I can't begin to describe, yet, just how gruelling that was - Death March? - had nothing on this ... but, the joy! It was a fabulous day! I can't remember the last time I was this sore. Probably back when I was teen-ager after a tackle football game ... with no pads!

All I can say is, Wow! And, now today we get to do the Death March ... Yeah, she was right; they do keep getting worse!

Sorry, no on-the-river pics yet ... I didn't dare bring my good camera, and a good thing, too. I, as did many others, did get to go "swimming" on several unexpected occasions! I did bring a disposable, and, somehow, it seems to have made it unscathed. More than I can say for me!

Some folks meandering about outside the USA Raft outpost ... before the adventcha!

Hi guys! This is my first time posting on the new message board so I'll try to get it right. Just wanted to tell you we are having a great time but it is wearing us out! (As you can see I have elected to skip Table Rock this morning and will join the crew later in the day.) I don't know when I've been so exhausted or sore... the funyak down the Nolichucky is what did it, and I haven't recovered! Would you believe I almost fell asleep in the movie last night???? THAT's how tired I am!!!!!!!!!
All of you who were not able to make it this time are certainly in our thoughts and you are missed. ALthough we have enjoyed seeing new faces, there does seem to be a void without so many of the old ones.
Thanks for all of your thoughts and messages, and hopefully you can join us next year.
By the way Rich, in the picture of old and new faces, just what are you trying to say?! OLD?!!!! Humph!
:)

Day Four:

This one says it all! What more could I say? The real Final Scene ...

Name that cheek ... the new frontier game!

We had a blast! Much to my satisfaction ... and somewhat to my surprise, this was a most excellent Gathering! It was great to see the "old" Buds [sorry, Steph!], and a whole slew of new characters have been added to the Gathering tapestry. What a crew! But, as Steph has said, there was a void there ... each & every one of you who has ever walked these trails, was missed ... dearly!

Much more to come ... but first, recuperation & reflection!

OK!! Now I`m really upset that I couldn`t make it to G2002!!! A breechclout lifting contest and I wasn`t there to compete!! Hahahaha

Oh well. But aside from that, it looks like you all had a wonderful time, even with out the Menard Clan! And let me tell you all one thing. I got a little package in the mail Sunday and I opened it on the way to work. Inside was my very own copy of the Program Guide and from inside it, fell a post card from NC with many signatures on it. I felt this big lump in my throat as I read and then down at the bottom Karen Williams wrote, "Told you we would be thinking about you". Well, I lost it then. You guys really know how to make a grown man cry!! I picked up my cell and called Cyndie. When I read it to her, she started crying too! You guys were really missed very much by us this weekend. More then you will ever know.
I had a cast meeting and an acting class to make Saturday nite in Dallas. I worked Friday nite and after an hours nap Saturday morning, Cyndie drove the 5 hours up there to a friends house. I rested a bit more there and then we made the meeting. We got back to her house around 11:00pm and she had supper for us. Then after another hour nap, Cyndie and I drove the 5 hours back home. (we got back at 6am Sunday morning) I then had to be back in the plant for work at 4 Sunday afternoon. It was a tuff weekend for us too and one of the reasons we couldn`t make it this year. I get to do it all over again this coming weekend. Maybe then I`ll be able to tell you I got "THE" part and give you all more details. At this point you all know as much as I do.

Keep posting your thoughts on this years Gathering as it`s the only way those of us that couldn`t make it, can feed off you excitement! It`s almost like being there with you! Well, almost. <BIG GRIN>

Stephanie / Clabert & Co.,

For an overpriced "souvenir" CRP picture frame we get a "priceless" 'piece' [pun intended] of art... Thinking of naming mine "Shooting the Moons"

BTW, Debbie, Bryan (our nephew) and I got back safely if not very late in the morning. Bryan told us his favorite movie is the LOTM.

Also want to thank Rich F., Eric H. and everyone else for all the wonderful memories.

Seamus, I must say that I PERSONALLY inspected all of those breechclouts and none of the wearees had on any conventional underwear. Clouts and skins. That's it. Now admittedly a clout or two were custom tailored to fit, leaving less material 'tween the legs so to speak, but all were worn appropriately with no 21st century additions. Honest.

More later on this truly wonderful Gathering, but the MacLeod and I are exhausted from our day's travel. Besides, we have to get up early to start planning the 6th and Final...

SO - "Name That Cheek" is the new frontier game, eh, Rich??? Well, I'm only a first-time Gatherer, but I'll take a stab at it! First, on the left, we have Marc Harbison. I'm not sure of the identity of the lady, but I'll take a guess & say Cherie' maybe??? Next we have Claude Williams and finally, on the right, none other than Stan Golden. OK - how did I do?!

I certainly am sorry that I wasn't able to take part in all of the final day's events - especially after seeing this picture! Unfortunately, even though I'm still about 25 in my mind, my body knows the real truth & I had finally pushed myself to my physical limits! I knew in my heart that I just didn't have the strength to "climb" up on Table Rock - or any other rock, for that matter! - and even the relatively "level" hikes at Linville Gorge would be more than I could attempt at that point. However, I plan to work on increasing my overall strength & endurance in preparation for NEXT year's Gathering, so that I don't have to miss one single thing!

Great job, Rich - well done! And a big "HI" to all of the other Gatherers from this year's event. You're all very special people & I miss you so much already!

SEE YOU IN JUNE!

Hi Everybody,

Cherie' and I arrived home safely, if not wore out, a couple hours ago. We had an incredible time and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves! For those of you who could not make it... I hope you can make it to next year's Gathering.

I'd like to thank everyone for a wonderful time (particularly Rich and Lainey). I can't tell you how much fun I had trekking around in full gear. I would like to especially thank Clabert for his help and encouragement. It was more fun than I anticipated. I had a great time talking to people about the equipement and clothing, and some of you know how much I can talk... sorry.

Diane - Well... you got the first and last one right! You'll have to try again with the middle two. I won't give any hints though.

Marc
