I think she possible would have been saved (or killed by Magua) and if she were, well....she'd be disturbed for a while I'm guessing, while having the comforts her sister offers.

The leaves were long
The grass was green
The hemlock-umbels tall and fair
And in the glade a light was seen
Of stars and shadow shimmering

Magua wouldn't have killed her. She softens his macho attitude right before she jumps, remember? Magua obviously saw something in her that made him think twice. If he was going to kill her I believe he would have done so before leaving the village to get even with the Sachem for his decision.

C'mon seriously, I don't think Magua would have gotten the chance to kill her even if he intended to. At the ending of the movie, Hawkeye and Chingachgook were running up that mountain like blazing fire to catch up to Magua. They would have saved Alice before Magua could attempt to do anything to her.

I think she would've been saved by Chingachgook and Magua...in fact just a few seconds later Chingachgook kills Magua...anyway the decision to join Uncas is soooooooo romantic!!

I agree that Chingachgook and Hawkeye would have soon caught up with Magua's party. My thought is that with a living Alice as a hostage on the cliff, Magua might (by threatening to push Alice off) force the would-be rescuers to throw their weapons away, or at least back off of the pursuit. Alice was not in good shape physically or mentally, and would have been an encomebrance to Magua's party.

The fate of captives who substantially delayed a war party was generally grim. If Chingachgook and Hawkeye did not make a successful rescue within a few days, I'm afraid that Magua would decide to remove the source of the delay.

This is how I would script Alice's final scene: The camera begins with a general view of Magua's war party.
Alice lags behind. Magua demands that she speed up. Alice stops in her tracks, and says "I'm not walking another step!". The camera shifts to a spot behind her back looking towards her. We see Magua over her shoulder in the middle distance. Magua runs toward her. As he closes in, we see the rage on Magua's face. He draws his knife and Alice begins to back away from Magua (and closer to the camera). She pleads "No, Nooo..." and shakes her head violently from side to side. She continues to retreat until the screen is filled with the sight of her long blonde hair swinging left/right, left/right.

The camera backs off, and we see that the swinging hair is now Alice's scalp, held aloft on Magua's coup stick as he strides through the forest.

Oh man. Dark woods that was so aweful. I mean I know how violent real war parties were but still....I think that scene would have turned me off of the movie. I think the movie had enough graphic content in it (including a brief scalping scene). To end the movie is such a bloody way would have been horrible. At least with MM's ending Uncas and Alice kinda die in a way that screams romance. But on the subject of my vote...I think Hawkeye and Chingachgook would have saved her and perhaps Chingachgook would have taken Alice under his wing and been like a father to her.

Okay Okay, here is a script of a less horrible ending for the scenario where Alice does not jump.

This is how I would script the movie's final scene: The camera begins with a general view of Magua's war party.
"You have delayed us long enough! You can stay where you are. We are leaving!".

Magua and his warriors take off at a run. Alice is left standing alone in the forest. LOTM ends, and the stage is set for a LOTM sequel. "LOTM returns--The search for Alice"

Much better Dark Woods. As least with that ending, we would have more to look forward too. Hey, you know what would be another good ending? Magua stabs Uncas and throws him off the cliff, and Uncas falls into the water and survives both the injury and the fall. Then everyone lives happily ever after. Wishful thinking huh!!

I like Silentthunder's approach of having Uncas survive the fall. Here is another "non-horrible" ending that doesn't require Magua to leave Alice in the forest.

Alice sits up suddenly, eyes big as saucers as she surveys the night camp of Magua's war party. Gingerly reaching her fingers for her head, she is reassured to find her hair all there. It was only a dream--yet perhaps a warning! New determination comes over Alice, and she tells herself "Whatever it takes, I will keep up with the warriors. I will survive this!"

We become what we think about.

Hmmm. Ok For your first "not so horrible ending" I don't think it would be realistic enough. With as twisted as Magua's heart was I think he would have killed her before he would leave her standing in the woods. The second "NSHE" is a little more believable but in all honesty....I can't see Alice becoming brave or strong. Throughout the entire movie she is portrayed as this very weak and frail person...I think it would be hard to buy her snapping into this strong person. Perhaps if she acted like she was getting stronger throughout the movie it would have been a very awesome ending....but you would of course have to go with the Uncas surviving the fall and injuries (give Alice a reason to be strong)....those two elements together in the movie would definitely bring you to the edge of your seat.

Dark Woods, I must admit you and Chasis22 had me laughing so much I thought I was going to pass out. I loved your stories, but the best one was the story about Alice having that dreadful nightmare about her scalp being gone. (very original) When I read your revised version, I thought you were going back with the original one. Instead, you did a great job with the last story because you were extremely creative. To be honest, you should definitely consider writing novels/movies. I Loved It!!

I would love to read more if you have any okay....

After the discussions about Uncas and Alice's romance, I've looked at the movie twice just recently. I honestly can't find any romantic interest between Uncas & Alice. He only touched her about three times that I remember--when he was setting the horses free, when they were in the burial ground, and when they were under the waterfall. Those times it seemed as if Uncas was just being kind (giving her an explanation as to why he was setting the horses free, pulling her down so she wouldn't be seen, and preventing her from walking to close to the falls as to be seen by Maqua's party. Sure he stroked her hair, but that was "kindness"---I believe he could see that she was not a strong person).

When she through herself over the cliff...I think it was only because she was distraught and did not think far enough ahead to realize that she might be saved by Hawkeye and Chingachgook. She was such a weak person....and probably could not see beyond the misery Magua would have inflicted upon her. And I do think Magua would have done that...either to drive her insane or to make her strong.

I love a good romance as much as anyone, so PLEASE tell me where you Thanks.

Oh no! We have another anti-Uncas and Alice Romancer in the room. Ok Lurking Huron. Yes there are plenty of ways to interpret the whole thing between Uncas and Alice but I will give you one scene to look at that was really the kicker for me. When they are heading up the river and Hawkeye is asking Duncan why Magua was so intent on killing Cora you will see Uncas look back at Alice with such a look that can not be mistaken for anything but interest. Now as far as Alice's feelings go....she had pleanty of reasons not to jump....but when I see her look over the cliff at Uncas' body and then at Magua, I was not suprised at her decision. She chose to be with him in death. Watch the movie again and keep an eye on those scenes and tell me you don't see it.

Thanks for your reply, chasis_22.
1) that scene you speak of with Uncas "looking" at Alice.....it looks very out of place to me. In fact, I think I read someplace that the cameraman had earlier tested for lighting and focus or whatever it is thry do, and the pic of Uncas was so good (yes it was, yum!) they inserted it in at that point. Look at it again...Uncas is focused but the background isn't. In the other shots, both people and backgrounds (more) are focused.
2) when Alice "look(s) over the cliff at Uncas' body and then at Magua",I feel she was simply sizing up the lessor evil----to die quickly by jumping or die slowly from Magua's brutality towards her.

Take it easy Chasis! Perhaps people are opposed to the views about the Uncas Alice relationship. But I know that with all the snappy comments people are starting to become annoyed with it. This is a fictional romance we're discussing. Relax and have fun!

Well for starters Light of the Moon my comment wasn't snappy. I was giving LH6217 the thumbs up. That was (believe it or not) a genuine "congratulations". As I have said before in other posts I see it from both angles. You know it really is a shame that everyone is arguing now. I use to have fun at this site but now you can't post anything without someone turning your words into something else. Although I will stand by my words in my post to elain. There really is no need for the rudeness.

...and again I say, but with a little more force: Easy, Ladies! Take it easy now.

Light of the Moon,
It is my opinion that you are one of the people who is causing a problem in these threads. I think everyone else could tell, as I could, that Chasis 22 was being very tongue-in-cheek with her responses. For example, I knew that she was having fun with me over the rotten tomatoes line, and I laughed right along with her. She was not being snappy at all with her remarks to LH6217. You, however, are toeing the line, and I must ask you to stop it now.

If you can continue this discussion in a reasonable manner without poking your finger in someone's face, then you are most welcome to be here.

I am here, WW....over here...leaning against this big pine tree, quietly observing......I am here, and I've got you covered.

While I am not a Moderator on this particular Forum, I am a Moderator on others, and I do advise when I am asked. I have been asked......so here goes.

People...the key word here is 'civility'. I would like to remind everyone to be polite and civil to all on this Board, as you would want them to be to you. While we might not agree with someone's points or their views on a given subject, this is not a reason to be nasty or condescending. If you have a problem with something that someone writes the best thing to do is to write to the person privately not incite a flame war or to publicly insult that person. Personal attacks will not tolerated on the Board. If you do not agree with someone's documentation or theories, we can have civilized discussions on the matter. Everything has more than one possibility, and there is room for all sides of an issue. If you cannot be civil, then do not contribute. You do not have to agree, you only have to respect the other person and their opinions.

Moderators have the power and authority to lock topics, recommend suspension or outright banning for egregious violations. Rarely called upon to enforce it, it can happen. We all hope it never comes to that point.

There have been some instances in the past which have caused serious rifts and driven good folks away from Mohicanland. I don't want to see that happen again. There is room for everyone.

Now..........that having been said, let's step back, take a deep breath, think about how you can get your point across civilly, and we can then have a good debate.

.......and put those damned tomatoes down.
