Let's not forget that the battle at Gettysburg was in full swing on this date also. That battle's outcome saw Lee move back south and ended his drive northward. I could be wrong, I am no CW historian or literate, but it may have been ONE of the bloodiest battles, if not the bloodiest battle in loss of Americans (and I call both sides Americans) of all.

I can never imagine campaigning in the July heat and mugginess in woolen uniforms no matter the battle or the year. Give me cotton every time!

: forced to fall back into Arkansas.
