Not to mention t-shirt design and coordination, nametags, etc.! Lots of tasks to do and it's not too early to start planning. :-)

Yes, all those things ... and probably more!

Received my first response to the queries I mentioned above. This would be from Chimney Rock Park and it is not very positive:

Based on the time it took to get the Skyline trail opened to Exclamation Point, the date of June 2012 does not look feasible.
Sorry my info is not more helpful, but presently there is no work being done and it will be a very time-consuming project if/when it gets underway.

Too early to really tell, but at some point, we'll have to decide whether it's worth a breakfast and half day to visit, or to forego it completely as was done this year ... will keep an eye on it.

That is similar info we received when we went last month on a side excursion. I was trying to get some insider info and the gentlemen with whom we were speaking said that there is a chance the upper trails may NEVER reopen! Hopefully, this won't be the case, and we'll know more as we get closer to that time....

That's similar to the responses I've received as well. Recently when I went to the public input meeting about the future of the park, there didn't seem to be any plans nor any interest among the planners in reopening those trails. They kept pointing to new areas and new trails on the map, but I told them that LOTM wasn't filmed on those trails, and that they should reopen the existing ones. MANY other people were saying the same thing, but I heard that one of the reasons they can't open *our* trails is because there is still an ongoing legal battle over a child's death that occurred there. Sad, but maybe once that gets finalized they will reconsider.

Rich... sometime last year when I heard that our trails at CRP were closed, I called to speak with someone and the response was a little misleading regarding the accessibility of movie sites. I'm sure they've been told to put a positive spin on things, but it really was a bit misleading. I went in person to check it out for myself and it was so sad to see how much of the park was closed off.
If I'm not mistaken, there is ONE site from the movie that you can see, and it's at Exclamation Point. It's only a frame or two in the movie, when the girls are being led uphill by the Hurons and it looks like sunset. I *think* that's at Exclamation Point, but it's such a minor shot that I'm not sure it's worth the admission, etc. If I remember correctly, you can't even view the falls from the trails that are currently open, so within the park the only view of the falls is from the bottom. So... maybe take a field trip over there and see what you think. :-)

Second Response ---> This time, from the folks at Davidson's Fort: The board of directors are interested in discussion this with you, I'm sure we can come to a mutual agreement.

GG and I are meeting for lunch today -- afterward, we will drive on over to look at the site. See: A Place for Mohican Games?

Sounds interesting! And I'm sooo jealous of your lunch with GG, almost a mini-Gathering. Have fun and let us know what you think of the site. One thing for certain, it's easier to find!

The fort is still under construction, but it should be finished well before the summer of 2012. It is a blockhouse with a vertical log pallisade. Now, if we could get some cannon we could reenact the siege of Fort William Henry! And somebody could be on the walls yelling "Hello boys". And somebody could be playing the fiddle. And somebody could be in the blockhouse swapping tongues like Hawkeye and Cora.

Here is a link to their web site:

Obviously this was before last Spring's event:

And while we're at your fort, what if the Indians attack our homes? What then, lieutenant?

Got any roller skates?

Or maybe a stripped skirt?

Me? I'll be in the big tent listening to those cute little Abenaki kids sing the Te Deum.

Excellent choice, Fitz. Youll find me there filling in for the lead chime player. Ill be breaking it down on that chime like it's nobodys business.

Third Response ----> Heard grom Merwin Gross, ex of Blue Ridge Motion Picture Studio. He'll be keeping us posted on the progress of his new studio, a possible venue for the showing of LOTM on the big screen in 2012.

This whole thing will have to be placed on hold - for the time being, at least. Of course, it's still a long way off, so no real harm done ...

First of all, not even sure this site will be here then, but mostly, I have personal stuff to deal with and settle between now & then ... Hopefully, all will work out in the end.

I was up at Fort Watauga (near Elizabethton, TN) yesterday. This would be a great place for a Gathering site. The good things are the fort itself. It is everything that Davidson's would like to be and never will. The bad, or at least problematic, things are that it is a Tennessee State park and may have a problem working with a private organization, and it is a hour's drive from Asheville. But still, it's something to think about.

Hello!
I am a new fan of LOTM, and fell in love with the film! I would love to visit the filming locations, when I came across this website and found these gatherings that happen. Since I am new, can someone (or many people) explain to me about these gatherings, what happens, how you join, etc.? I would love to see the locations with a bunch of other fans :)

I Have Got To Cancel My Involvement

Well, what can I say? I just can't do it. I can't exactly explain why - and I don't mean that I can't because I don't want to; I just can't. I am not even sure why. Back a little over a year ago, when Steph popped in at the Post Office as discussed here: Touched by an Angel[s]!, I quickly became ecstatic with Gathering juices and for a short period I honestly thought I could do this. Especially when Lady Ann agreed to assist. Partly, and only partly because of issues discussed in this thread: A Personal Update!, I began to realize that as I said 7 years ago at the 2004 Mohican Gathering, I was done with it. I am only a shadow of the man and organizer I was back in the Gatherings of our hey-day at the turn of the century. I never know how I might feel from day to day and I am quite certain that I cannot sustain the level of enthusiasm it takes to do this event justice. One thing that was always on my mind as I prepared each Gathering was to be sure I did all that I was able to ensure that each participant could - and would - have a great time. It's a draining, albeit worthwhile, proposition, but I can no longer do it with the necessary level of "Me" in it.

I am sorry to have built any hopes. I apologize for letting you down. I thought that perhaps I could, but I feel like a broken man; I look at those ramshackle little cabins - vacant and overgrown - that dot the roads around here snaking their way up to the Blue Ridge Parkway and I imagine myself in a rocking chair up on one of those dilapidated porches just a-rockin' away and sipping on a cold Sam Adams. Just being a reclusive hermit. Not the stuff of a Gathering organizer.

If anyone else out there wants to do it- to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the film's release - I have no qualms about it. If said person wanted to utilize this web site in any way, to promote or organize, I would be pleased to assist. These days, though, I'm not sure that would be to any benefit as most all Gatherers seem to have disappeared from the premises. Still, I'm here for that if you would need it.

As Gus McCrea said about Jake Spoon in the classic Lonesome Dove, "He is much too leaky a vessel to put much hope in." That's pretty much it in a nutshell.
