Politics can become ugly and I am sorry that you had to endure that labeling, Rich. For as long as I have known you, that could not be further from the truth.
This election seems far more trying and emotional than I can remember primarily because people are losing their homes, jobs and savings. My husband's company just folded up and laid off everyone last week!
I hope that all will agree to disagree, remain curtious in discussion and remember that we all need to pull together.
Most importantly, get out and vote and may the good Lord watch over us all.

So sorry to hear of your husband's job loss, Caitlin. Indeed it's happening everywhere. For many, many years there was a family-owned factory in Carlisle called Masland's, which made carpeting. After several changes in ownership and reductions in the work force, it closed for good last week. Our prayers are with everyone in this situation. |

Caitlin SO SORRY to hear about Jeff losing his job. I'll be thinking about you and hoping he finds something else very soon and hope the "new door opened" will be even better than before.
I think most folks engage in courteous debate here, but some have bordered on arrogance and even name calling which just really turns me off and then I can't even pay attention to what that person is trying to say. I have never ever thought this "place" or Rich to be racist. I will also, after this election, have a new distaste for the word FACTS. In todays media driven election - if I didn't see it with my eyes or hear with my own ears in full context - it remains an unproven "fact".
I think I am going to write in Jim Cantore for President

Rich, We all know that you aren't racist, but more importantly, you know that you aren't racist!!! I am pretty sure that whoever said this to you really doesn't think that you are racist either. It is just that when you start talking politics and your opinion differs, sometimes people say things that they really don't mean. If y'all have been friends for years, then I would hope that there is still a chance that y'all can remain friends. Heck, I love my dad and my husband, and they both have differing political views than I do. I just don't talk politics to daddy because I will never hear the end of it. Anyway, we all love you!!!
Caitlin, I hope that Jeff finds another job soon!!! It is terrible all of the lay-offs that are going on!!! Just know that y'all are in my prayers!!!

Well, I don't feel quite so bad now ... I see Jack Murtha has labelled all of western Pennsylvania as racist. What a disgrace. If that isn't a strong-arm tactic, I don't know what is. Blatant attempts to shame people into voting for a black man just because he is black ... it's the right thing to do, I guess. THAT, my friends, IS racism. |

Well Sachem, speaking as a Western Pennsylvanian, I think that Rep. Murtha is a loud-mouthed punk (for lack of a more polite description). His allegations of misconduct by combat Marines serving in Iraq has been for the most part refuted by numerous boards of inquiry, court martials, etc. But you shouldn't expect to have heard any of that reported by the 'impartial' and 'main stream' media, since it might impact how their candidate would fare at the polls. So I wouldn't expect the same media-types to call this Party-Hack to task on his latest explosion of verbal pablum.
I should send you a picture of Rep Murtha's re-election campaign signs, where they read, "Murtha, He Brings It Home For Pennsylvania". That is an embarassment, since the It he speaks of is none other than pork-barrel money. And it is truly a shame when the only thing a candidate can point to as a sign of success, is how much tax money he can grift as a form of pay-off to voters.

I grew up in what is now Murtha's district. He is an abomination, an embarrassment, and a loud-mouthed bum. I wish I could vote for his opponent.....
17 terms....here is a very good argument for term limit. This J***a** could not survive in the real world in a real job. It'd serve him right. He has dis-honored the United States Marines, his political party and all of Pennsylvania, not just Western PA.
The ONLY good thing about him is his combat record, and I honor that. And THAT......is all.

You know Sarge et al, - there really is a way to bring the media in-line and accountable for their actions. For far too long they ignore news that's not "helpful" to their bias. "We" as citizens can set-up a dummy corporation, raise funds through that corporation and buy a "controlling interest" in one or two media companies. It would take some serious money, (donations) but it could be done over a period of time. The rest of the media WILL get the message - or they can be next in-line. |

Whoops, - looks like Murtha got a call from "somebody's" campaign. This guy "steps in it" also most as much as Biden. . WASHINGTON -- Democratic Rep. John Murtha is apologizing for saying his home base of western Pennsylvania is racist.
He says in a statement issued by his office that while race is a factor in the election, "we've been able to look beyond race" in recent months. He says voters are concerned with policy differences of the presidential candidates. He also says he thinks Democratic Sen. Barack Obama has shown sound judgment and will win the presidency.
The 17-term congressman told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette in a story posted Wednesday on its Web site that there's no question that western Pennsylvania is a racist area, but that Obama would likely win Pennsylvania |

From Rush, - but about a Dem columnist in North Carolina - and "right on". Do we need to wonder why we have this problem??? . RUSH: Now, I mentioned in the previous hour a piece that I saw yesterday by Orson Scott Card. Now, this was originally published in the Rhinoceros Times of Greensboro, North Carolina, but now it has spread throughout the Internet. I looked him up on the Internet. He is a Democrat. The editor's note here says, "Orson Scott Card is a Democrat and newspaper columnist." He is a full-fledged Democrat. He is pro-gun control. He thinks that the Republican Party in the South is still very racist. But this piece... It's nothing you haven't heard before on this program. It's about the mortgage crisis, but Mr. Card here takes a shot at the media.
"Would the Last Honest Reporter Please Turn On the Lights? -- An open letter to the local daily paper -- almost every local daily paper in America: I remember reading All the President's Men and thinking: That's journalism. You do what it takes to get the truth and you lay it before the public, because the public has a right to know. This housing crisis didn't come out of nowhere. It was not a vague emanation of the evil Bush administration. It was a direct result of the political decision, back in the late 1990s, to loosen the rules of lending so that home loans would be more accessible to poor people. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were authorized to approve risky loans. What is a risky loan? It's a loan that the recipient is likely not to be able to repay.
"The goal of this rule change was to help the poor -- which especially would help members of minority groups. But how does it help these people to give them a loan that they can't repay? They get into a house, yes, but when they can't make the payments, they lose the house -- along with their credit rating. They end up worse off than before. This was completely foreseeable and in fact many people did foresee it. One political party, in Congress and in the executive branch, tried repeatedly to tighten up the rules. The other party blocked every such attempt and tried to loosen them. Furthermore, Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae were making political contributions to the very members of Congress who were allowing them to make irresponsible loans. |

Ditto to WW, it was a good article. I do have one question, since when is Gen. Powell a moderate? He was always RINO (Republican In Name Only), just like GW's dad, along with Senators Snow (ME) and Spector (PA), just to name a few. General Powell was always more comfortable with the 'blue-bloods' of the party, rather than its conservative base, and that was never a secret. When GW made him SecState, I knew that was more of a favor to his dad then his own personal choice (SecState Rice being more in-line with the Bush Doctrine).
As much as I respect him personally (for any man who is 'tabbed', automatically gets my professional respect), he showed his true colors to me in 1991, when he was 'shocked and horrified' by the way we (me, and several thousand of my 'closest friends', in the air and on the ground) stopped the Iraqi Republican Guard on Highway-8. We were still in the process of decimating them (which were our orders), when he and GW's dad shut us down. I would have expected such actions from a guy like the president at that time (thankfully his son favors his mother more in the backbone department), but I thought that a man like Gen. Powell would have been more savvy, and aware of one very important fact. That being the U.S. military, for all of its humanitarian missions, was still designed for one purpose only, to 'break things and kill people' (as my old First Sergeant used to tell us), and we always did that job better then anyone else in the world.

This reminds me of a (true) story told to me by a friend:
Back around 1990, when there was some major rioting in southern California, much of the Calif. National Guard was sent into that area to protect life & property (I think). One unit of the ANG was posted to some of the beaches in SoCal...and as this unit was doing their job, they were accosted by some gang bangers who to them to get out, because they (the gang bangers) were the "baddest gang on the beach." To which the soldiers just laughed; one pointed to his breast patch, which said "U.S. ARMY" & told the punks that they were staying because they were the "baddest gang in the world!" ... End Of Confrontation... |

So, let me get this straight ...
Our man of hope & change selects a blow-hard, retread to be his VP.
Hmmm ...
He doesn't know Tony Rezko is a crook ... He doesn't know what Rev. Wright's been saying in his CHOSEN church for the past 20 years ... He doesn't know that Bill Ayers is a terrorist ... as is his wife [Bernardine Dohrn] ...
Hmmm ...
That Chicago Bunch! What a NICE All-American Crowd they are!
And now he doesn't know that his aunt lives in poverty. The man for the people, who will REDISTRIBUTE wealth for the good of us all, has left his aunt to her squalor ... Oh, and he doesn't know that she is here illegally, either.
Hmmm ...
Just what DOES Barrack *we can't say his middle name* Obama know?
Cool and calm just might = COLD & CALCULATING, ya think?
