On 2 occasions when Magua is speaking to Gen. Montcalm, a character referred to as Le Subtil is mentioned. Anyone know who this is?

That is what the French call Magua "Le Renard Subtil" I believe so he is referring to himself when he speaks to Montcalm.

"The Subtle Fox." How cute. Perhaps it should have been "Le Renard Astucieux" or "Le Renard Mauvais" but certainly not "Le Renard De Marais!"

Although "the subtle fox" IS the literal translation; this is in fact no more than our familliar term, "sly fox".

Magua, Chingachgook, Uncas, and Hawkeye all have alternate French names. Magua is Le Renard Subtil, Ching is Le Gros Serpent, Uncas is Le Cerf Agile, and Hawkeye is (of course) La Longue Carabine. I don't think Ching or Uncas's names appear in the movie though.
