Good day all, and welcome to 'The Barracks', I am Sgt. Duncan Munro of His Majesty's 42nd Royal Highland Regiment. Since I seem to have ruffled the fur of the "Lions" in their den, I felt that perhaps us 'Right Minded' types need a place to sound off (without hurting anybody's feelings). Now this barracks is an OPEN FORUM (just like a real military barracks, something of a 'homecoming' for those of us who wore the uniform at one time), and any topic is available for discussion. The only rule is that, if you pack emotional baggage, please check it with the corporal of the guard. We are all Soldiers of the King, no matter what our title may be (Regulars, Rangers, Provincials & Milita), and therefore do not allow 'feelings' to govern political or intellectual debate. This is the price of being professionals. Now, this does not mean that we cannot grouse (every soldier's inalienable right, since the Roman Empire). So please, secure your arms, stow your gear, crown your bumper and chat with your mates.
Your Humble First Sergeant,
Sgt. Duncan Munro Capt. Graham's Coy 1/42nd Royal Highlanders

Well Captain, they claimed it was an 'open forum', seems to me it was more like 'open season' on the country we both fought for and love. Anyhow, I figured we are better off down here at 'The Barracks' amongst fellow warriors.

Say Captain, I hear that up at the 'den' they are concerned for the Gitmo Detainees "status". Given their reported behavior towards the U.S. Soldiers and Marines guarding them, I vote for "Pump'em, Plug'em, Dump'em and Forget About'em". Once we take out over 3000 of them that way, then I'll start wondering about their status.

Me paenitet vero ... satis. Nemo Me Impune Lacessit~ {If you look around our site you'll discover my entry on the Black Watch AND their motto, which I thought of adopting as my own once upon a time. It's been there for years ...}
Now, with all due respect, I'm barracks busting for a simple reason. No problem having this thread here, Sgt., intended as a "sound off" forum for like-minded individuals, but to use it to mock other posters & their viewpoints, or to claim THE open forum of this board, The Lion's Den, is anything but an open forum won't pass muster.
I know you've not been posting here very long so you've probably not read the multitudes of topics already discussed, dissected, & logically DEBATED in THE open forum. Nor have you probably read my statements regarding the purpose of THE open forum, the art of debate, the rejection of sentimental "reasoning," the skill of rhetoric, or the expectation of civility. There are quite a number of us who have been artfully debating long before THE open forum was, thankfully, discovered by a broader group. In the Lion's Den, with few exceptions, these tenets of debate have been adhered to & applied. No one's feathers have been ruffled, no one has been shown to be thin-skinned, & neither have political nor intellectual debates been harmed, diluted, or driven by feelings. (At least this is true of the majority of those who use the forum; can't vouch for those who simply read it.)
All posts here make reference to The Lion's Den, which I do not "claim" to be an open forum but STATE it to be so, & take aim at views (all valid & all appropriate within a truly open forum) expressed, particularly by Europeans. You'll find that these particular posters are intellectually engaging, honest & well read - if you could move past the presumption that they are somehow America bashing you'd discover them to be more empathetic toward the current crisis & actions to be taken by the US government than many of your fellow Americans.
With that I invite you to return to the Lion's Den & truly engage yourself in the art of debate - where logic reigns & sentiment withers - THE Lion's Den Open Forum. I look forward to it. (And I promise to bust barracks no more!)

Lainey, You are correct in the statement that I have not been posting here very long, or have been a member long enough to read the posts dating back to May (or before). I have been here long enough, however, to notice that even though I answer questions or points of contention with my own counter, the same is seldom done in return. Any of my points of contention are met by not addressing the point, as I do with theirs, but instead to take it in another direction. This tactic is called 'deflecting', and in police work when somebody does that during an interview it is usally because there is more to be found under the surface or because their alibi will not hold up to further scrutiny. Now, with that being said, I will return to 'the den' to exchange pleasantries (genuine, I'm not being sarcastic), but I shall reserve any serious form of debate for this particular forum. Thank you for your inquiry, and I hoped I addressed your concerns as well as answered your questions.
Your Humble Servant,
Sgt. Duncan Munro Capt. Graham's Coy 1/42nd Royal Highlanders

Oct. 23 — Authorities late Wednesday issued an arrest warrant for a 42-year-old man they want to question about the Washington, D.C.-area sniper attacks. Montgomery County Police Chief Charles Moose said the man, John Allen Muhammad, should be considered “armed and dangerous” and that he was being sought on a federal weapons charge. Police are also hoping to talk with Lee Malvo, possibly a juvenile. The authorities stressed that these men are “people of interest,” and not necessarily connected to the deadly string of shootings. (Courtesy of MSN.com)
John A. Muhammad, hmmmmmm, doesn't sound like the right-wing-conservative-Christian-NRA-white-male wacko that the leftist media was hoping for (I believe there will be a great wailing and gnashing of teeth from the Dan Rather, Peter Jennings & Sarah Brady types). Seriously though, I pray for the safety of my badged brothers and sisters currently working on nailing these clowns, good luck and good hunting. I also wish to give a message to "Mister Mo" and his friend, you can run but you can not hide.

UPDATE TO ABOVE POST
According to Fox News, arrest of the above actor was made, at a rest stop on I-70, at 0319Hrs. EST. Most importantly is the arrest was made without injury to innocent bystanders or any of the law enforcement personel present. Good job, folks, and a special accolade goes to Chief Moose of the MCPD. His handling of this crisis in his bailiwick was a model for command level LEO's to follow, I'd love to have him apply for the Superintendent position on my own ACPD.

Well then, Sarge, I look forward to the exchange of pleasantries. (Noting that like-minded people aren't apt to engage in too much debate - invitation still stands.)

Not sure what you mean, Capt. No one on the board, in any forum, has claimed to be offended - only I have addressed the issue of civility, as is my right. We expect that within all threads, all forums, & from all participants. That's what makes our board work ...

I wonder if Phil Donahue is going to retract his broadcast statement from earlier in the week on the subject of the beltway sniper, "I know what you are all thinking, but I'm tellin ya, its a white guy, period." I'm not going to hold my breath, people of Mr. Donahue's ilk have a weak grasp on reality and more often than not, when confronted by the truth, refer to the messenger as a 'hate monger'. You see, if you disagree with 'them' its hate, however most of the violence and hate in the world is perpatrated by the idealist 'left'. Hitler's Germany promulgated gun control, curbed or outright eliminated free speech (sounds like "Hate Crime Legislation" to me), placed controls on the press ("Campaign Finance Reform", you remeber McCain's argument that it was the money that caused politcians to be weak), encourged children to turn in their parents for any 'crime against the state' (That one is coming, remeber Hillary pushing for adoption of the U.N.'s 'Rights of the Child', we bought a repreve with Pres. Bush and at least a Republican House, the Democrats managed to steal the Senate with 'Jumpin' Jim Jeffords, but no one ever wants to talk about that) and government control/ownership of the means of production (ie. natural resorces, etc.) all the above are championed by the 'left' in our country. So the next time some nit-wit on the left refers to you as a 'right-wing nazi', you can inform this simpleton that nazism (National Socialism) is on the left, and the myth of it being on the right was started by that pillar of virture, The New York Times (circa 1955).

'THE BARRACKS' G-2 SECTION:
Good morning, soldiers, I have included some interesting links to check out for the latest intel on current events. The first is not well known if you are from outside Western Pennsylvania, it is Jim Quinn's "Quinn in the Morning Show" on 96.9 FM WRRK (Pittsburgh). I've met Jim on several occassions, and he is good people. His website includes an archive section that allows you to listen to recent COMPLETE broacasts of his. The formats are Windows Media, Realplay Series as well as an MP3 format for you 'burn & go' techie types. So without further delay, here it is:
http://warroom.com/
The other link is to WTNT AM 570 (Washington DC), where you can listen to the "G-Man" (G.Gordon Liddy), Glenn Beck, Michael Savage as well as Art Bell (for those of us with an odd side, myself included), all you have to do is follow the directional links for "Listen Live Now":
http://www.wtntam570.com/lineup.html
I hope you enjoy listening to these shows. I find that it is informative and enjoyable. Well, I must go with my infantry company deep into the Ohio Country this weekend, I'll be back on Monday. Have a good weekend, and God Bless you Henry Bouquet wherever you are.

Good morning, men (I mean 'men' in a non-offensive, generic, gender non-specifc way). It is good to be back here a Fort Pitt. We had an exciting, albeit too short, campaign in the Ohio Country this past weekend. Our objective was to brigade our company with detactments of the 60th RAR, 1st Virginia Provincials, Rogers Rangers as well as a 'half-section' of a Royal Artillery Battery in order to remove a detachment of French Millice, Marines and Regulars from their posting at Fort LaBusse. After an initial French attempt at halting our artillery/supply train (which the 42nd help keep the enemy away from our guns), the field force attempted a siege of Fort LaBusse. The results of the siege were less than spetacular, but the withdraw was orderly and without insult from either the French or their native allies. The field force then encamped to the east of the french fort, where we were attacked by the enemy in the wee hours of the morning. The attack was repulsed by elements of Rogers Rangers, who to the chagrin of the French, were up and moving hours before the enemy. The 42nd attempted to lure the French out to the south of the fort and allow a main attack by the field force. The ruse worked, but the field force failed to get into position, and if not for the quick thinking of Pte. MacLean and Pte. Stuart, the detachment would have been massacered to a man. This in turn led to the rangers capturing the French commander, while he was tending his vegitable garden, and leading the French sally force on a 'wild goose chase'. Unfortunately, the French rescue suceeded, with sizable losses on our side. We then had to repulse yet another French attack, with the 42nd and 1st Virgina saving the day by a clever flanking action led by Capt. Graham (42nd RHR). Afterwards, our force depleted, cold, wet and tired, we struck camp and departed back east toward the safety of Fort Pitt. Next weekend, we depart for Fort Bedford to inspect the line of communication along the Forbes Road.

Well men, we must be ready for the march. Our mission is to carry dispatches to Col. Kirwin at Raystown (Ft. Bedford). While engaged in the march, we are to inspect the line of communication between our two posts. First days camp will be near the old Washington Redoubt, we should be fairly safe here because we could expect reinforcement from Ft. Pitt. The next day shall carry us near Edge Hill, now I know some of you lads might not be too keen on this particular stop, due to our warm engagment this past August. We will be outside of relief from either Ft. Pitt or Ft. Ligonier at this point, so a Quater Guard shall be posted and his firelock loaded with running ball. The next day shall find us near Bullit's Camp, same security orders shall apply, as per Capt. Graham. The next day, at approximately mid-day we shall arrive at Loyallhannon, where proper respect shall be paid to the manequins, or you will not be allowed to attend Maj. Grant's tea party. Afterwards, our path eastward shall lead us past Dewart's Redoubt, The Post at Juniata Crossing and finnally terminating at Ft. Bedford. So, my lads, see to your weapons and field gear and get some rest. We depart in the morning.

Ahhhh, look lads, it is the post at Loyalhanna, pardon me I mean Fort Ligonier. Remember, Captain, this was our jumping off point three years ago, when we drove the frogs from the forks of the Ohio. Those were the days we were with the 77th, as training cadre on loan from the 42nd. Most of all, I recall how Major Grant racked up quite a 'butchers bill' on our backs, on that dreaded September day! It was just pure luck, that our Shawnee Brother, Pretty Ears kept us from being burnt alive, and then helped us to return to Loyalhannon, just in time for the froggies counter attack. Oh yes, we do lead a 'charmed' existence. The Major demanded absolute obedience to orders, but could not follow his own. Do you recall the conversation between him and Colonel Bouquet, Captain, prior to our departure? I think it went something like this:
Col. Bouquet: (seated at his table, glass of maderia and bowl of walnuts at hand) Maj. Grant: (standing at attention, looking nervous, because Bouquet had to 'remind' him that this was not to be an attack, just a reconisance) Col. Bouquet: "Now, Major, if you disobey my my orders, and cause undue losses to this command, I'll rip your b***s off" (at this point the colonel cracks a walnut, for effect) Maj. Grant: (Gulps, and quietly leaves) Maj. Grant: (Now, outside of the colonel's office, standing in front of the assembled 800) Maj. Grant: (Once again, feeling confident) "Now men, the colonel has given me my orders, which come straight from General Forbes, and I wish to say..." Col. Bouquet: (slams his office window open, glares at Grant and shouts) "Dammit, Grant, quit jerking around, and get on with the mission!" Maj. Grant: (now, throughly deflated, orders the force to march out, the rest is well known to all)

Winter Quarters, ah, it is nice to once again look upon the masonry and earthwork of our own Fort Pitt. Our mission to Fort Bedford was an unqualified sucess, good job lads. Col. Kirwin was apparently so pleased by the contents of Maj. Campbell's dispatches, that he joined us for dinner on Saturday evening. The Colonel even allowed us to practice some much needed drill, since our 'spit & polish' has somewhat dulled from being on the outer edge of the frontier. We were even permitted to partake in a friendly musketry competition against some of our brothers from His Majesty's Royal Americans. The competition was tight, and ended in a tie-breaker 'shoot-off' between our own Musketry Instructor, Cpl. MacMillan and Pte. Stuart (One of the heroes of Ft. LaBusse). In the end, Pte. Stuart won the bottle of maderia wine. The weather was crisp, but not at all unbearable for the fine warriors of His Majesty's Royal Highlanders. It takes more than a little chill to deter "The Black Watch". Now, we are back at the forks of the Ohio, and in our own barracks again. I understand that Captain Graham will be stopping by a little later, to have a wee dram with his boys and join us in song. I'll must be off to inspect the guard postings, so keep the fire warm and let the Captain know I'll be back after my detail. Carry on, men.

Good afternoon, men, I have just received this dispatch from a good friend of mine, Captain Polharie (Grenadier Commander/Royal Roussilon Regiment of the Troupe de Terre). Being that November celebrates both Veterans Day as well as the USMC's Birthday, I thought it was appropriate to post it. So, without further delay:
Sent: Monday, November 04, 2002 10:25 AM Subject: THE INFANTRYMAN
THE INFANTRYMAN
The average age of the Infantryman is 19 years. He is a short haired, tight-muscled kid who, under normal circumstances is considered by society as half man, half boy. Not yet dry behind the ears, but old enough to die for his country. He never really cared much for work and he would rather wax his own car than wash his father's; but he has never collected unemployment either.
He's a recent High School graduate; he was probably an average student, pursued some form of sport activities, drives a ten year old jalopy, and has a steady girlfriend that either broke up with him when he left, or swears to be waiting when he returns from half a world away. He listens to rock and roll or jazz or swing and 155mm Howitzers. He is 10 or 15 pounds lighter now than when he was at home because he is working or fighting from before dawn to well after dusk.
He has trouble spelling, thus letter writing is a pain for him, but he can field strip a rifle in 30 seconds and reassemble it in less. He can recite to you the nomenclature of a machine gun or grenade launcher and use either one effectively if he must. He digs foxholes and latrines and can apply first aid like a professional. He can march until he is told to stop or stop until he is told to march. He obeys orders instantly and without hesitation, but he is not without spirit or individual dignity.
He is self-sufficient. He has two sets of fatigues: he washes one and wears the other. He keeps his canteens full and his feet dry. He sometimes forgets to brush his teeth, but never to clean his rifle. He can cook his own meals, mend his own clothes, and fix his own hurts. If you're thirsty , he'll share his water with you; if you are hungry, his food. He'll even split his ammunition with you in the midst of battle when you run low. He has learned to use his hands like weapons and his weapons like they were his hands. He can save your life -- or take it, because that is his job. He will often do twice the work of a civilian, draw half the pay and still find ironic humor in it all. He has seen more suffering and death then he should have in his short lifetime. He has stood atop mountains of dead bodies, and helped to create them. He has wept in public and in private, for friends who have fallen in combat and is unashamed. Just as did his Father, Grandfather, and Great-grandfather, he is paying the price for our freedom.
Beardless or not, he is not a boy. He is the American Fighting Man that has kept this country free for over 200 years. He has asked nothing in return, except our friendship and understanding.
Remember him, always, for he has earned our respect and admiration with his blood.
He is an INFANTRYMAN!
Happy Birthday to all of you Marines out there (Active and Former) & Happy Veterans Day from one to all
And one other message, to our "friends" in Al-Queda, "See You In Hell"
Your Humble Servant,
Sgt. Duncan Munro Capt. Graham's Coy 1/42nd Royal Highlanders

It almost reminds me of our most recent action at Loyalahanna several wees ago, when I was a guest of Major Grant and his"hospitality".After inviting me into the officer's quarters,I observed the mannequins of George Washington,Archibald Montgomery and Henri Bouquet seated at the table with a place reserved for me."Gentlemen,I'd like to introduce you to Lt.McKinnon the newest member of our family"Major Grant bellowed.(the mannequins stared ahead in stony silence).(Major Grant to GW)"Much as you were invited to become a member of General Braddock's family,so shall we invite the good lieutenant from that other regiment that shall not be numbered in my presence to become a member of ours"."What say you to that gentlemen?"(mannequins stare ahead in silence).(Major Grant)So,has the cat got your collective tongues?""You weren't so quiet a minute ago when you were conspiring to undermine my expedition to take Ft.Duquesne!""Stop staring at me!Are you trying to offend me!?"(Grant leaves the room with the George Washington mannequin)"Come Col.Washington,we leave at once on our mission just as soon as we have victuals". To Be Continued......

On my most recent trip to Loyalahanna for the Oct.19th film shoot,I again encountered Major Grant who played himself in the film.(Maj.Grant)"Lieutenant,I have some first-hand accounts of the battle that have never been seen before.Would you care to peruse them?"(Me)"Indeed I would Major where are they?"(Maj.Grant)"Well, ahhh,I don't have them with me(holds up a heavily edited copy of"The Papers of Henry Bouquet"Vol.II)but give me your address and I shall send them to you by dispatch."(Me)"Well what is this tucked into the spine of your book?It looks like a treasure map."(Maj.Grant)"Shhhh!"(gestures towards the seated mannequins)"This is the secret treasure map of General Braddock's hidden paychest.Montgomery has been trying to get it off me ever since we got here"(Me)"Well how do you know that he has designs for it?"(Maj.Grant bellowing)"ARE YOU INSANE MAN!?""They all want it"(faces the mannequins)"Don't just sit there, man, defend yourself"(and proceeds to slap the face of the Archibald Montgomery mannquin with his glove)"Stay right where you are Col.Washington, you're always siding with him"(Me)At this time I took the opportunity to slip out amid the confusion when last I heard a parting shot(Maj.Grant)"Col.Bouquet,you are not out of the woods yet by any means!EM

I seem to recall, during the Major's tea party, that while he was lifting the cup to the wax lips of the Henry Bouquet mannequin I heard him hiss into its ear, "I know you've always plotted against me, I will have satisfaction".

...Later that night, in the officer's quarters of Fort Ligonier, we find Major Grant busy writting his memoirs...
(Knock at the door) Grant: "Enter!" (Pte. Grant, known to the rest of the sane world as David, enters the room) David: "Hi, dad, look your wife made some sandwiches for you." Grant: "Ahhh, Private Grant, place the vic-to-alls (Victuals, to the rest of us) on the serving table." (Grant, staring intensly at the private) Grant: "Why Private, you are out of uniform! Have you sold your regimental for drink?!!" David: "Dad, I have to go to work now, I'll check on you in the morning." Grant: "Work!!!! You are one of the King's Men! Have you not received the King's Bounty!" David: "When are you coming home, dad?" Grant: "I will have you shot for desertion!!!" David: "Goodbye dad, I'll see you later." Grant: "Come back here!!! I have not dismissed you from my presence!!!" (David quietly closes the door, shakes his head, and departs the fort) Grant: (Bellowing)"Corporal, see that the guards secure the fort! I want that man brought back to me! Summon the provost to my quarters immediately!!" (The Major then looks at the manequins seated in various places within the room) Grant: "Well gentlemen, I am pleased that you were here to witness that gross act of insubordination and 'unsoldierlike' conduct. We shall convene a Courts Martial in the morrow."

Many of you are probably wondering about who this Major Grant character is.The answer is quite simple really. He is an anachronism who is kept behind glass at the Ft.Ligonier Museum(lest he taunt the mannequins)and is let out for select reenactments.EM |

Gentlemen, I am at a complete loss as to what to make of this forum. FAR FAR too many of the posts are related to modern events outside the scope of reenacting, the F&I, or LOTM, and, in my humble opinion, not at all suitable for posting here. I would think these posts are more suited to The Lion's Den.
The second big set of posts related to what appear to be fictional events, along the lines of the the MacWilliam tales. If so, then perhaps you could get Rich to find you a place outside the reenactor's forum to post fiction.
Perhaps I misunderstood but my thought was that this forum was for REAL events, questions, and issues. I realize "open" means "open" but this is a bit off-scale for me.

Pvt. Chauncey, Your overall observations are taken under advisement. As for where these posts are suited, that was discussed last month. As far as the fictional events, well they are not all fiction, they are best described as fictionalized or sensationalized (The events described, ie. Fort Bedford, Fort LaBusse, these are real events which my boys and I just attended, during the times given). As to the type of forum this is, it is alot like when I arrest someone for Disorderly Conduct, it is a 'catch-all'. All in all, I discussed my idea with Rich over a month ago, and he did not have a problem with it. As for being at a complete loss of what to make of this forum, don't worry, some people get it, some don't. I hope this answers your questions and concerns.
P.S.- It is all done in fun, with a little tongue-in-cheek humor. We Livng Historians do not have to be serious all the time, it scares the kids. Your Humble Servant,

Sgt. Munro, It appears you and Capt. Graham are the only ones who "get it" since none of the other reenactors -- excuse me, Living Historians -- have become involved here.
Also, your text reads a lot like fiction to me.
Well, if Rich says he's OK with your posting your stuff here, who am I to disagree. I just hope you realize that unless others become involved here, you might rethink what you want to accomplish here in The Barracks.
