I really want to start the book LOTM, but all my friends are telling me its really boring. I want to hear what you guys have to say on your view point of the book?

| I tried reading it on more than one occasion. It really is pretty boring. I made it through about 3 chapters and then couldn't stand Cooper's style anymore. You know, of course, that the movie and the book don't end alike. |

I read it and will say it's slow moving. Unfortunately, with present day go-go-go-go-go feel it makes for a good "put you to sleep" book at bedtime .
It was interesting once you finished it and had the chance to think over the differences between the book and movie .

All right, keep in mind that a huge nerd is speaking here:
I absolutely love Cooper's LOTM. A few years ago I started a tradition of reading it every summer. Some of the prose is indeed swollen (especially in descriptions of landscapes) and Cooper is sometimes heavy-handed with moral judgments and political statements, but it's one of my favorite books nonetheless. I find that I can't put it down every time I read it.
The sheer, ridiculous romanticism of it is what does it for me. Many of the characters' actions seem like something you'd see in an ultra-dramatic production of Shakespeare: people throwing themselves to their knees and lifting hands and eyes to heaven, for instance.  The Alice-Duncan romance is also highly dramatized, she being an ideal love interest in the eyes of Cooper's audience, and he being a "noble youth" who would risk anything (and pretty much does) to save her.
I also find the action quite suspenseful. There are a lot of chase scenes and enemies popping up unexpectedly, which makes it hard to put the book down. But then again, I'm the type of person who reads Hardy for fun and laughs out loud at Dickens.  |

LOL!!
Irishgirl my 2 teens are nuts over the new Harry Potter book as well.
The LOTM book is slow going in many places but do like I do if you want to read it.
Just skim the slow pages.

Some parts of the new HP book seem somewhat slow (a euphemism for booooring). But when JKR kicks it up another notch (whenever ol' Moldy shows up, the pages go by very quickly! |

| You could also skip LOTM and go to Deerslayer which is not nearly as boring or heavy as LOTM. It was the last of the Leatherstocking tales to be written but is the first chronologically in Hawkeye's life. It is subtitled, "The First Warpath" and takes place when Hawkeye- then known as the Deerslayer- and Chingachgook are in their mid 20's. You get to see how Hawkeye obtains Killdeer and witness his first romance. You also get to meet Uncas's foxy mom. Hawkeye makes his first kill and there is some great tension- once you're into it it's hard to put down. |

Totally agree Obi. I just finished the book earlier and wow is all I can say. I like how it ended but I feel sad as no more HP books to look forward to. You done with it yet?  |

| Nope; they just escaped from the Malfoy's house. I will finish it tonight. I observed something kinda cool this morning: I had Jury Duty & while waiting in the hallway to go to the orientation, I saw 2 people in line carrying HPATDH & both people were older than me! |

No need to feel "ashamed". I think lots of us "grown-ups" love reading the books and watching the movies too. These stories bring out the kid in us again and show what a fantastic writer JKR truly is. I swear that woman is a genius to have thought up this brilliant Harry Potter story in the first place and "Hogwarts", heck who wouldn't want to have gone there.
No one I know has finished the book yet and I am dying to "talk" about it so maybe if anyone has finished it we could set up a "Potter" thread and discuss it. Hurry up and finish Obi and we can "discuss" okay?.
Your story about those 2 people waiting in line with the HP book is nice. They have good taste is all I can say. I would have started talking "Potter" with them. Speaking of age, it was my mother-in-law who got me started reading the books because she loved them, way back when they first came out. I got hooked right away. Of course, she is way behind in the books.

Ok, Irish, I just finished HPATDH about 45 minutes ago. I'm glad it's over BUT I will miss the series. I wouldn't mind a discussion thread, AS LONG AS THERE ARE NO SPOILERS! I'm not sure how we could work that...
As far as those 2 gents I saw with the HP book, I wouldn't have been able to talk to them; I was talking the the lady sitting next to me about CS Lewis & JRR Tolkien!
Here's a quick trivia question: who does Harry Potter describe as "the bravest man I ever met"? That'll give those who haven't finished the book something to ponder. |

We could have a book discussion thread and put SPOILERS in the thread title so as only those who wish to know what happens can discuss. I know Blackie wants to know who dies as she is still only reading the 5th book in the series.

That depends on what you mean by "heavy." Deerslayer is often called Cooper's "dark" novel because it presents the author's critique of the US government's treatment of American Indians. Cooper was against the Indian Removal policies in effect during his lifetime, and Deerslayer is in some ways his reaction to that movement.
The book begins with a quote from a Thomas Gray poem about the efforts taken by Edward I to eradicate Welsh ethnic identity. Some scholars interpret the quote as Cooper's warning to American whites about stamping out Indian culture by removing native peoples to reservations.
If you're looking for a book with a feel-good ending, this is not it! |

I've picked the book up twice and put it down twice. I love to read, and very rarely go anywhere without a book in hand, but with this one, I just couldn't get into it. May try once more :) Sometimes, it takes getting in a few chapters to find your books momentum...
As far as the new Harry Potter book, I'm waiting patiently for my son to get done with it, then it's mine ... of course he's waiting on me to get done with Final Fantasy 12  |

| Are you a big Potter fan then angicx? Probably not or you would have had first crack at HPATDH. I have been totally addicted right from the start. JKR is a genius IMHO. I truly hope and pray she writes another Potter book in the future. Nothing else she ever writes can come close to the greatness of HP. Psst........I've always had a "thing" for Professor Snape...heehee |

I LOVE the Harry Potter books, which my 14 year old turned me onto. I've read every one but the last, and unfortunately have to wait on my kiddo to finish with each new one that comes out before I get a crack at it. It's ok tho...he reads pretty fast. Thing is, he lives with his daddy about 4 hours away, so I also have to wait until he visits to claim my turn! (can't afford the hardbacks right off the press, so I wait on his copy )
The movies are great too with the exception of the one that just came out... it was ok and neccessary to the story line, but not quite as good when compared with the others... My son didn't like it at all.
P.S. Snape? Yikes! He always looks like he has a bad taste in his mouth
I kinda was partial to the Weasley twins.. I know, sick huh?  |
