Do you mean the lake it was supposed to be or the one that it actually was?
Supposed to be: Lake George
Really: some lake in NC which I should probably know the name of 'cuz I live like 2 hours away from there. Canyon lake? Canyon Falls Lake? Or maybe it has nothing to do with a canyon. Maybe I just made that up. |

Why, why, why do I do this to myself? I should learn to stop answering questions when I really don't have any to ask.
Well, here's one involving something I noticed last time I watched the movie, but it's probably going to kill the thread again. The Latin instructor in me can't resist:
In the scene just before the attack on the George Road, the camera closes in on a drummer, who is wearing a conical hat. On the hat is a representation of a running horse and the motto "Nec aspera terrent." What does the phrase mean?
(Does anyone know if this was an actual motto of the British troops, or just made up for the movie? Just curious--not part of the trivia question!) |

Nec aspera terrent is Literally " No Fear on Earth", was used by the 27th Infantry.
The 27th Infantry Regiment (Wolfhounds) was organized on 2 February 1901 and saw its first combat action while serving as part of the American Force sent to quell the Philippine Insurrection on the Island of Mindanao.
Not sure if it was used by any other regiments prior to this one.

Hmmm...interesting. I knew you'd know about the use of different mottoes, Wes!
The translation "no fear on earth" isn't quite right, though. The word "terrent" looks a lot like the noun "terra" ("earth"), but it actually a verb meaning "frighten."
So we have so far "no aspera frighten" or "aspera do not frighten." Translation of aspera, anybody? (For a hint, think ad astra per aspera, state motto of Kansas. Why I know the state motto of Kansas, I couldn't tell you. Just one of those elementary school tidbits that sticks in your brain???) |

This seems to have been a very popular motto among British regiments, as well as Hanovarian troupes. I don't know which one it was supposed to represent in LOTM. Of course MM didn't let the facts of which unit was, or was not, there get in the way of his movie. |

Okay. So here's the answer to my question: "nec aspera terrent" means "difficulties do not frighten [us]." I promise that's the last Latin question I'll ask!
Here's another, hopefully less nerdy, question:
What color are Alice Munro's eyes in the movie? |

Oops...I didn't realize the website I linked above only allows links to the main page. I swear there were two different pics from "LOTM" that I tried to link.
Anyhoo, I think her eyes are brown but I'm willing to go with hazel. That means it's YOUR question, Light, and I'M off the hook. Whew! |
