Hi everybody. Time to get your thinkin' caps on.
What in the world is Alice carrying in her hand when she's riding???
We see her picking something up after the ambush -
and then we see it in her hand here with Cora and with Uncas -
And then again during the massacre -
It's small(ish) and grey, but that's about all I can determine - oh yea, and it's not a squirrel!
Any ideas???????? Do we see it anywhere else in the movie?????

Well paazau, looking at that last picture, I would say it might be a diary. And if it is, she certainly would have plenty to write about. |

Definitely looks like some kind of book or perhaps a small bag. You are so observant. I can't say I would ever notice half the things you notice. Well spotted girl. |

Well whatever it is she picks it up off the ground. Did she drop it and then pick it up or was it something that belonged to someone else? Would she have been carrying a diary around with her on her person? I doubt it. It could have been a small bag with some kind of dried food in it or perhaps a water pouch if they had such things. Just some more of my thoughts. We shall all have to use our imaginations on this one. |

That's a plausible idea Mt Man. Yea... I can see her feeling she needs to carry that with her into the wilderness.. (I'm bein' serious here not sarcastic!) More so than her diary. That'd be packed up tight in the baggage on the horse/mule.

hahahahahahahahaha Good one Seamus!! But her copy of the script wouldn't be that big - she doesn't have enough lines!!

Mmmmm.... seems rather small to be a Bible. I think they were quite a bit larger in those days, weren't they? Larger print and thicker paper than many Bibles today. It could be a Prayer book, perhaps... or a Testament of the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John).
Oh! I know! It's a Harlequin Romance novel! Poor Alice had to get her kicks somehow... |

Great pick up Paazau!!! After HUNDREDS of times seeing the movie - I never noticed that! WOW, 14 or so years later and we are still finding new tidbits about this movie.

More likely an Anglican Book of Prayer. But diaries were very common in the 18th century, so maybe that's what it is. |

For all the sensible suggestions: But why does she have it in her hand at the massacre? I can understand at the ambush, if she's dropped it (out of her pocket or wherever) when she's thrown, but at the massacre??? It just struck me as weird that she'd have this same thing in her hand at two very distinct times in the chain of events.

Would she carry it on her person rather than in her baggage though???
For all the 'way out there' suggestions: Great imagination guys! Keep 'em comin; I need another good laugh!
Mt Man can you get a better screen capture of one of them?? The picture quality on mine stinks!

The Deep Thoughts thing was OF COURSE a joke - an old Saturday Night Live schtick and the "invalid scooger" is what some folks thought Alice said when she tells Cora "Talk to Duncan, Cora. I can not be an invalid schoolgirl" |

Possibly so, since it would be something of a very personal nature, and something she was obviously fond of. |

I had thought that perhaps it could be some sort of fabric bag or holder, such as a "housewife." But I have pretty much ruled that out.
I saved the screen captures to my computer, opened them in Photo Editor, and brightened them and gave them more contrast. (Couldn't make them any larger without them getting all pixely.) For some reason, I can't upload the new image to this post to show you all.
To me, it looks like a book, as it has definite hard edges and corners. In the pic with Uncas, it looks like there may even be a bookmark inserted between the pages.
My sense is that Alice is a fairly studious type of young lady (another Bookworm, perhaps?), and I feel that she has taken along some reading material to keep her mind occupied while traveling. She could quite easily read while riding, as her horse would probably just follow the crowd on a long journey. In all seriousness, it could be a novel of the period, or a religious book of some sort... such as the aforementioned Prayer Book. |

Gadget Girl Thanks. What can I say? I'm a detail person. I only wish I'd been watching this for 14 years. Have to be truthful and say I can't remember this when it was first released. My only excuse is that my children were small and I must have been living in a haze; sleepless nights, jam in my hair, running kids here there and everywhere, school committees... some of you will know what I mean. I hired the video from the video store last year, and then saw the dvd in a sale bin a month or so ago. So there are actually still people out there who have never heard of or seen this wonderful movie. Poor souls!
Yes, and a good joke at that! Scooger???? But is that even a word???
Fitzhugh Yea, I can see now that she may have wanted to keep it on her person. I was thinking more along the lines of 'would she write in it while she was riding?' which is why I was having trouble with it being on her person. Guess it's like our calendar diaries etc nowadays, we keep them with us when we travel, not in our baggage.
Wilderness Woman You're right! There does appear to be a bookmark in it!! Great eyes! Hmmmm reading material is a very good possibility; and her horse would just follow the others, yes. That would explain why she has it both times when she's riding. What else would you do on a long, boring journey. The scenery would all look the same after a while, and there would be only so much her and Cora could talk about.
Seamus You go on believing it's her script.. we're all entitled to our own ideas. After all, no one knows for sure what it is. You could be right.
So has anyone seen it anywhere else in the movie??? I haven't yet.. |

Here are the best shots, enlarged & enhanced. The first two are when Alice is running for the horses, and it appears that something flips open on top. The third one with Uncas, looks to me, like it might be leather and is a tri-fold. Your guess is as good as mine.

Thanks MtMan! That detail's fabulous! I knew you could do it! Hmmm it does appear tri-fold in that last picture, or at least to have 3 distinct sections. That opens up whole new possibilities, but what they might be eludes me. I'll have to defer to our 18th Century experts for suggestions on what might have been tri-fold in those days... |
