He was one that always spoke of honor and duty so it would have been hipocritical of him to leave the women behind with a single injured soldier. I think he also feared for the safety of the women more than his own safety.

It's pretty far-fetched the think that any of those 3 cowards heroes who jumped into the falls would survive the "knives of stone" at the bottom of the falls.

Come to think of it, why jump at all? Their powder was wet? -- So was the Hurons'. Why not go back into the passage & fight them off there? After all, the Hurons could only come at them one at a time & Chingy, Hawkeye, & What's-His-Name all seemed to be better at hand-to-hand fighting...shoot, just let the old man lead the way with his nutcracker!

Then we would be spared having to hear Hawkeye whine to Cora, "I will find you my pretty...and your little dog too!" (Oops, I think I just melded movies!)

Maybe...but if you took out the water jump it would have lost a bit of the "on the edge of my seat" feeling to it. Plus the scene with Hawkeye and Cora was great...but it takes a woman to see that!!!!! Just kidding! Oh and what's-his-name is Uncas...I know it must be hard for you to say it at the chance of causing many a woman to go weak in the knees but we don't mind fainting for him!

I find it funny that DDL is really the main character but Eric gets all of the girls! Wonder what they would say if they could see what we write about them in here!

They would be flattered I'm sure to read what we write about them. Who wouldn't. DDL was gorgeous in this movie too and very much the big strong, brave hero as well but my heart just went out to Uncas. Just have a thing for Indians I suppose.

I love Native Americans. You should see my house....I have dream catchers, artwork, statues, etc and I am teaching myself the Cherokee language. As for the attraction to the NA men...it definitely has to be the long hair and bronze skin...and if Eric wasn't married right now....whew!!!! Look out!

How do you know he is married? That is like top secret info. They don't even mention private stuff like that on his site. Did you read it someplace? I would really love to see or read that piece of info on him. Please share your sources.

You didn't catch the way Laison (who is female) speaks about him as if they are married. There was something published, can't remember where and when, that announced a marriage.

Could be a publicity stunt (unlikely). But ya' never know!

Yeah "Leah and Eric were married". I saw something like that I think on his site months back referring to sometime in the late 90's but then when I went back to check it was gone. I don't think wanting to know if someone is married or not, is too private a thing to ask. Don't need to know to whom or anything like that, just is he or is he not. She is very protective of him but not sure what that means. They are just good friends.

"Good friends" or good friends?
I mean after all how could you get to be close with someone who is very closed door on personal life (not that I blame him) and not get involved?

9 times out of 10...we know the answer to that one.

I don't remember where I saw it but there was definitely an announcement that he was married. Maybe we should ask Rich! He might have some knowledge on the subject!

It wouldn't have occurred to him that they intended to leap into the falls, swim to shore, pick up the track of Magua's party, and follow them on the run, eventually to arrive at the Huron camp and, somehow, rescue the women. Duncan simply thought they were "Cowards!" abandoning the women to their gruesome fate, and so he stayed behind to offer Cora and Alice whatever degree of protection he could. I think that in this instance, Duncan was as brave as our heroes -- he just didn't read the situation correctly.

Well said, Bookworm! This is pretty much my take on why Duncan stayed too.

I think rather than saying that Duncan has no "appreciation" for the other men's wilderness skills, though, I might say he has no "confidence" in them when it comes to saving the women. Hawkeye tells Cora that "if they don't kill you they'll take you up north to Huron land," which leaves open the possibility that whoever stays behind in the cave will just be slaughtered. I think Duncan is afraid of what might happen to the women if they are left alone in the cave: what if Magua only wants to kill them? The plan of leaping over the falls and tracking down Magua's party to rescue the women will work only if Magua chooses to take them alive as captives.

So Duncan calls Hawkeye a "coward" for leaving the women to(potentially) be killed on sight by Magua and the other Hurons. I agree that Duncan was "as brave as our heroes" under the falls, and that he "just didn't read the situation correctly."

I also think that Duncan's training as a British officer would condition him against leaving the women. In this situation too (as at Ft. Wm-Henry) he would rather stay and face death head-on rather than take what he thinks is a "cowardly" way out. So I voted for duty.

End of soapbox. Now I have to go write another 15 pages of a term paper before tomorrow. Aren't you all jealous?

Well I think he was just too stupid to realize what our heroes were going to do. He just stupidly assumed they were abandoning the women something he had done after the second massacre himself when he was already out in a canoe and paddling away, when our "brave trio" took off in their canoes after having rescued the women whom Dunkin Donuts had already abandoned to their own fate. He had already proven himself to be a liar and was "pissed" by the fact that the guys were leaving them behind. He knew death probably awaited him in that cave, especially without our heroes to save his hide yet again.

As you can tell I don't think too highly of Mr Heyward. He did redeem himself in the end but I still think it was a "spur of the moment" decision and he had no time to back out of it and couldn't anyway, as they immediately dragged him off and strung him up to be roasted. Yet again Hawkeye saved him from his final "torment" by putting a bullet in his brain or wherever it happened to hit its mark. Hawkeye saves the day.

You know I have to say that I think Duncan offered himself to redeem any bad thoughts Cora had of him. He could clearly see that Hawkeye had won her affections and I think that had decided that since he was never going to win her heart he may as well go out by winning her admiration. All in all, I think he did it because he truely did love her.
