Yes, WW, do rent this movie -- you will want to buy the DVD!!! And don't start the movie until you have your fan handy. The whole production is sumptuous. |

Hollywood being just that, and also in the money making business needs as large an audience as it can get. A movie about battles during Colonial times, - might not attract all that many females. I completely agree with your asessment, Monadnock!! I even remember when I first saw the televison promos for LOTM, I thought the movie would certainly do well because it had such a great mix of what is traditionally characterized as "guy" and "girl" stuff. Of course, MM worked the same sort of alchemy with "Miami Vice", which blended sex appeal and violence so effectively that it drew lots of female fans, especially after the first season. That I think LOTM is a vastly superior work probably goes without saying here...
I can't think of any other site that puts together this particular combination of some of my very favorite things. I've admitted in other posts that I think of myself as a romantic at heart. I love romance in anything, provided it's well done: and LOTM definitely fits that category. However, another reason I loved the movie is that, like many of the other ladies said, I am also really interested in the historical part of the movie (even with any inaccuracies). I was one of the few (if not the only) girl in our History dept. that had any interest in battles, weaponry, or military history: so I don't feel like such a "weirdo" here, in the company of other females that also feel this way! And I also will watch *anything* having to do with the Colonial period! I think you hit on the very thing that makes LOTM such a popular film - a great blend of romance *and* action! |

I was reading Blue Otter's and WW's exchange, and even though this is off the thread - I wanted to mention it. I think you guys might like the new version of "Vanity Fair" that is out on DVD now (with Reese Witherspoon). It is a bit out of our time period, but is still really good. I thought the visuals were so beautiful! There are scenes that look like they came directly out of a PreRaphaelite (sp?) painting. The fact that a woman directed it is another interesting aspect to keep in mind when you watch it. |
