Hi all -- I heard from Diana S. "Gadget Girl" yesterday. She's spending the holiday in a place where she can't get computer access so she wanted me to give you the following update on her daughter Jordan's recent surgery: Per GG: Jordan had her big surgery at Baptist Hospital/Wake Forest on Thursday morning. It took about six hours and the doctor ended up having to remove a large part of her deltoid muscle, leaving her with a scar about a foot long instead of the five or six inches we originally thought. He took a lot out and it was an aggressive surgery, but so far it seems that they managed to get all of the growth area out. Jordan has real limited movement in her arm but is getting better every day...She has been going without her sling on for some time during the day. We're moving right along and she did great coming through the surgery. She is going to have some weak movement in her arm and she has some small issues with the appearance of the arm, but we'll talk about that and some physical therapy down the line. The doctor did not have to take any of the rotator cuff area either.
GG and Jordan seem to be doing well but of course I'm sure this has been stressful. So send up some good vibes for both of them and perhaps send some fun cheery e-mail greetings...

Thanks, Christina, for the update. It sounds encouraging! Please tell Diana when you again talk with her that they are in my prayers and that I am certain everything will be OK. I like to keep my contacts private in illness situations, however, with them not being home, I have no way to do that.
Hugs and love to Jordy and Diana.....and a Merry Christmas to them, and you, too. |

WE'RE HOME!
I MISSED YOU GUYS!!! Thanks so very much for all the well wishes and prayers. I KNOW they have been heard and answered!
Jordy did wonderful after surgery, but just last night she was telling me she was never anxious or scared or worried about the surgery because she had a sense of calm all around her and now she improves more and more each day. IN FACT, here we are just 13 days out and she is giving me what for (and BOY! ...can she give some "what for") because I (and the doctor) won't let her drive yet. She has a scar from just above the elbow to up behind her shoulder (Yep Rich, about a foot long). They did have to remove the entire deltoid muscle and were quite aggressive at removing surrounding tissue, BUT THE GOOD NEWS is, the prelim path reports showed negative margins (one of the few times "negative" is a GOOD thing) - they think they got it all!!! This could possibly be the last procedure she'll need - other than possible cosmetic ones in the future. AND NO SKIN GRAFT needed to close the incision! YAY!
Being right handed (the side of her surgery) she will have to train her left arm to do the "heavy stuff", but all her fine motor skills are intact, despite some profound numbness of the skin of her forearm. BUT - she is writing, putting in contacts, putting on make-up - all things we weren't sure she'd be able to do - not right away anyway. She had lo-o-o-ng gorgeous red hair, but we got a snazzy little bob haircut so that it will be more easy to manage for her. Sometimes when she goes to make a movement her arm will turn funky or need to be brought around from the side to accomplish something, so we can't wait to get started with some physical therapy (I'll be talking at you Kate!!!) and get those other muscles working to compensate for their buddy missing.
This child never ceases to amaze me! She had all this tissue removed and she is already lifting her arm out to the side (primarily a deltoid movement now being done by little rotator cuff muscles), making little things like deodorant application easier each day. She has had a few moments when her spirits drooped (those have been the hardest times for me), like when she first saw the scar and the area that dips in at her shoulder, but each day the dip-in and pooch-out parts are becoming less noticeable as the swelling goes down and tissues are finding new places to live. AND NOW she parades around with steri-strips and all showing and doesn't care who sees. Just when you think they will need your strength, they end up giving it to you!
This all may have been TMI (too much information), but I just wanted you guys to know that your thoughts and prayers have meant SO MUCH and that they DO make a difference!
Thanks from every corner of my heart to all of you!!! I will never doubt the power of prayers and "good vibes". We are doing as well as we could possibly have hoped for!
I hope everyone had a great holiday - we did...HECTIC...but nice!
Diana

Hi there, Precious friend!
WOW!! She's mending like a good 'un!! But then, without it sounding like 'I told you so', I hadn't ONE DOUBT that Jordon WOULDN'T do well!!!
That gal has had a wonderful attitude throughout this whole health issue - that's the basis of a good recovery. But she's also courageous, smart (knows better'n to let a scar rule her life) and she has one special moma who knows just how to get and give the right information to her. What more could Jordan have needed to get through all this? Friends to pray for her and wish her a good, positive recovery?? Well, SHE HAD THAT IN PLENTY TOO!! God knows, Sweetie, all of us who know you (and Jordy) sent prayers and good thoughts APLENTY that things would go well.
Thanks for letting us know – I’m sure I’m not the only one that has been waiting to hear how Jordan has been getting on. I was pretty sure that she most likely had it all under control but… I still needed to hear the words!
Now as for YOU, my dear, I can imagine how awful this time has been for you – having a child going through hard medical issues is NO FUN, I know. But… the hard part is over and you’ve got through it. This is now a time for YOU to relax a little and let YOUR body recover from the stresses and strains it’s been through!
Yep – I’m sure you’ve had THE BEST CHRISTMAS EVER!!! So, so glad to hear it!!!
Take care, my dear friend – and please let Jordan know how glad I am to hear that she’s in fine fettle again!!!
LOVE YE! Kate.

GG!!
It's great to hear from you and to read all of this wonderful news! But... I never doubted for a minute! Remember what I said? "You will be amazed at what she will do without that muscle!" I know kids!
Scars? Pffffft. My daughter was bitten on the face by a dog when she was 11. It required plastic surgery to stitch together a 2 inch gash just under her eye and one on her lower lip. The scars are now very minimal, but the interesting thing was that for her Senior picture she did NOT want them to airbrush out her scars! She said it wouldn't be her without them! Kids! Just when you think you have them figured out...
Thank you so much for the great report, and it was definitely NOT too much information. I am so very, very glad that all is going so well. Ya done good, Ma!
