Received from Harry Chadwick, secretary of the French Broad Rifles M-L Assoc., the other day:
The next meeting (and shoot) of the Assoc. is on December 11th. At that meeting. we must elect club officers, and also plan for the award dinner.
Recent shoots/meetings have been poorly attended, and the work of the club seems to be falling more and more on a willing few. And, the "few" are getting less and less willing.
In discussing sending this note, one of our members suggested I just make this an obituary. "The French Broad Rifles died from apathy". [emphasis added - RF]
I'm not doing that, and I'm not giving up hope, but I do believe we need to examine our involvement, and re-commit to the Association. I hope to see you on the 11th. Harry Chadwick, Secretary
This would be terrible if it were to be the end for this very hospitable & helpful group of muzzle-loading enthusiasts. I can't help but to feel somewhat responsible as I - a member - failed to create the web site, due to personal issues, that I had intended to.
Here's hoping the meeting on the 11th of December is a resounding success!

Ah, the ebb and flow of participation in muzzle loading clubs!
Dutchess County Muzzle Loaders had scheduled a building for the Christmas party tomorrow. Apparently last year about fifty people attended (This is secondhand info, I just joined this summer. You learn ignition by reenacting and using lead at muzzle loading shoots.) Anyway, since only twenty people are coming to the party, it's moved to the secretary's home.
It seems to me the folks who do most of the work in any organizations are usually end up being the same few people. All a fellow can do is put a shoulder to the wheel when you can. |

There are some of our club in SC who are also members of FBR. I will ask them what is going on. The land on which the range is located belongs to an aging relative of one of the members. Word has it that the other members of the family only tolerate the FBR's, and when she dies, the range will be gone. This would tend to limit the enthusiasm.
With that said, attendance has been off at events everywhere this year. I just got back from Fort Loudoun last weekend, and a number of people I had expected to see did not show up. But those who did had a great time. It seems that everyone has something else to do. |
