Hello, Everyone!
While on my lunch break yesterday afternoon, I decided to "visit" the waterfalls in DuPont State Forest at http://dupontforest.com and while I was there, I read the following:
quote: Public comments at first hearing The Division of Forest Resources held its first public hearing on DuPont State Forest Rules on July 9th at the Transylvania County Courthouse in Brevard. Issues discussed included vehicle access to the waterfalls and dogs on leashes. About 20 people attended the hearing. See Hendersonville Times News article and editorial. Earlier this year, Forest management adopted temporary rules. The public hearing and written comment period will be used in generating permanent rules for the Forest, which will go into effect in 2003. Written comments may be sent to John Pearson by July 30 (see contact info).
If you visit the website, you'll find links in the above paragraph to the Hendersonville Times News article, editorial and temporary rules. Some of the suggestions made at the public hearings concerned me - specifically, allowing motor vehicles into the Forest for access to the falls!!! Can you imagine?! Another suggestion was to lift the rules for keeping dogs on leases (I guess that includes Great Danes, Rich!). Let's hope that the "powers that be" will make their decisions for the greater good and that they will preserve the pristine beauty of this area and these magnificent waterfalls for generations to come.
By the way, I also read that Friends of DuPont Forest has been awarded non-profit status.
It will be interesting to monitor what happens to this beautiful part of Mohicanland!

The Henderson Times-News has an interesting article about our beloved falls in the DuPont State Forest! On the DuPont State Forest homepage, a summary of the news says the following:
NC Supreme Court rejects lawsuit against waterfall acquisition
The NC Supreme Court has declined to hear an appeal brought by area businessment against the State of North Carolina's use of the Clean Water Management Trust Fund to fund acquisition of the waterfall tract inside the DuPont State Forest.
This effectively ends legal challenges to the State's use of eminent domain to stop the construction of a gated community on the tract. A Transylvania jury is still expected to resolve the issue of financial compensation, which has been contested by the developer.
This is wonderful news! Visit the DuPont State Forest webpage and click on the link to Times-News story to read more. |

You're welcome, Jayne! I visit the DuPont page every once in a while, just to see what's going on in that part of Mohicanland. It's a great page about a very beautiful place, and I am so very happy to know that the state of North Carolina is doing everything possible to protect and preserve the DuPont State Forest - AND our beloved waterfalls! |
