Poll Question:
Gathering I was a mere 2 days. Gatherings II & III were 3. We expanded to 4 days for Gatherings IV & V. The thought has occured: Is more better?
Based on the Poll results to date, and the inclinations of your Gathering Crew, it might be possible that we'll expand to yet another day - 5 - for Gathering VI. That could produce this: a day in Cherokee [some good LOTM tie-ins being developed there!] and a day of Mohican Games & Merriment, interspersed with 3 hard-core Locations days.
Wednesday - Sunday
Again, is more better? Yes? No? Maybe? Tell us!

This year there was just too much to do in 4 days, and I wanted to do it all! The games will take up most of a day if done properly. And Cherokee? Gotta be a whole day.

Well I wondered about Gathering 3 being 4 days but chalked it up to my own Alzheimers. Who knows! That was a long time ago.
Um, who am I? Oh yeah, Stephanie Smurf

Hey, Rich,
How about another choice, such as "Four days works better for me but if you do expand it to five, I'll be there"?! I was only able to take part in 3 days' events at this year's Gathering, due to physical exhaustion, blisters on my feet...little things like that ...but I'm already dieting & exercising in preparation for next year, so if the decision is to expand to 5 days, I'll do my best to be prepared to "go the distance!"
Seriously, I have two things to consider: because I'm a little more than 20 miles from the ocean, it takes my husband & I one day to drive out to Mohicanland & another to drive back home. With the Gathering at 4 days, that means I take off Wednesday, Thursday, Friday & Monday from work. Adding a fifth day to the Gathering would mean that I would have to take an additional day off. Now, that's not really such a big deal for me but it could be for my husband, which brings me to issue #2: he's pretty much a "one-man show" as a small business owner & basically, if he's not at work, there is zero money coming into his business. In the (almost) 20 years we've known each other, I have never known him to be away from his business for more than a couple of days at the time. The ONLY exception was when we went to NC for this year's Gathering! So, if the Gathering expands to 5 days, there's a chance that my husband would have serious problems being able to take that much time off from work. Of course, I could always just leave him at home...
Those things considered, I will now cast my vote. Now, let's see, that means my vote is, um, well...do I vote to keep it at 4? Or do I vote for 5 days??? Oh, dear, I am so confused! OK, let's try this: rock, paper, scissors...

Hey now Rich! I'm older than you, but I do seem to recall that GatheringIII was 3 days. Could it be that you were a bit pre- occupied with that new baby?!?

Definitely not, Karen!
It's just common, everyday senility, that's all.
Thursday through Sunday, it was ...

Thursday thru Sunday? Are you sure? You mean you all had an extra day and didn't tell me about it? hummmmphhh! Seriously, I was reading Diane's post about dieting and exercise in preparation for next year's gathering. I have seen and heard this from various members over the years, including myself! If nothing else, the Gatherings have certainly improved our health and motivation. (among many other benefits!) stephanie

Ah, the value of the written record ... I just checked our own Gathering pages [DUH!], and there it is: June 23-25, 2000 ... 3 days! The Poll reads correctly [I had my doubts!!!] So, Lainey-poo, what says you now? About the senility thing, I mean?!? Steph & Karen, we're vindicated!
Now, Diane wrote:

Well, the intention here would be to reduce that a bit ... I maxed out this year; my threshold for torture was reached!! It's hard to leave out certain things, after all, folks, especially folks coming for the first time, want to see the locations! So, to spend a FULL day in Cherokee & a FULL day doing Mohican Games & "pigging"-out [pun intended, just ask Gadget Girl!] would leave little room for the other stuff. So, adding a fifth day seems the logical choice ... and the two days I just mentioned would be relatively Gatheringese[y] ... relaxing, full days in about one place [we would move about a bit in Cherokee]. So, even though there'd be more days, there'd be less - I project - strain on the muscles.
Now, as for the other problem, vacation time, I can't help you there. Worse case scenario, a person would have to miss the first, or last, day and only attend 4 - the same thing they'd do if it were 4 days! All win; no lose! I think! |

You're absolutely correct, Rich! And I didn't mean to whine; I'll leave that up to my husband! He'll probably whine plenty, once he learns that he's going to have to take an additional day off from work - and like I said, I can always leave him at home! Speaking for myself, an additional day sounds more & more like a very good thing. Hey, any day spent in Mohicanland beats the heck out of a day behind a desk at work, anyway!

Rich, Gathering 3 was 3 days: Friday was Tablerock sunrise and hike in the morning with the fort in the afternoon; Saturday was Biltmore with the movie at night; and Sunday was Chimney Rock which started out beautiful but once everyone was WAAAYYY up top it started to POUR! Fortunately, it cleared up in time for dinner, then we headed down to the Bear Den cabins for the finale and meet your beautiful new baby and Elaine.
I think it's a really hard call on whether or not to add another day. As you stated, people will make the days they can if they have to make a choice. On the other hand, we can't do everything can we? Good golly, we'll all be taking stimulants just to keep up.

What says you, says they ...
Weeell, since historical fiction appears to be a popular pasttime around here lately, AND since I will never be vindicated by lesser men, I'll just go on vindicating myself.
Fact: Wednesday, June 21 - the night was a bit laborious. Actually, quite laborious. And while I laboriously labored, though not to belabor the point, it was said by an unnamed, non-labor person; quote: Tonight?! *%#&%#$! Tomorrow's the Gathering. I'm gonna be exhausted.
[insert a chuckle or snicker or other appropriate sentiment here if you are female]
Fact: Thursday, June 22 - Michael Baby, not to be confused with Hollywood Michael Baby Mann, was born. Unnamed person left & headed west for Bear Den & I headed west for milk. Now, you're all being technical when omitting this day in the count. Just because you didn't exhaust yourselves doesn't mean *I* didn't. Gathering = Exhaustion, & gatherers gathered at the gathering place. Therefore, this was really Day One.
Fact: Friday, June 23 - Unnamed person left early in the morning for CRP breakfast - cooked & served. I had to make my own. [another insert can be added here if you're female] Day TWOOOOOO!!!
Fact: Saturday, June 24 - By now, I had forgotten there was an unnamed person somewhere but I DIDN'T forget about that incredibly mouth-watering lunch that was to be had at the Biltmore, but which I had to miss, & for which I was cruelly tormented by Biltmore personnel by way of a phone call going over such details, & for which I lust to this day. [YESSS!! I am penciling the Biltmore in GVI's itinerary JUST for that lunch!] Day Three!
Fact: Sunday, June 25 - Bypassing the day's details, I finally did get out & make it to Bear Den just to say 'hello/good-bye' & 'wasn't it a fine gathering' & 'oh, by the way, I'd like you to meet my 3 day-old son, Michael' {I think I might have said that to unnamed R person] & 'yes, somehow it all seemed over before it hardly began' & other such things. The Final Day. Day FOUR.
Count them - Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday ... four days. I rest my case.

Having been to Cherokee before I highly recommend it. On one of the reservation is Smokie Mountain National Park. This is a great place to visit also.
