I'm looking to get into re-enacting the F&I/Pontiac's War/western Revolution period, preferably as a ranger or scout. I live in the western Pennsylvania area, and will be at the Bushy Run re-enactment this Sunday. Anyone who can provide me with an introduction to the basics? PS: I've never fired a smokepole, but am familiar with modern rifles and handguns, and am NRA safety certified.

They are a whole different balla wax. I've not been to the Bushy Run before.. but I'll suspect you will find lots of people who can help you in your journey. Best bet is to decide who you are gonna be.. research that part of it before you ever start. I mean really look into it..where from? when born? mother? father? brothers or sisters?..how many still alive..the basics.. If you have an ancestor you can work his life over to use as your persona. Don't go buying a lot of the big items first.. like the gun.. .. you will find you have picked one for pretty ..or other reasons and not because it's what you would have been carrying in 1700's America. Check out the trade blankets and such at the events.. talk to other re-enactors.. they usually have stuff that no longer fits or is worn..Do not worry about handguns.. most did not have them back then...think about what "YOU", as whom ever you choose to be, would be really carrying in 17?? America. Buy only what you can carry to begin with.. *L* .. Good Luck .. and welcome to OUR world.. it's fun.... |

Hi Lew, I too will be at Bushy Run this weekend. Your should stop on by the 42nd's Battalion Street so we can talk. If you are looking for a good SWPA Scout/Ranger Group to join, I can introduce you to a few. If you wish to 'take the king's shilling' however, well I can help you with that personally. Either way, stop by and introduce yourself, I am normally the sergeant, but this weekend I'll be playing the role of Captian Graham of the 42nd (Since our own captain cannot be there due to a family emergency). I look forward to meeting you...

Sgt. Munro: I didn't get to meet you at the Bushy Run re-enactment, but some of your Black watch companions, after being unable to find you, directed me to the Rangers of the Ohio Company. Thanks again. See you there next year hopefully. |

Hi Lew, Sorry I missed you, but I had to attend to some command level duties with Col. Bouqet. (I will be glad to give the Captain his gorget and sash back and resume my NCO post) Sgt. MacMillan told me of your visit, and that he was able to direct you to the Ohio Company Rangers. I think you will find that they are a good bunch of guys and gals to hang with. If you are in the area to attend Penn's Colony (last two weekends in September, Saxonburg PA), stop on by and chat. I would still like to meet, its always nice having a new face in the hobby.
