Any chance there is a national campground around there anywhere. Or even a state one. LLOF is rather cheap and would rather pop a tent then rent a hotel room and I love nature (must have electricity plug and working bathroom *no outhouse*)
Also if anyone is interested I would be willing to get a camp site with one or two others. (Not 100% sure of going yet).
Thankies

LLOF, The last time that I slept in a tent was about 18 years ago. My dear husband decided that the best spot would be right below a small hill. Well, it rained that night and we got drenched!!! I told Bill that even though I love him dearly, I would never sleep in another tent!!! So, even though I love nature, I don't like to be sopping wet while I am trying to sleep. I will spend a little extra money for a hotel room.

Lol. Very understandable. I want the top of the hill. No valley for me thank you.
I have camped since before I can remember and I am also rather good at roughing it (Michigan fall/winter hunting season in a fifth-wheel). Called sitting out in the woods all day, building a bathroom (no privacy besides a few tarps and wildlife liking to visit). |

If you don't want to be in a tent the whole time, I'm sure you can bunk up with some of the rest of us! The more, the merrier, right?
Whatever happened to that Redneck Bunkhouse idea of Light's, anyway . . . ? |

I found Buck Creek Campground which don't seem to bad at 30-33 a night for two adults and 2 children under 18. Though if no one else decides to camp then it would just be little old me out there.
Which I just did some quick figuring and with their deal (stay 6 nights get the 7th free) saying we start on the 17th I believe and me wanting to be there a day early and leave the 23rd it is only $231 and that is probably a lot cheaper than a hotel room at lets say an average of $73 a night (no bunkie total) being $511. Seems a lot cheaper to me and not that hard to pack a tent and an air mattress. |

If and when I come, I will most likely bring my tent with too. Seems like to best way to go if trying to save money. So don't worry, you'll have at least me out there with ya! |

Looks like I might need a smaller tent. Don't think I need a three room tent for just myself.

There is a very nice campground at Linville Falls run by the National Park Service. This is, of course, an area used in the filming, so it has that added benefit.
As for the Redneck Bunkhouse ... that'd be my 2 room apartment! |

Wow. Camping in a fifth-wheel trailer is roughing it???
Hmmmmm... I think you need to talk to Seamus and a few others on this board about that! |

Um. Only reason there is a fifth wheel is my dad refuses to go hunting in a tent. Just think about it. Only power we have is at night when my dad runs the generator. It is usually very interesting and can get very cold (once for frost nip in under 20 mins wearing a full hunting suit.) |

Looked into Linville Falls, but I think I like the other one better. Yes it is a bit more expensive, but this way there is more allowed. Why would I see a pow-wow in the middle of the campground??? Got to look into it even more now. |

Just teasing you a bit. You see, many people consider the true definition of "roughing it" to be camping without any of the modern conveniences of home, such as electricity.
Seamus, Many Flags (the one on these boards), Pvt. Chauncey, and probably others, have done winter tacticals (way up in the North Country of New York) and hunting expeditions (in the wilds of Pennsylvania) 18th century-style. That means no campers, trailers, motor homes; no generators, no Coleman lanterns. That means a tent or canvas lean-to and a couple of heavy wool blankets or bearskins to sleep in, candles for light, using the woods for your bathroom, and cooking over a campfire. Oh, and btw... hiking or snowshoeing in to to get there.
Now in my book, that... is "roughing it."
And now, back to your regularly scheduled topic at hand...

A couple of years ago at Martin's Station, it was cold and misting rain. A couple of us had our tents set up when another of our our group arrived late carrying only what he could on his back. We offered to let him sleep in our tents, but he thanked us, said no, and proceeded to build himself a small fire to dry the ground. Then he spread his blanket, wrapped up in it, and put just enough firewood beside him to keep the fire going all night. The wool blanket shed most of the water, and the fire dried the rest. He slept that way for three nights. Now that's roughing it. |

Have to agree Fitz, - that's roughing it. Even tried using an outhouse at 16 below? Not wind chill, the real thing. |

Lol. Ok, ok. That is what my dad calls roughing it. Just remember this. I am female. The year before I went there was 13 guys in one state forest camp site (free). The year I went was, me, my dad, and one of his friends. That was it.
Sounds like the guys are afraid of the women. Just another note. I was the first female to stay in the camp overnight and actually hunt. (Gutting deer isn't the funnest thing I have ever done). |

i average about 10-15 weekends a year in a canvas wedge tent for the bunch of reenacting groups iam with. i use to do that hardcore campaigner type of stuff where you walk in with the stuff on your back and that it for the weekend. building crude shelters like a lean-too was intresting to say the least. but as i got older those weekends got to be to much, and after getting married and draging my wife along we needed to stay in a tent. this weekend we have 4 nights in a tent at crown point. i hope this heat and humidity weve been having in the northeast lets up a bit. h-b |

What's worse is when it is below freezing and the frost has formed on the inside of the port-a-john (probably evaporation from below), and you go inside for a spell, and your body heat starts to warm the ceiling, and it's as if it were raining inside! Not a pleasant experience. |
