As is fast becoming the norm, not very much to say this week. My ex-other half is still "on-line-less" - and I doubt very much she's interested beyond a tad in participating here anymore [maybe, I'm wrong?!? ] - although today's post, Mahican, Mohegan, Delaware?, by Blindman is right up her alley - being part Delaware, and all. I know she knows the answer.

In any event, it's a sad day [figuratively] for me. We had a spot of fun, to say the least, creating this web site together and always adding more. Gone, apparently, are the days of Off the Beaten Trail stuff. What fun that was! In my case, I can barely keep up with things Gathering-related no less add stuff to the site of any worth. I haven't even been able to set up the site's shopping cart, yet - and that was a $200 investment. Since this is the last [FOR REAL] Gathering that I intend to organize, as I posted about once before and as is stated here on the web site [I restate this only because I am aware that some are NOT aware ], perhaps after all is said and done - and my personal life settles down [man, it's hard getting re-adjusted to new routines after 24 years!] - I will once again find the time to invest in this place & create anew. Won't be the same without old Lainey's wit & talents contributing.

Anyway - that was not a planned message; just sorta came out - the other bad news ... Bookworm has canceled her Mohican Gathering attendance. - That really tore me up. I was soooooo looking forward to meeting her [you] this year. She is all paid up - for the entire week's worth of activities. If there's still anyone out there who would like to come, we could sell you her "attendance" so that she could be reimbursed.

Damn, damn ...

Excerpted from a note from Pearl Means, Russell's wife:

Rich:

I hope this finds you well. I wanted to follow up with you on a couple of things as I am headed for SD for Russell's Sun Dance on Sat. the 5th.

1. I want to ship 2 boxes (32 books) to you per our earlier communication. I have P.O. box 123, Marion, NC 28752 is that the best address to use or is there a street add for ups delivery?
2. [REMOVED]
3. How many people are registered. I usually order books for 1/2 of the number of attendees.
4. I will bring with me for the auction: a hard cover, first edition "Where White Men Fear to Tread" 2 of Russell's cd's, The Electric Warrior and The Radical, 2 of his AIM t-shirts, Chief Joseph and Conspiracy to be Free. I do not have access to any Mohican memorabilia. I suggested to Ro that she try to thru other sources some posters.

We look forward to our visit. I will not have email access after 6/5. Do you have a telephone number if I need to reach you? Thank you, Pearl Means

So, all is very well on that front!

Of course, lest you missed it, the Gathering T-shirts have been finished & posted. To clarify, you have the choice of paying in advance OR paying at the Gathering, BUT you MUST E-mail your order ASAP [size, color, number of, and whether you want 100% cotton or not] so that Eric & Sharon know how many of each to have made.
DO THIS RIGHT AWAY!!!

Gathering T-Shirt Order Form

And that's about it ... Visitation is "down' - to about 2600 per day. It always drops when school is out. Weird, our Bushy Run page very, very often ranks in

And I was looking forward to meeting you, too, Rich, and everyone else who's coming, especially my former roomies-to-be Gadget Girl, Christina, Theresa, Kate, and Carter. Apologies are definitely in order, particularly in light of how gung-ho I was, encouraging everyone else to come! How do you spell "dufus"? -- because that's what I feel like in that regard. Please be assured that my non-attendance does not reflect a lack of desire to attend -- desire is as strong as ever. But due to a totally unforeseen circomestance that arose last week, in the form of a financial difficulty/opportunity, I can't in good conscience incur any more expenses right now. Well, with one exception: Cherie and Jayne, the stuff I promised for the raffle and auction is still coming!!! I'm not sure precisely how (probably Rich's employer or one of its competitors), but it's coming. I will try to be with you in spirit, although thinking about the Gathering during Gathering week is going to be pretty depressing. Please take lots of digital photos so I can see what I missed!!! And needless to add, have a great time!

Bookworm,

This is sad news, indeed! But...I know well how things can come up when you least expect it and turn life and your plans topsy-turvey. Best of luck in dealing with this unexpected turn.

If you want to send the Ariel items to me to take to the Gathering, send me an email and I'll give you the address. Should still be time - won't be packing up until the 18th!

Take care, Mary. Hope we'll have the opportunity to meet one day. You're enthusiasm and generosity have been much appreciated!

OH WHAT A BUMMER!!!!! I am SOOOO SORRY not to get the chance to meet my 'roomie'!!!

I know how it is, Mary, and I know that sometimes we just have to prioritise and 'go with the flow'... Sometimes we really don't have a choice! But from reading your posts, you sounded SO KEEN to be at Chimney Rock and I'm just soooo sorry that that isn't going to be a possibility now!

However, because this is the last Gathering that RICH will organise, doesn't mean that it has to be the last Gathering. It's perfectly possible to get up a group of like-minded folks together and have a mini gathering... And with a bit of luck, there will be another opportunity for you to take part in one of these.

I didn't make the Gathering two years ago, but... I visited Chimney Rock with a dozen friends in the October. And we got together again last year... I'm pretty sure that there will be an opportunity to say 'hey' to many of the Board folks at some point.

And - Chimney Rock is a great place to visit, even if it's on yer own...

I'm just REALLY SORRY it won't be in two weeks...

Kate

Well... Must say Rich it does not surprise me that this is the last gathering. We will be sad to see it go, for we have really enjoyed the company. This was however going to have to be "our" last gathering. Lucky for us though my parents live in the area and we visit 2 to 3 times a year and hike all the spots often.

Mary, I was so looking forward to meeting you, I hope that things will be o.k. for you.

Since this is the last [FOR REAL] Gathering that I intend to organize, as I posted about once before and as is stated here on the web site

I am just glad that I will be able to attend at least one gathering!!! And even if we don't have gatherings as everybody knows them right now, what stops us from having friends getting together? It looked like the ones that went to the un-gathering had a great time. Maybe something like that in the years to come, because I love getting together with friends.

Rich,
I just want to say "Thanks" for keeping on with the planning and working on this upcoming (final and last) Gathering. With what you and your family have gone through over the past year+, and more recently your separation, it would not have surprised me if you had cancelled. But you didn't.

I hope that this Gathering will bring you joy and lots of satisfaction. It's amazing what the Gathering and the website have become over the years.

So, this grateful Mohicanlander salutes you and your continued efforts! And I wish & hope & pray for your well-being and happiness.

Awwww...Bookworm, I'm SO Sorry you're not going to be able to attend. I was REALLY looking forward to meeting you. But I certainly understand the last minute financial problems, after the past year I've been through (trust me, we won't even BEGIN to go into it...)
HATE to get this kind of news because I'm struggling through my OWN little "slough of melancholy" and can't seem to get out of it...hoping it's just stress and will melt away as Gathering gets closer...
sorry to hear you're feeling down, Rich. I'll just take this time to tell you and everybody here...you guys mean a lot to me and always have, through ups and downs...I hope whatever happens in the future, we'll all still be able to "come together" in some way. These friendships have meant more to me than most of you will ever know. So let's look ahead to a great time in the N.C. mountains. No matter what you go through, beauty and friendship can keep you going.

Peace and friendship,
Red
