One of the many joys of having a passle of kids is income tax refund time. I love you, Georgie!!! This year, a part of it went to a brand new computer system - not that it should have, but, it did. Set it up yesterday. So, I now have Windows XP, which is taking some getting used to, and oh so many things to re-do & fix up. 6 years with the old baby ... some programs which I need, like the credit card transaction software, don't seem to favor XP much ... so, a lot to do, but lovin' it!!!
So, not to sound like a broken record, or anything, but - it's been one thing after another, and stuff just ain't happening!!!
BUT, a few notes:
As I type, our newest member is nil_queen. Know who that is? Connie Boyer of Under the Make Up Tent fame. Long time no see. She was one of the very first contributors to this web site. Welcome, Connie, if you see this!
The Authors Expanded Edition is necessarily delayed - again - due to above. I figure early April now. Cover is one big hang-up for me. Those who have already ordered, please be patient. This does give more folks the opportunity to order at a discount, though!!! As soon as I get the software straigtened out, I'll update the info on that page!
Michael Williams, of the University of Rochester, did a LOTM Dissertation some time ago for his PhD. Since then, he's been trying to have it published. The Journal of Popular Culture, prestigious in its field, is going to be publishing a part of it soon. Just so happens that the part to see print first is going to be about, largely, this place!!! He plans to make it to the Gathering in June [I've asked him to give us a "formal" talk while there!] and is hopeful of having galley proofs - if not the published article - by then. Another chapter in the continuing saga. Check out the dissertation link to see what it's all about.
The 2004 Gathering is moving along just dandy. Update was posted this week: 4-MONTH Gathering Update & Checklist!. No, no MacWilliam bunch, but, a lot of good things are happening.
OH! And the mystery pic from last week was ... Kaylynn! No grand prize winners this time!
So, send me an E-mail so I can rebuild my address book!

Rich, Congratulations on the new computer. We had one for five years and then for Christmas, our sweet son bought us a new one, and it is so much more enjoyable than the old one!!! Yes, it was me that was in the photo with my little doll. That was 40 years ago when I was only six. I knew that this would be a toughie for y'all because y'all have never seen me. I hate having pictures taken of me now. I'm not very photogenic. Hey Doc M., remind me not to let you anywhere near my doll collection. Now, somebody else needs to send Rich a childhood picture so that we can continue with Fun and Games.

You are going to love XP. I fought 2000 for a long time, and finally bought a package of XP Pro for my desktop (I have XP Home on my laptop). It cures all the 2000 problems. The only downside is that some of my software will not run on XP unless there is a upgrade. I had to buy a new printer because Xerox did not have drivers for XP for my printer. Just as well. My new HP is MUCH faster and does a better job. |

Yes - I am loving Windows XP - and the whole new system. Hard to tell what makes it so pleasurable - XP [seems much more stable than Windows 98, which I was using] or the new processing power & speed - but, I like it!!!
Still trying to get up to snuff with getting everything set up, etc, but I'm almost there.
Hard to believe, this new computer cost me about half what I paid for my first one back in 1994 - the one I did my guide booklet on. That one was an old 486, with 420 MB of hard disk space [I kid thee not!], 8 MB of RAM [and that was A LOT!!], I think it was a 25 MHZ processor!!! And, this one has a printer/scanner/copier, 750 MB zip drive, and DVD burner.
I'm in computer heaven! |

Rich, did you purchase a specific brand? Such as Dell, Gateway, or ? Or was it a put-together-by-special-order by a local computer business? |

Gateway - I started with Gateway and will continue with them because I've had no problems they couldn't fix pronto. My last computer is still good after 6 years, just outdated ... I had no space anymore and it was stressed to the max with programs running when I was working on the site & board. I'm a loyalist at heart, I guess! |
