Sometimes, I wonder what the Mohican Board means to other people. For me, it is a compelling addiction ... albeit a lot of fun, a good pastime, and a creative outlet, of some kind. Educational, too! It does get depressing at times ... the fights, the petty complaints, people disappearing ... all that kind of stuff that I have little control over.
Take this AM ... I overslept ... it was actually daylight when I awoke ... first time in a long time that has happened! Then, I couldn't connect to my ISP for some reason. I felt obligated to be here, but couldn't arrive! I wonder, sometimes, if anyone else feels that, ever.
Anyway, I'm pretty much thinking out loud ... but, early this week, I received an e-mail from a person I don't know. This person not too long ago ordered a copy of my guide booklet and also signed up for the 2004 Great Mohican Gathering. That's about the extent of our communication with each other ... directly, anyhow. Apparently, this person has been a lurker ... Here's the E-mail. It greatly brightened my week!
E-Mail of the Week:
Hi Rich, Just wanted to pass along a word of thanks -- actually, a whole encyclopedia of thanks! After watching the DVD of LOTM about a month ago and being undecided about whether or not the changes were a good thing (I'm still undecided), I decided to search the web for reviews and comments. So, I typed in "Last of the Mohicans" and came upon your website. You can't imagine my astonishment -- there are others of my kind out there! Guess I should have given the movie more credit -- it was pretty obtuse of me not to realize that there must be others who loved it as much as I did. Anyway, I've purchased the guidebook, registered for the Gathering, and hope to be a contributing member of this community for many years to come. I'm mentally surveying my LOTM-related possessions to see what I can bear to part with for the raffle and auction. It will be such a relief to communicate with people who don't say "You saw it HOW MANY TIMES??? Why???" (Because it keeps ending!!!!) Anyway, it's obvious how much work goes into maintaining this beautiful website, planning the gathering, etc., and you sounded just a little discouraged on the most recent weekly update, so I wanted to let you know how very much I appreciate your efforts and Lainie's. If there is anything I can do to help in faraway Pennsylvania, please let me know. I'm a married, 52-year-old, state-employed lawyer with a minimal degree of computer literacy and no involvement in reenacting, but a fair amount of "book-learnin'" about the era. I plan to participate on the Board, just as soon as my husband and I can decide whether to purchase another computer, bring one home from his office, leave his laptop at home, etc. (I'm writing this on my lunch hour at the office -- no prohibition on reading message boards, but posting on them is NOT a permitted use.) With my very best wishes, and looking forward to meeting you and your family at the Gathering,
Sure hope you [the author] don't mind me posting this, but the tone, and level of involvement - from a person that has never posted - was very uplifting to me, particularly in light of last weekend & my failing efforts to reunite this community.
Reminds me of Rattlesnake Woman a couple of years ago, or so, who helped create another Gathering ... without even trying!
Anyway, thank you for your thoughts ...
Then there's Wilderness Woman - who got intimately involved with the proceedings - and other more recent newcomers like Susquesus & Kurt, who have nicely contributed ... along with the old-reliables who seem like they've been here forever!
Thanks!
OH! And, then SgtMunro sends me a copy of the DVD, George Washingt

Well Rich, WAKE UP!!!!!!!!!!!! HEY! DIDNT YOU HEAR THE ALARM!!!!
Good sunday update.
You know, I wouldn't get so depressed at times, as you do. I know it's hard when you have so much of your personality (and Lainey's) put into this website, and the folks who visit. But think upon these few things that come to my mind:
(1)I have never seen a website done so well, nor so extensively, nor so successfully centered around one movie ANYWHERE ON THE INTERNET as this one is.
(2) I don't believe that ANY OTHER movie derived website has lasted so long on the internet - and not only does it last, it continues to grow and evolve. That's something right there.
(3) There are VERY FEW and I mean VERY few websites that involved actors, movies, etc that are able to generate enough interest to have annual gatherings and do so successfully. Usually, it is only beloved series that are able to pull that off. Things such as Star Trek, SNG, Dark Shadows etc. It is rare to have folks wanna spend the coin to go to a gathering dedicated to just one movie. Moreover, when it has been doneby others, it has been done in a "Convention" type atmosphere. Yours is ogranized by you and Lainey with some help from the website family.....in an informal atmoshphere relatively.....without all the commercial glitz and draw. And it works. Not only THAT, but you have been able to draw nearly ALL of the main characters of the film to attend your gatherings as guests. That's somethin right there you can be proud of.
(4) Your website doesnt just stop at the movie. There is SO MUCH more here. The historical aspect alone is worth the visit, with knowlegeable contributors for all walks of life and on all subjects of colonial life. Heck, visitations jump during school year because it has become a RESEARCH SITE for a lotta folks in HS and college.
(5). People are people. We are complex. Some days we have good days, some days we have bad days. Some days we are testy, some days we are as happy as institutional inmates. Nobody can get along with everybody all the time. Everybody is not going to have the same opinions as everybody else. When controversial subjects are talked about, there is bound to be friction, especially when those opinions and stances are near and dear to the heart of the owner. So once in a while disagreements or fights break out? So what? It's a normal aspect of human nature and human failings. We keep coming back though, don't we? Why is that I wonder? Well.....probably because we all have a lot of friends here, and we eventually feel.......no matter how mad or frustrated we got over something.......that being away is harder than swallowing our pride or our anger. You feel helpless when disagreements occur, like you have to fix everything. Betty is that way sometimes too.......the need to feel like she has to fix all the wrongs she sees, or the unhappy things she sees around here.......can't be done. And, usually, things work themselves out. Don't feel helpless. You've done your part in the healing process. You've made a home for everybody that everybody wants to return to - feels a need to return to - in spite of past disagreements - JUST LIKE ANY FAMILY AND JUST LIKE THE FAMILY THIS IS.
So........ya done good. You continue to do good. It's something unique and wonderful you've done. If this website and all it involves and means was the only thing I had done in my life I'd consider it a great contribution. And it is. You've done much more in your life than this website, but even if you had not......this in itself would be a great contribution to our human experience and to the experience of others. Be proud.
That's just MY thoughts on things....... |

Holy Cow, Bill! Too bad this site isn't up for a monetary award & you were one of the judges!!! Thanks for the compliments ... ALL of 'em!
Two things ... up above, that's supposed read "This Day in History". Not "Week". I guess I got mixed up with the Weekly Update thing, and all. Something like that.
And, I fully realize I let my emotions get involved all too often ... and then talk about it. For one thing, it somehow motivates me, and, for another, I guess it lets you all get to know me better ... for better or for worse! |

Beautifully... perfectly said, Bill! Every single word of it.
As I was reading your post, my mind was running in a background track, and I thought: You know... if someone had told me just about 1 year ago that I would soon join an online community and become so "intimately involved" with it that the first thing I wanted to do when I woke up each morning was to go online to see what's going on... Well. I would have said they were just plain loco! But here I am and loving it! (Well, most of the time! <grin>)
Rich, I think that you are an extremely sensitive and caring guy. And I think that is one of the reasons that we are drawn and caught here in Mohicanland. You really seem to care about us. I appreciate the fact that you ache so strongly when things are not going quite right here. Painful as it is for you... I'm very glad that you do. For your pain and disappointment in us tweaks most of our consciences. I think I said once before, someplace, that you must feel as though you have about 50 children, at times. LOL!
So. Dad. Thanks for being here!

Oh, those Tattoo Tantalizers! I, too, am really enjoying this! The photos are great, but I especially like reading all of the stories. I love this most recent one about the "spur-of-the-moment-authentically-inspired-Abenaki-tattoo"! Great stuff! Thanks again, Rick for all of your hard work!
Regarding the email of the week: To our lurking friend, Ms. Pennsylvania Lawyer... I hope that you will soon be able to join us by posting on the boards. It will be really nice to meet you! Thanks for hanging out. Oh... and BTW... I love your answer as to why you watch LOTM so many times! "Because it keeps ending!" I fully intend to adopt and use that reason myself! Thanks! |

Rich, the pages here load much more quickly now that you've removed the orphaned Week in History banner. I suppose the poor thing was spending the time looking vainly for it's mommy.
Now, if I could only do something about those duelling banjo's. At least they don't bring the browswer to a standstill like they did on my old machine. |

Hi, Rich,
Thanks for remembering...
quote: Reminds me of Rattlesnake Woman a couple of years ago, or so, who helped create another Gathering ... without even trying!
It's hard to believe that it's been almost two years since I sent you that email on Halloween night! Whatever small part I might have played in your decision to proceed with Gathering 2002, I am grateful that I was able to be there for that unforgettable event. The experience is one that I will always treasure and will never forget. It offered me the opportunity to see some beautiful places and to take part in a wonderful adven'cha unlike anything I had ever experienced before. I also enjoyed meeting many great folks from the Board "face to face" and getting to know them better - including YOU!
It's good to see that there are other newcomers to the site who are appreciative of all it has to offer, and who possess that fresh enthusiasm that is so contagious!
Keep up the good work, Rich (and Lainey too, of course!) and never, ever doubt for one single minute how very special this site is, and what it means to so many people, and how much YOU mean to all of us, as well!
Warmest regards, |

I'm one of those who pops in and out of Mohicanland, reading much more than I post. But I want you to know, Rich, that many times I've looked at this site in awe of the love and dedication that you've had in creating and sustaining it. And in spite of the frustration you've had, you continue on.
A reporter friend of mine once told me that newspapers pay attention to letters to the editor, because for every one letter they get, there are at least 10 other people out there who feel the same, but don't write. And so it is with this.
So, when I say "thank you" for this wonderful website, please know that there are definitely many others who feel the same but don't say so (like me, until now!). And be sure of this---you have touched more lives and hearts than you will ever know. |

Rich I can totally relate to what you are saying! It IS an addiction! And often a thankless job!! Been there, DOING that myself!!! You are doing an awesome job! You have poured your heart and soul into this website and although we may not express our appreciation as loudly or as often as we should, that does not diminish what you have accomplished here. Not everyone has the mettle you do! Kudos! |

Wow Rich I feel so aweful. I haven't used the site in quite a few months but it is not because there is anything wrong with it, I have just had a lot of personal issues going on that has consumed my time. I love your website. You want to know what people think about the site...well let me tell you my opinion.
This site for me is like an escape from reality. Almost like a stepping stone to the past. I find it exciting and fascinating to learn all kinds of new things about the actors, the making of the movie, ect. Before I found this site I just liked the movie because it was an awesome film.....after spending time on this website it has made me look more carefully at the details of the movie and basically have a whole new respect for the movie. Micheal Mann may deserve an award for directing the movie but you and your family deserve an award for all the hard work and passion you have poured into this website and the gatherings. You have reached out and touched so many fans and brought us together on common ground. You gave us a safehaven where we are not looked down on for having such a keen interest in a movie that was created so long ago. I can hardly find the words to express my gratitude to you for creating such a warm and welcoming website for us. I feel like everyone here is family and that is only one of the unique qualities of your website. You are a brilliant man who deserves to be acknowledged for all of your hard work. I look forward to continuing my browsing on this site. Keep up the good.....no great work!!! You will forever be admired by at least one mohicanlander!!! Thank you for everything! |

WARNING: This poster is still practicing and she still doesn't have ieSpell. Read at your own risk.
Rich: quote: Sometimes, I wonder what the Mohican Board means to other people.
Rich...you can't imagine the impact this board has made in my life! It would take literally hours to explain even if I had the words...they'll come to me...
Rich: quote: For me, it is a compelling addiction ... albeit a lot of fun, a good pastime, and a creative outlet, of some kind. Educational, too!
Addiction? Definitely. I simply cannot become fully consious in the morning until I turn my puter speakers up full blast and log onto the board. Ahhh....better than java, French vanilla, even. Fun...almost as much fun as watching Doc Mary spread gnome butter on a huron. A good pastime... yeah,wholesome.. well, as long as you stay out of Bumppo's. Creative... inspirational on this end. The creativity in this place has inspired my 'creative' interests in trekking and gnome carving just to name a couple of things. Educational? Yessireebob! I leaned about the Pumpkin Fairy right here in MohicanLand! I had no idea... (You can see that I've been nosin' around in the archives)
Rich: quote: It does get depressing at times ... the fights, the petty complaints, people disappearing ... all that kind of stuff that I have little control over.
Bless your heart. In all my explorations recently of the new board, I have yet to run across an 'argument' thread. Nothing at all depressing about my discoveries! Rich, you're a longhunter??!! Woooohoooo! I enjoyed reading that thread. You asked all the same questions I did when starting out. You were just as confused and overwhelmed as I was (And still am!) I appreciate your weekly updates and the recent links to the Tattoo page. You make it all so easy. What a cool, cool set of articles! I'm getting off track, I know. Cross my heart and hope to die, I'll never disappear again.
Rich: quote: I felt obligated to be here, but couldn't arrive! I wonder, sometimes, if anyone else feels that, ever.
I appreciate your sense of responsibility to this site, but especially to us. I said it once, and I'll say it again, bless your heart! Thank you, thank you, thank you! |
