Hey Dillon- My set-up is pretty simple but it does the trick. Unfortunately simple doesn't entail cheapness. At any rate I shoot with a Hi8 sony handycam. Hi8 is an obsolete format so you can usually find the gear fairly priced, possibly $200-$400 for a camera. Then you need a good battery-$75-$100. Tapes are cheap- 3 blank 2 hour tapes for about $10. I import the footage into my computer- an Apple I-mac with superdrive and firewire ports, extra ram(756M), and a 60 gig hard drive($3000). With a DV camera you can simply plug it into a firewire port and import footage. With my Hi8 rig (analog) you need to connect it to a DV bridge - I use a Dazzle* Hollywood DV bridge, about $300- the DV bridge converts your analog signal into a digital format that can be interpreted by your DV editing software. The DV bridge is connected to the I-mac via the firewire port. Now all you need is editing software. There are a lot of cheaper options, Mac OSX comes with a good one called I-movie, however I would strongly recommend getting your hands on Final Cut Pro or Adobe Premiere- both are film industry standards. After I finish editing and mixing any additional audio I convert my file into the appropriate format- either DV for a DVD or ToastVCD for a Video CD. At that point just burn away. Hope that was even a little bit helpful.
