A regular see-saw we've got going here!

UP : The Gathering continues to progress smashingly! We have now passed the point where we can allow folks to sign-up to see the movie on the big screen. Including guests, the place is packed. It's now waiting-list only! This does figure to be the biggest Gathering ever, or at least rivaling the 2001 event. Two things still up in the air are a musical performer, if any, at our Spirits on the River dinner - which won't be resolved this week, as Lady Ann is on vacation - and whether & when we'll be able to have a mini-Grand Encampment set up in our midst at the Geneva. Speaking of that place, they have reserved the entire lodge for us and the rooms, believe it or not, are already filling up. Go to our 2004 Gathering Page now & check out the updated room layout which shows which rooms are already taken, then click on the photo of the Geneva & make your reservation [telling them, of course, that you are with the Mohican Gathering!]. Be sure to let Gadget Girl know of your choice!

DOWN : Seems I missed my big chance to hang out with the Colonel ... Munro, that is. Maurice Roeves. Our phone is disconnected - it ain't easy making ends meet around here - so I'm sure he thinks I stood him up. Belatedly, I e-mailed him our Mohican Press number, but that line is virtually always tied up with the Internet, so chances of getting through are slim to none. Damn! Damn! For those who never read our interview with the chap, go to: Interview With Col. Munro. To say I am disappointed, is, well ...

UP : My special gift of a rifle is still progressing nicely. I got a detailed Weekly Update from the maker, Bill, and, if I may, I will quote it here:
quote:
Well, forearm is roughly shaped not down to final smooth level, but enough that all ramrod thimbles are now on. Ramrod is made and fitted. Trigger guard is fitted and inlet. Butt plate is custom altered to be similar to Kettenburg's interpretation of existing Johannes Faber buttplate example. Buttplate is also fitted and on.
Have ordered ... custom made nitric acid stain (in quantity) and also the Venetian turpentine with Colophony resin ... to use with boiled linseed oil he says he used to stain and finish his example of the Faber rifle. We'll see what coloration it turns out to be when done.

This weekend will be working on the patchbox cavity and lid.
Then final filing, scraping and smoothing preparatory to doing the carving. Likely will be going that next week and getting everything ready to stain and finish the following week ...

Really, how am I ever going to thank you guys properly for this?!?

DOWN : July 24, 2001 - TWO friggin' years ago. Very disillusioning, disappointing, dissomething that resolution cannot be found. It was a bad scene, but it wasn't that bad. If there were real friendships there before - and I know that to be true - than by now I would think that all could truly be forgiven by everyone. Thankfully, that is true in most cases ... No, not beating myself up over this, but not letting it go, either. Probably never will.

UP : Watched Gods & Generals last night. For sure, Ted Turner looks better being shot climbing over a fence [Gettysburg] than he does singing "Bonnie Blue Flag." [Or whatever that tune is called!] That much is for sure. I liked it very much. Excellent character development in this one, something that was missing in Gettysburg. Robert Duvall made a wonderful Lee - only wish there was more of him! A new found respect for Stephan Lang. Great actor! His portrayal of Jackson was, I thought, rig

WELL, Rich, this has been ahwile....but Thanks for the time spent writing the Weekly update; something I've set my weekly clock to for years! Even if I don't make it on the boards as much. Am very glad Sophia is well...and I never doubted the Gathering would also do as well. Last year was way to much baggage to handle on my end; maybe on a lot of others. Thanks for the reminder on Chink.....check's in the mail...ever see "Wind River"...??

Down-er: That's too bad about missing Col. Munro. Rich, I'm sure he will understand when you have the chance to explain it to him. I'm disappointed for you...

Up-per: I'm glad you liked G & G. I watched it this weekend, too, and enjoyed it just as much on the small screen.

Up-per: Wow. The rifle-making process is really complicated, as I assumed it would be. I really admire these craftsmen... Bill and Seamus and others... who take the time and care to make these items as authentic (and beautiful) as possible. Huzzahs, gentlemen!

Major up-per: Just when I was thinking about asking after Sophia... you must have read my mind. Now, how about another photo when you have a spare (hah!) minute?

I was in the beautiful north Ga mountains last week for a much required vacation, and if my attempts at an unofficial-ungathering with Rich & Lainey were anything to go by, someone would have shot the courier heading your way too Theresa!!

Maybe next time?!
