All is not well in our little community here we call Mohicanland! RATS!
Yes, we've got issues ... or, one, at least. It seems there is a dastardly little bug - or something - that messed up during our recent transfer/conversion from Access to SQL database formats. I knew it was too good to be true. The problem has me whooped, so I needed to call in the heavy artillery [READ: those who really know what they're doing!]
Here's the problem, in case you didn't yet notice: If you enter this forum, that is The Weekly Update, you will notice that all the topics have zero replies, with one exception. Last week's post has 200-300 - 11 pages worth! ALL non-archived replies within The Weekly Update forum, have joined forces in that one topic. Cause? Well, I think it happened when I did a routine archiving of the Thought For The Day forum early this AM. At least right after that is when I noticed it.
Anyway, as I said, I called in the reinforcements, and hopefully will have that "issue" resolved in the near future. If you, during your browsing, notice any other related-oddities in the other forums, please let us know ...
OK, on with the Weekly Update ...
The maker of my longrifle, Mr. Billy Boy R., has been keeping me informed of its progress, and it's coming along quite nicely! Here's a couple of images of the work as it may look when finished:

It's a Johannes Faber early Virginia rifle. I should note that this isn't the actual rifle, but is the one Bill is basing his work on. Mine will look very similar. It is a real beauty, and I am absolutely thrilled with the notion that, thanks to you all, I'll soon have that gun in my hands! This is almost too much to comprehend!

Workers unearth 2 soldiers' remains
The pair died in the Battle of Lake George

Workers digging a foundation behind the Holly Tree Inn
unearthed the 250-year-old remains of two soldiers
this month, and a historian says 100 more still lie in
unmarked graves in the area.
Skeletal remains that archaeologists believe are those
of young men who died in the Battle of Lake George
were uncovered when the owners of the Holly Tree, at
Route 9 and Birch Street, started preparing the ground
for cottages.
Gerry Bradfield, curator at the privately owned Fort
William Henry, said he has an eyewitness account of a
mass burial of 126 men on this site in the shadow of
Prospect Mountain. French and British forces clashed
here during the French and Indian War. They were
fighting for control of the lake, part of a strategic
waterway from Canada to Albany.
Warren County Sheriff Larry Cleveland said the
contractor called his office when the bones were
found, but deputies quickly determined the site was
not a crime scene.
"Finding grave sites is really not that unusual
around here," Cleveland said.
David Klinge of Hartgen Archaeological Associates of
Rensselaer said a physical anthropologist reviewed the
remains and examined the site for signs of European
burial practices.
Bradfield has pictures from 1965, when two dozen of
the fallen soldiers' brothers-in-arms were uncovered
when the motel was built. The men likely were killed
during one of the three clashes between French,
British and Indian forces on Sept. 8, 1755, the
curator said.

"Issue" Update: In fact, this was not caused by my archiving at all; just so happened that that's when I noticed it. Actually, it has been like that since I edited the Weekly Update's forum properties 2 days ago. So, why? Because something did not go right with the conversion. Turns out, this is a known behavior with conversions gone awry!
Tediously, I've been restoring, by comparing reply ids to their topic ids on my backup of the old Access database, then fixing on the SQL. You will notice, slowly, things coming back to normal. It's quite a lot of fun! I found someone who thinks they can write a script to compare & fix in one quick motion ... we'll see.
After all is fixed, I then need to get my web host to reconvert, or whatever it is going to take.

Well, the great virus attack of 2003 continues. I got your email Rich. I think a LOT of the stuff comes to us because we have websites. Betty and I are on the same computer, partitioned with two sides one for her one for me. I am getting a TON of this crap in my email box because I have my email forwarded from my website to my personal email rather than go up on the server and read it. Betty is getting NONE of this crap. And these last days, 90% of the spam I WAS getting now has a virus attached to the message. The return addresses in many, many instances are website return addresses including customer service, webmaster, etc etc. Whatever this thing is, it seems to troll the internet and look for website addys and use those. I have a virus scanner running all the time. Hopefully nothing with my personal email addy has come to anybody with a virus attached, but I received at least ONE email during the last week with a virus attached with return address of webmaster@palongrifles.com (my son's forwarding addy). This is a royal pain in the butt, and to paranoid ME, looks like something more than some damn kid playing around.
What really ticks me off is that I have rules set up for my email, which captures various key words, forwarded messages, whether there is an attachment, etc and either stated to delete the mail from the server, or not download it from the server. That worked for about half a day. Then they all started coming through again regardless of the rules set to trap them from downloading. I think the damn ISP's are so overloaded they are just letting this crap through to their customers rather than try to keep up. In other words, instead of running logic and/or virus scanners on THEIR servers, they are leaving it up to us, the individual customers. Nice of them, eh.
I have gotten some infected messages from people I don't know, but are obviously personal addys. The bulk of the infected mail, though, seems to be coming from website addys and marketing addys.
I find that interesting. It's what makes me paranoid enough to start to believe this is a terrorist attack as a trial balloon. Sure, the virus is not harmful apparently, but replicates itself and is a real pain in the butt. But it seems to be attacking marketing and website addys more than personal addys. Once they see how effective it is, and tune it up, they can then target our marketing and businesses for a truly harmful virus.
At any rate, it sure does make a good case for having a law passed STOPPING THE DAMN SPAMMING that a lot of stinking marketers and sleaze sites have been able to get away with.

I think your hypothesis is pretty much right on, Bill. I did get one or two with your web site's domain name, many bounced back to me with mine, and several other familiar names, including the guy I got my tomahawk from & a couple of personal addys of Mohicanlanders. It doesn't matter, really, though for this thing just harvests e-mails and then assumes identity, basically.
What a mess. I am currently about 1850 E-mails behind ... in the download process!!! After awhile, my ISP just stops responding & if I'm away from the computer, precious hours are wasted while the E-mail keeps piling up.
I just asked my web site host to delete ALL the E-mail from my server. It's the only way I can hope to catch up. I do so relunctantly, because there may be orders, Gathering sign-ups, or other stuff I really want, but I give up!
I suspect a few folks out there are down & out, as well.
A ROYAL pain in the arse this is! And a waste of a person's time ... |

Boy! You guys really have my sympathy. I don't have a business or personal website and don't need to worry about this issue from that standpoint. So far, I've not received a single infected e-mail to my personal addy. I've made a point of downloading all of Microsoft's patches and have kept my virus definition files up to date (I check for both about every three days just to be sure I don't miss anything). So far I've very lucky. I really hope things start to improve for you. I can only imagine the stress it's causing.

Well, hopefully we are over the hump on this thing. Last night the infected emails began to dwindle, and today nothing. And, my traps are working again and I am getting 1/20 of the usual spam messages that were getting through up to last night. What a nightmare. I can only imagine what the ISP's were going through. We had a very minor attack at the Library System when I was there as a techie, basically porn sites grabbing our ID and server and sending out spam to the world. That took us two days to put a stop to completely. And that was nothing compared to this issue. But, so far, so good and no infected emails have been ID'd by the virus scanner. Yesterday it was horrendous.

So far I've gotten two infected emails and accidentally opened the first.I deleted the second one which arrived today.I've ran the symantec system after my computer restarted without my command.Rich,anyone,tips would be appreciated.

If you get and run a virus scanner such as Norton.....run it continuously in the background, it will catch and delete any virus attachements before you can even open them inadvertantly. Every email I received that was infected Norton deleted the offending attachment automatically. And I received hundreds over the last week.
There is no predicting what address will carry a virus really, as like Rich said it just trolls randomly and uses other folk's addresses from websites or email address books. You should be suspicious of ANY attachment even those coming from folks you do know, but if you have your virus scanner running all the time, even attachments from "friends" (I put it in parens not saying your friends aren't really your friends, but meaning that the evil virus is adopting their identity) the scanner will delete infected email. |

| Hey, Bill. Had to respond to your post since I, too, have been inundated by scads of crazy email messages. I was especially surprised to see you mention webmaster@palongrifles.com since I've had many of these show up in my email. Now, I'm not nearly as computer saavy as you and Rich (and my son tried to explain what was happening, but...duh? I still don't get it). I'll go back now and see if me wittle bwain can figure out your explanation!!! By the way, beautiful job you did on Rich's new piece of "furniture"! Take care, Jayne |

| Yes, I'm getting them now too...both on my personal yahoo account and on my work network account. Fortunately, yahoo sends them to the bulk mail folder and I don't even open those messages, let alone the attachments. I just delete them. With my work account I have to be a little more careful. Knowing that the attached infected files nearly always have a .pif or a .scr extension helps one to identify them. Still, even 10 per day is nothing compared to what Rich and Bill have been getting! Zowie! |

Well, here at least, it is as bad as ever ... I just can't keep up. Just tried a server-side filter, so we'll see if that helps.
Meanwhile, all I can say is that if you don't hear from me, try it again! I may get to the point where I have to empty the server again, in which case I will be deleting ALL E-mail ... again! 
My entire Internet time is spent filtering & deleting and it's been going on now for almost 2 weeks ... My last resort will be to temporarily shut down E-mail all together. This sucks, completely! |

| It may have something to do with the popularity of your website and it's many, many links in browsers online. And your many more members (I don't even HAVE membership on my website) with address books of their own, and the "hooks" from internet into your website because of all the info you have available. Maybe? Small comfort I know when you are dealing with what you are dealing with, but it may be coming from the very fact that your site IS so popular and perused. |

Yeah, that's the way it was for me too. A relief to be sure, but kinda scary the way it was so bad, then all of a sudden, nothing!
Hopefully that was a result of the ISP's getting a handle on it, and NOT because it WAS a trial balloon with a designed in lifetime. THAT would REALLY be scary! (says a paranoid me). |

So far I've only gotten two....but so far nothing bad has happened.My computer only restarted that one time....probably because the computer froze.I don't know....this virus is just confusing.Here in Duval County...Florida....all of the computers in the Duval County schools were infected by this virus so the computer technicians or whatever are trying to firewall this.
we'll have to "wade" this one out and hope it ends soon.I wish luck to everyone...I personally hate this virus.

Gee, the virus our machine got would just shut the internet down so we couldn't stay on for more than 90 seconds at which time the computer just shut itself down. After that happened for a bit, we just stayed off the computer until my hubby got a patch fix-it from work which cleared up the problem completely. It was that "masterblaster" (?) virus and it started after I opened up a web site; don't remember opening up any email.. but then I get very little email....I understand there was some arrest made up in Oregon? or somesuch? If I am talking of the same virus you've all had which sounds horrific! My sympathies and I hope it is over with!

I've been working on a short film of mine using Windows Movie maker and it only gives me a limited amount of time before it restarts.I think the virus is in there and if it is I'll be so pissed off....excuse me.I've ran the symantec anti virus but that doesn't seem to work. "lol"

Two different animals, Jo ... The MSBlaster thing I luckily don't have to worry about, as I'm still running Windows 98. Apparently, that virus attacks vulnerabilities in later Windows versions. That's the one - actually a variant of - that the teen was recently arrested for!
The other, the one Bill & I were violently attacked by, is Sobig.F - that is a flood of infected E-mails.
I have every defense I can think of - and afford - installed on my computer ... anti-spam, anti-virus, firewall, MS patches & updates ... still it came! Oh well ... it's over ... for now! |

Thanks for the explaining the differences. I've read/heard a lot about the MSBlaster thingy but not about the Sobig.F; but didn't think I had the same virus you and Bill had - thank heavens. What a headache (to say the least and a royal pain at the other end of the body).
We do have the new Windows thingy now; would rather have stayed with the 98 version but our internet connection didn't like it and since there's only one internet provider in our area...(so much for competition for better service!).
And yes, Dillion, I'm here north of San Francisco, holding down the Western Frontier; and just as crazy as everyone else here, I guess.

I thought you had melted by this time from your heat over there!!! I guess it's a little cooler these days?
I don't know exactly why it's a MBlaster or Masterblaster or I'm sure it has another name also; but it's not as worrisome as the one Rich and Bill and others as yourself have. IT reminds me of a name of a video game my sons undoubtly own; don't recollect any Wonder songs - but it sounds resonable.
Stay away from that warm Genevera.
Dillion; I am impressed. At 14 I was out and about and knew nothing of the French and Indian War; and the Alamo was a bad John Wayne movie. Good on you.
