Hey guys ...
... A little short on caffeine this morning ... might stumble one or two times trying to write this!
Here goes, anyhow ...
Failed to Mention This Before Department: Actually, this took place about 2 weeks ago ... I readjusted the time frame which allows you to edit one of your posts. It now stands at 24 hours [up from just one hour]. The main "abuser" of this feature appears to be gone, so maybe sometime we can revert it back to the way it was. Meanwhile, 24 hours OR contact me or the moderator of the forum.
Continuing Thanks! Forgive any repetition here, but I simply feel like there was more I should have said ... don't know what, exactly ... but something. I am still absolutely floored by this complete surprise of a gift that I'm not sure I am worthy to have received. It remains very embarrassing to me - not that I'm not loving it, 'cause I am ... completely. I've always had the desire to do some reenacting, just never could afford to get started in what can be a very expensive hobby. This outfit so many of you contributed to is not only a great start toward that, but is so tied in to the theme of this web site ... I mean, I still don't know what to say. All I know is that I'll forever be appreciative; will enjoy it immensely; and will furnish the much-clamored-for picture sometime down the road! [The "moon" thing might require some Ping on the trail up to The Chimneys!!! ]
Forgot to add this picture in earlier - for old times sake!
The entire outfit is wonderful, and thrilling to me ... but the rifle ... THAT is the crown jewel. I have wanted a muzzleloader since I first became interested in frontier history, and that was a very long time ago! More than likely, if this hadn't occurred, I never would have had one ... or any of the other stuff, for that matter. I guess that's one of the things that makes this so special to me. It was previously unattainable. Anyway, now that the cat's out of the bag, Bill R. asked me for input. I really don't care!!!! I told him I loved the one he made for Bill MacLeod that I admired at the 2002 Gathering - a Schreit rifle - so I think we're going with that, basically, only with a more Southern flavor, which, according to Bill, entails a different-style carving as well as a more rounded, English-style lock.
Again, I really cannot thank you all enough. I am humbled that you think so highly of me that you would go to all the expense & bother. I really am. Thanks to all of you for contributing to buy me that gun - and for Bill R. for crafting it for me. Somewhere in the archives is, I am sure, a post I made after seeing one of his Killdeer replicas up close, back when we were selling them, where I said I'd be proud to own one of his guns. Well, I am! I really am! And, a wee bit of extra thanks goes to Stan Golden for making the powder horn, Terry Golden - who I thought might never speak to me again after riding the Nolichucky in a Duck last year - who fingerwove the sash & garters, Bill MacLeod for the hunting bag, moccasins, and shooting accessories, and, of course, Ann Colby for the shirt and stuff and for being, I know, the catalyst behind this!
Thanks, forever!
I think I'll try it all on later ...
Gathering Keeps Rolling: The 2004 GRAND Great Mohican Gathering is just ... well, I don't know if I'm just energized after not doing it this year, and having a relatively small one last, or what ... but I am psyched and ready for a big one! It's got all the makings, so I hope that you are doing your best to attend. This year's mini un-Gathering was convincing to me - not that I needed it - just how fine a time can be had at these things - due larg

Are you kidding me?! Col. Munro is in the area and we missed him by only days and days? You do what ever is necessary to make this work for you. OH! And please (as I know you will) keep us updated on the gun! Can't wait to see it! I told Claude last night that it sounds like you are having the time of your life with all this longhunter stuff. Good! |

Rich, Well now I sm SURE you will need some assistance on this trek with Col. Munro! What if you forget the directions or something? You NEED a seasoned Gatherer to accompany you. Someone local <ahem>! Someone familiar with the lay of the land who can get folks there quick <ahem>! Someone who thought enough of the Gray Hair to put him (and his quote)on the front of last year's Gathering program Seriously, what an honor to have him contact you in such a manner, this is so exciting! There MUST be a way to work this out with your work schedule. I am sure it will all fall into place. Keep us posted! You have worked long and hard on the book, the website, and the Gatherings, and now it seems you are reaping some rewards for all your dedication. Stephanie |

Rich, When I was contacted by Ann, I was quite happy to do the project. Ann had told me before her inspirational project how you had admired Bill's rifle. We thought to make you something similar to his, but maybe with a more early Virginia/NC flavor in keeping with your current location. That would also enable you to participate in both F&I War and Rev War reenactments both in the north and south. At any rate, to me, it seemed appropriate to be the crafter of the rifle, and I was pleased and honored that Ann thought of me. Appropriate because making the rifle for you would bring you and I full circle through the Mohicanland saga - from initial crazy contact through times of ups and downs - happiness and sadness - back round the circle back to the point where we first began. Seemed fitting somehow that we both started with a love of history, the colonial era, and flintlocks but had only the LOTM movie to show for it. Now, after that beginning, I am making rifles and you have your complete outfit AND rifle.
Well, as usual, I meander. Bottom line is, I am very happy to do it for you, and I think Ann and the rest of the folks had an absolutely great idea and tribute to the man (and woman) who started us all on this path as a group - make the Man a Longhunter in his own right! They are good folks, aren't they - those friends of yours who conspired to do this project for you. God bless Ann and the rest of 'em.
One of these days, you have GOT to outfit yourself and have a pic taken of you and Soldier #1 together in period dress. That would surely be a pic of the circle round which you have gone!

Well, well, well! A letter from DD-L... hob-nobbing with Uncas and Magua... TV interviews (probably newspapers too, right?)... and now... treking through the wilderness with Col. Munro! I am impressed!! Another feather for your soon-to-be longhunter's hat!
Seriously, this is just too neat for words! Call in sick, if you have to, but do it!! |

Argh, Rich! You just enjoy the torture, don't you?
Seriously though, how wonderful that you'll be hobnobbing it with Col. Monroe... |
