Within the next few days, a series of polls will appear here concerning the next Great Mohican Gathering in 2003. Your honest & forthright opinions will go a long way towards determining which direction & shape the event will take.

Ideas are already formulating!

Please participate in the polls! However, do so ONLY if you feel you really might be in attendance. They will, of course, force you to make "unpleasant" decisions! It is often difficult to "choose," but choose we must. Can't do it ALL in 4 [now 5! - RF] days! You can, though, add replies to elaborate or comment on the polls or anything else related.

We'll run 'em for a month, or so, then ... we'll start booking. Doing it early, we hope, will enable you folks to make concrete plans [we hate those last minute cancellations!] and increase the chances of getting the guests we want to, in fact, be here!

Look for the Gathering Polls ... at a Mohican Board near you!

Polls are re-opened [most, anyway], as we attempt to muster as much input as possible! Please participate!

WHAT!!?? Wasn't it only two weeks ago today that we were all congregating at Chimney Rock to begin the Fifth Annual Great Mohican Gathering? And, already we're making plans for the Sixth!!?? Well, count me in as a WOOOOHOOO, TOO! I've placed my votes on the polls, Rich, and you're right some decisions are hard to make. But ya know what? It matters not what the results are, Claude and I will be there! Thanks, pal.

WoooHooo #3 signing in! WOW! Who needs Fourth of July fireworks, when there's the anticipation of a Sixth Annual Great Mohican Gathering in the works?! Rich, I've already voted in the polls for the dates and the locations - trying to pick JUST ONE "favorite" location was just agony, by the way! I love them all!

I will definitely be at the Gathering and, like Marc, I'll be marking off the days on the calendar 'til then!

See you all in June!

I am DEFINITELY in for next year! Just please don't plan early morning activities! You can't fully enjoy the things at night, and get up early the next morning. At least I can't. And I don't want to miss anything, something I had to do this year. Of course, I have almost a year to get in shape, and I will need every bit of it.

LOL... that depends on how much money we get after passing the hat! If we can get Clabair to come next year, we could probably get us a enough to cover Gathering expenses. BTW, any amount collected will have to be evenly split amongst all "mooners"... regardless of how long or short your... ummmm... breech clout is. hehehehe...

While we're on the subject of next year's Gathering, I was just curious: is anybody out there besides me doing anything now to help them be better prepared physically for next year's Gathering? I thought it would be fun for folks to share exercise tips and suggestions for others to use! Seriously! I only made it to three days out of four this year and my goal for Gathering #6 is to be in much better shape, so that I don't miss one single event!

Prior to this year's Gathering, my husband told me that I needed to "get in shape." I told him "I AM in shape. 'Round' is a shape!" As I discovered at the Gathering, "round" is NOT the best shape to be in if you want to do EVERYTHING! I have already begun my shape-up program: I've dropped a few pounds since the Gathering & my husband & I are exercising about 6 nights out of the week now. We alternate with bike riding one night, then an hour to an hour and a half of tennis the next night. If I survive, I should be in much better shape by the time June rolls around again!

Hey Diane,

Prior to the Gathering last year I began to do some exercise to get into some kind of shape for it because Rich kept warning us of how strenuous it would be. I did ok but I realized I wasn't in near the shape I should have been. So immediately after the Gathering I began a little more aggresive regime. I increased the amount of time and the resistance of the exercise. I've found that the stairmaster, treadmill, and the elyptical/precor machines at the gym are most helpful along with a little weight work for strengthening.

Probably anything you can do cardiovascular for stamina and muscular for strength will help. Also, Diana was sweet to lend me one of her walking sticks while at Table Rock and this was most helpful Thank you, Diana. It put less strain on the legs by making my arms work, too.

Hope this helps.

Theresa, Diane, and all,
I, too, took deliberate steps to make sure I was in better shape than my first Gathering. Particularly this spring, I have made an effort when walking to tackle hills and try to keep going. However, little did I know that I should have been exercising on a rowing machine the whole time as well. It wasn't any of the hiking that killed me, it was the DUCK! So, if the Hellichucky is on the itinerary for next year, I'm asking for a rowing machine for Christmas!

Sort of jumping over here from the "Nolichucky VS Dupont" Poll/thread ...

It seems every year this gets suggested, at least once, and this year is no exception ... Sunshine brought up the dual itinerary scenario. I'm sure there are others thinking the same. I know you mean well [really, I do!] - and in fact you even offered to help! [:) - so please don't take my response here as a slam toward you, for surely it isn't ... I seem to say this every year ... and I know you meant well!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My feeling on that is is this: ! This is a Gathering ... meaning "people coming together". Doing that, in my estimation, splits them apart. Not to mention that a lot of work & money goes into this, and that just complicates the matter even more. This ain't no picnic, and we're not a travel agency ... We put together a program and that's it ... along the way we solicite & listen to lots of input, but ultimately, decisions need to be made and then the chips can fall where they may. Believe me, if we opted for an alternative activity for a day, someone, sometime would suggest a third! It just seems to work that way. I prefer the group to do this as a group. That, for me, is kind of a large part of what this is all about.

All that said, there's nothing to prevent anyone from not doing all 5 days worth of stuff and just do their own thing for a day or two. It's been done before, and I'm sure it'll be done again. I just don't want to build that into the planning.

Hope you understand that.

As for Nolichucky & Dupont ... it's a very tough decision - one I'm not eager to make. In fact, I am toying with the idea of doing both ... Lady Ann, one of the key organizers, even going so far as to suggest we do CRP AND Dupont in the same day! THAT would be a KILLER! [I did check with Dupont to see if there was some kind of curfew, though - there isn't! ] We'll see what we can come up with ... The idea here is to have a 5-day scenario that goes like this: Killer - Easy - Killer - Easy - Killer! The "Easys" are Cherokee & the Mohican Games/BBQ/Music Extravaganza. The "Killers" - Ha Ha!!! Who knows, yet?! Not even the Shadow!

We will be updating the Gathering Page as soon as we decide! One bit of Gathering 2003 News is that a volunteer has come forward to do the Raffles, so it looks like that will come to pass. The volunteer has a very good idea, as well. Again, this'll be on the Gathering Page soon ...

Also, still leaning toward Sunday as the date of the movie. Not sure. I figure folks can still mosey on over to the Geneva after that and it won't be all that much later than had we done the raffles there.

So, a lot of things in the air - even Biltmore is still in the picture - just waiting for it all to settle to Earth!

Well said, Rich...the part about being "TOGETHER". I remember the first year we came and we didn't take the recommended route at CRP, we missed out on some very important movie related info. So, something as small as being separated at CRP was a mistake for us. As far as itinerary goes, we're there no matter how long it takes, to matter how far.

Rich, I actually had the same idea as Lady Ann! Although the round trip at CRP is a challenge , I don't consider Dupont State Forest a strenuous segment of the activities, unless of course you plop in a seven mile hike in between just for fun (I find Table Rock and CR the most tasking, oxygen tank worthy in fact ). I mean, DANG...if one can be expected to run a FOOT RACE for cryin' out loud on a CR day, then what's a little stroll to some falls???? I had such a blast doing the Nolichucky last year and will just be tickled if it can be included again this year!!!!
