Good morning friends & neighbors & assorted frontier riff-raff!

A few "themes" that I'd like to talk about this morning that have been on my mind for a spell, but that I perhaps have not adequately addressed. But first:

A new addition to the Mohican Board. [Those of you on the Newsletter Subscription list received this already. Sorry!] Up till now, if you wanted to attach an image to your post, it had to be up on the Internet somewhere before you posted - either in a Photo Album, on the Mohican Board, or elsewhere. Now, you can upload a .gif or .jpg image - right from your PC - to our server and have it show up in your post!

How? Simple:

When you are logged in and posting a message, look just below the text input area of the posting screen. You will see an icon that looks like this: - Click on it when you are ready to insert an image. When you do, a pop-up window will appear asking you to locate the image on your PC. Once you do that, it will upload to our server. Depending on image size, it shouldn't take more than a few seconds. Done!

Please don't abuse this feature, as it does take up valuable server space! With that in mind, we've added a little utility to our Downloads section that you can download for free. It's called Win-JPEG and is very simple to use. Besides being a simple image editor, it has the capability to compress the file size dramatically without noticeable ill effect in quality. Most of the .jpgs you see on our site have been compressed with Win-JPEG.

So, if you don't already have the means to compress your image files, by all means download this great little tool. [It is shareware & a free download elsewhere on the Internet, as well.] Then, before uploading images, please resize them - you don't want huge pictures uploaded that stretch the screen to unwieldy proportions! [a maximum width of say 500 pixels works well - you can do this with Win-JPEG] - and then re-save the image using Win-JPEG to compress it. You'll see the file size decrease dramatically!

Yes, I've already considered the possible dangers/abuse. Hopefully, it won't come down to that!

Ok.

About The Lions Den: The whole thing about the Mohican Board is that it's been here a long time; since 1997 to be exact. One can't reasonably expect folks to hang around here for years & years and talk about nothing but The Last of the Mohicans even with the broadened scope we instituted several years ago. New folks will always come along eager to discuss that topic, and hopefully older folks will jump in to make them welcome, but, on a continuing daily basis long-timers need more. Easy to understand, I think, and that's why, when we opened this new version of the Board, just about a year ago, we opted to create forums within the Forum that have nothing to do with The Last of the Mohicans. The Lions Den is one of those forums. Believe me, I have heard both extremes on this controversial forum; from leaving it as an "anything goes" forum to banning it altogether. It's staying as it lays because some people enjoy a forum of that nature. My only advice is to read & utilize that forum if you like it, and to not if you don't. A matter of personal taste & discipline. Political & social issues are a part of life, will always be discussed, and deserve a place here where folks can post their thoughts on pretty much anything without "fear" of being cast aside as "deviants", etc.

That said, if you want to discuss politics & religion, the pot is bound to be stirred - intentionally or not. Buttons get pushed - and we all have our buttons - and then the proverbial shit hits the fan, or can.

About Friends: ... and that leads me to this ... We all came here because of some sort of attraction or interest

Personally, I rarely venture into the Lion's Den. I have enough controversy in my work that I don't need to go looking for more. However, I know there are people who thrive on discussing controversial topics.
My daughter and her best friend are at opposite ends of the spectrum in many areas. They approach each other's thoughts with a "Hmmm. That's an interesting perspective. Let me think about it." Sometimes they come closer to agreeing, and sometimes they agree to disagree, but they never try to convince the other that her perspective is wrong. I've learned a lot from my daughter. For those of you who have been upset by the interaction in the Lion's Den, you might think about trying their approach. As a last resort, you might try avoiding it altogether. It might be healthier for your stress level and your blood pressure.

Excellent post Rich! I am glad that you brought this subject up. I used to frequent the Lions Den, but have been avoiding it over the last couple of months. Like Chris, I have enough controversy in my work and everyday life and come to Mohican Land to 'get away', and have great conversation with the wonderful people here. I have no wish to get into a debate with anyone, unless posters "agree to disagree" as Chris says (wonderful expression by the way!) Besides, there are many other great forums to choose from on this site!

Hi Chris,

As a moderator of this forum I can tell you there is nothing going on there. Hardly any posts and no new topics for many weeks now. I really don't understand this part of the update at all.

As for me I value the Den because I am fascinated in views opposite to mine, or simply views (more or less) different to mine. Not to fight but to understand where people come from. Same reason I travel so much, see and learn. Most of the times you maintain your thoughts, but, sometimes you think " maybe there's more to this that I first thought". Happened to me in the Lion's Den.

Don't like it, don't visit. I like it, and I think we had some good stuff in there. It is not about controversy, it's about "foreign exchange", for a lack of a better term. I hope it will be populated again, if only for us to communicate as people to people.

OK, fine! So they weren't "words of wisdom"!!!

As you say, Ilse, it had nothing to do with anything that was going on there this past week, or so. As I began my post:

A few "themes" that I'd like to talk about this morning that have been on my mind for a spell, but that I perhaps have not adequately addressed.

I should have addressed this stuff way earlier, but didn't. Partially because I'm not as wise as I like to think I am, partially because Sophia was ill, partially - maybe mostly - because the issue, War with Iraq, that was causing most of the friction, was doing the same, x10, at home here ... still is, sort of ...

Probably, I should try addressing all this stuff again! Yet, it feels too much like ... work!

So, anyway ...

Ilse you were selected & bestowed with the great honor of moderator here because of who you are ... keep on plugging. The Lions Den, like the rest of this board, will be what it will be. The Lions Den, like the rest of this board, will have its cycles. It'll come around again. Where's Anth when you really need him?!?

Love ya, Babe!

Like Ilse, I was also a little bemused by your comments, and now that you have replied, I have surmised that there are things going on behind the scenes, that the general poster doesn't see. Would I be right? If that is the case, then either it should be dealt with behind the scenes with whoever has the problem, or it should be brought out in the open where it can be dealt with. I think the 'in-between' mention of something being wrong, without details, just makes things worse, because then it is left to other people to guess, misinterpret or misunderstand - a recipe for disaster.

I agree with Chris, if it is not your idea of fun, don't play there! And if you do want to join in, then just remember to count to ten, take a deep breath, and re-read what you have typed before you post it! More often than not, I think, it is not the content of a post that offends someone, so much as the attitude with which it is written.

Happy posting!!

You are sort of right, Huggy ...

Let's just say Lainey and I were/are at odds over this issue. So, it was getting inflamed here, on the board, partially due to flames here, at home.

Get me drift?
