Last night I watched most of it. I too can't believe he didn't
add 20 - 30 extra minutes. I remember reading in the musings how
Mann was upset while filming, and had to cut out many scenes.
As I watched it, I was happy to see the small extra scenes here
and there. I felt..anymore is better. But, I did notice what he
cut out too....
"I" don't miss the line "Got nothing better to do on the lake
today"... because I thought it was too jovial to say while they
are fleeing for their lives. And the other line "Serious disagreement"...
I always thought it sounded a bit too modern, it goes more with today's
movies. Kind of like Arnold's S. "I'll be back" signature lines.
My BIGGEST disappointment is of course the omittance of Clannads
"I will find you". WAS HE OUT OF HIS MIND!!! It's one of the most
powerful parts of the movie. Big mistake. Why didn't he consult us?? Dummy....
I was watching for all the bloopers thinking now's his chance
to correct them. The only one he took out was the scene at the
massacre. No more megaphone and baseball caps.
I liked the extra scenes at Fort William Henry during the
battle. Great scene of Duncan commanding the troops to "Fire".
Nice volley's there..
Plus after the surrender you see the French going into the fort.
I was "really" hoping for more between Uncas and Alice. What
a let down. Mann just doesn't care about us..sniff....sniff....
An extra line with the French general talking to Magua about
having to fight the same soldiers again. That was good.
The extra walking scenes of the captured girls and our heroes after them were nice. Like I said more is better.
The last scene is great in the regular version. This one...well
it's a nice tribute to all the indian people. Which I think is
something we don't see much in today's movies. So, it's ok with
me. But, the whole movie kind of does that anyway....so it's
really not needed. Like Marcia said the original spoke volumes.
My final thought is - I wish we could take all the good from
both versions and make it one.
I think we'll all stick with the THX version 1st.
