The trick to enjoying JFC's Hawkeye is to regard 95% of what drivels out of his mouth as thoughts that are never spoken. Otherwise Natty is the Cliff Claven of the woods.

The books are oft criticized for their VERY unlikely dialogue - particularly annoying are the stoic dissertations that come from Natty’s pie-hole during action scenes.

But, if you can past that, the descriptions of the Woodland Culture, the nature and the story are well worth the read.

As for the annoying Psalmist…good riddance. I kept waiting for him to disappear like one of those red jerseyed unknown losers that beam down with Kirk as alien fodder.
