Magua got into a scrap with one of the Day-Lewis/Bumppo kids while still a small child. This was the beginning of his life long feud with the Delaware/Mohican/Hawkeye gang.

Just to tie up some loose ends here. Dutchie indeed moved up the Dutch societal ladder by marrying into the Van Rensselaer dynasty. He did very well for himself, and gathered a small fortune. Tragically, though, after a few years he fell prey to a debilitating disease called the "Fighting the Windmills Madness" (yes, there was that other guy more famous for it, but he lived in Spain, so that can't possibly be the real thing), and had to be locked up in an asylum. Here he spent the remainder of his days, frantically calling out to some guy called "Natty" to come and save him. Of course this Natty character was only a product of his deranged mind. Mystery surrounds his death. According to legend the Mighty Miller of the Midlands played a suspicious role in that. He was layed to rest in the family grave and on his gravestone were put the beautiful words: "Dutchie; thought you'd never go"
