I know what you mean about not being able to find a suitable term. It is my impression that many Native Americans seem to prefer simply "Indian." It really varies depending on where you are and who you're talking to. Russell Means has said he "despises" the term "Native American," because by that measurement, ANYONE born here, no matter what cultural background, could be called Native American, and he considers that yet another in a long line of sub-conscious diminishments of the people. He seems to use the term 'Indian' more than any other.
Speaking of terms, though, I dislike the term "barbarian" used to describe Indian cultures. It's like the word "savage" -- makes me cringe. Ah, words are such a trip.
