Myrrh, I agree with you. The terms "barbarian" and "transition to civilization" seem to be quite out of place when referring to indian cultures (but Europeans like I do use them from time to time when talking about American mainstream culture - not to be taken too seriously...) By the way: Just recently, I saw a discussion of the terms "Native American" and "American Indian" on another board, in case you are interested to look at it, the URL is www.uconn.edu/NativeTech/msgboard - another very interesting site. My husband, who is Apache, and all his family also say "Indian", that term is no issue to them. To others, of course, it may be.
