What exactly was Duncan doing on the lake?

It seems the only better thing Duncan had to do on the lake was save his own hide. While Nathaniel and the others are scrambling to save the sisters and escape, Duncan was already in a canoe! Once he lost control of his regiment, he was ready to high-tail it out of there. (The last we see of him is when he falls down the embankment).
