I'm afraid I wasn't watching for who got in the front of the canoe, specifically, but I still think when Uncas is shown climbing in, he isn't at the front, but more towards the center, and Hawkeye goes past him to the front. We'll have to see what Soldier #1 or #2 remembers, I reckon.
I wondered the same thing about Duncan's injury. In the final version, I have never had the feeling Duncan had been shot at all. Interesting.
As for the full moon, I'm not sure what you mean. This was a daytime scene, remember? It was only the smoke from the battle that made it so difficult to see. The whole scene comes off so realistically, though, just as I would imagine a real battle of that sort to be...all loud noises and mass confusion, war cries and screams, smoke and gunshots...it's no wonder we can't keep all the details straight. Thank goodness for our two Soldiers who managed to escape the bloody slaughter (even if Magua DID think he left them dead in the cave or wherever.) I'm so glad they are here to share their own memories with us! ;o)
