I could not find Dave Davies new release KINKED in Stores yesterday...most notably Tower Records which is usually right on with new releases ??? While there though I could not help myself from looking for a lot of new and old interesting stuff I have over looked for one reason or another. For my wallets sake I only thought of a few things and only found a couple. I ended up picking up 2 Cd's from 2 bands that for some reason always stayed under the radar from making it big? I picked up the Creation's CD " Our music is red with purple flashes " this was another band that Shel Tamy took under his wing and produced in the 60's along with our KinKs. I think they had the potential like The Pretty Things to go on to fame and fortune but for one reason or another never did. It's lucky for us The KinKs somehow managed to break out of that force field that a lot of bands of equal caliber & talent ( at that time ) were all trying to achieve. The 2nd CD I picked up was by an American band from Tacoma Washington I think they were from...they were The Sonics. This band were pioneers in the American Garage rock scene although never had the success like The Kingsmen, The Standells, or the McCoys, and a whole cascade of others, but who I think were far superior to most and had a profound ( but not credited with ) influence on the late 60's and early to mid 70's bands like Blue Cheer, The Electric Prunes, The MC5, The Flaming Groovies, The Chocolate Watch Band, Shadows of night, and so on...and I'm betting a young Peter Wolf and J. Geils were fans of this band too! - FranK Heard around the Sirius dial last night and this morning... Badfinger's Baby Blue, The Stones with a stellar version of " Don't Lie to Me ", even better than the Flaming Groovies, and a direct derivative of the old blues song " Don't Start me Talking " that The, NY Dolls took to new heights! The Libertines Time for Heros, The Brian Jonestown Massacre with Going to Hell. The Ramones with She's a Sensation off my favorite Ramones album Pleasant Dreams,,, |

Several Years ago I met Jeff Tweedy outside after a Wilco show and we talked about our mutual admiration for Ray and The KinKs so yes he and the band are big Kinks fans and influenced by them quite a bit. Also Wilco's recent live album was engineered by Mike Konopka from Thundertone studios in Chicago. I'm not sure if Mike is going on the road with Wilco though but he was Ray's traveling on the road sound man for most of the 20th Century Man shows and Storyteller tour. I got to know him pretty good. I told him when the Chicago shows were announced and I think he will be at at least one of the shows at the Vic theatre, so if any one knows or remembers him be on the look out for him and say hello to him for me. He is a super nice guy, and congrats to him on his recent marriage too btw! FranK Around the Sirius dial tonight..Keith Richards with Take it so hard, Bloomfield, Kooper & Stills with a Dylan cover of It takes a lot to laugh it takes a train to cry, Wilco with I am trying to break your heart, The Replacements with I will dare ( which has a part with a melody that sounds a lot like part of The Beatles I'm Only Sleeping) Morrissey Everyday is like Sunday, Moby Grape w/Trucking Man, The Smithereens with Blood & Roses ( sounded great in the car and had me doing over 90mph by the time it was over! ), the New Pearl Jam single World Wide Suicide, no new ground breaking changes here for Pearl Jam but the song rocks and as usual their playing is great. I'm looking forward to the new album and seeing them again. Currently they are one of the best live bands to see of the big name bands who play the big venues. And last The Strokes with Vision of Division another band that has been proving itself lately.

A Flock of Seaguls "Telecommunication ", The Runaways " CherryBomb ", J. Geils Band " I don't need you no more", Dean Martin "Volare", Neil Diamond with " Cherry Cherry " ( Neil always got 2 songs fro the price of one when he writes, one was for him and one was for The Monkees with some minor changes)...Sonic Yourth " Sugar Kane", Radiohead " Just", Flo & Eddie with one of the great underated rock songs of all time " CHEAP",...Courtney Love " Hello " ,...Weezer " Perfect Situation",..Pete Shelley "Homosapien",...The Ramones " Rockaway Beach",...LA Guns " One more reason tonight",..The Moony Suzuki ( a great NYC band! ) with " Shake that Bush Again",...The Beachboys with one of my favorites of theirs " Do it Again",...The all girls band The Fondas with " Baby Workout", The Wailers " Louie Louie ", The Ramones again with " It Don't Come Close ",...and why are you still listening to regular commercial radio?
FranK still working on the trajectory equation for proper flight path and altitude for paper plates based on plate coating, wind speed and atmospheric conditions within each venue Ray is playing at. |

Bean: You can quit your calculations and shed your wind speed and atmospheric conditions worries by using china plates. More mass, and a nice smooth ceramic coating will ensure longer, more accurate flight paths. |

Good People: I forgot to watch last night's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction,as I was distracted by a book I was reading. I understand Blondie was inducted for the second time, the Sex Pistols decided to dishonor the honor, and Black Sabbath was finally let in the door. As I reflect on this year's winners I realize that I forgot to buy any of their records over the last three or four decades, even though I am sure these acts were a lot better than they sounded. Strange as it may seem, I did buy a few of Miles Davis' albums, when I was under the impression that his music was Jazz, and not rock. Any of you remember what they used to call Miles Davis in Europe? |

One more reason to get Sirius Satellite Radio... I was playing with my Sirius satellite radio receiver in my car the other morning when I found out you can have 30 presets either set to a particular song title or a particular artist and when ever that song or artist is played on any of the vast channels on the satellite radio dial you will get an audio alert and the display will tell you what channel or channels is playing that particular song or artist, and then you can just scroll the display pointer to that channel hit enter and you are there!...Needless to say I have The Kinks, Ray Davies and Dave Davies all programmed in there..plus a lot of other artist I want to know when ever something by them is anywhere to be found around the dial, such as The Byrds woh I am discovering are one of the most underated bands of all time because I ma hearing so much stuff from them that I never heard before that is amazing...same for The Beachboys. Also programmed in my receiver so far right now are The Ramones, The Replacements, Pearl Jam, Nirvanna, Neil Young, The Move, Love, The Stooges, Bob Dylan, Patti Smith, John Lennon, George Harrison, The Doors, The Pretty Things, Lucinda Williams, and Jim Carrol's " People who died " just that one song though for him...I stll need to add more. . I am trying to not pick artists that I hear all the time anyway like The Who, Beatles, Stones, ect...I'd rather keep it set for the people I don't hear that often or enough of or those I just want to always know when anything by them is being played. Here's a sample of just what i heard this morning... XTC " Dear God " , Kinks, "Dedicated Follower of Fashion", Ringo " I think therefore I Rock & Roll ", The Byrds " I'll feel a whole lot Better when you're gone",..Pearl Jam " Nothingman ", The Bee Gee's " To Love Somebody", Sleater Kinney " Entertain",...The Doors, " The Changeling",...Jim Carrol " People who died " ( love this song! ) The Vines " Don't listen to the radio"...Cream " NSU", Pretty Things " I'm Calling ",.. Smashing Pumpkins " Drown ",..Ramones " Tonight ",...English Beat " Save it for Later "...Hole " Heaven Tonight ",...Anderson Council " Never stop being 67 " which is and ode to The Beatles " Tommorrow Never Knows " as is The great Smithereens song " Beauty and Sadness ",...The Kinks " Who'll be the Next in Line ", Ray's " After the Fall ",...Jerry Garcia " Rubin and Cherise ",...Patti Smith Ask the Angels, The 4 Seasons " Big Girls Don't Cry ", The Beachboys " Heroes and Villians ",..Sonny Boy Williamson " It's sad to be alone ",...Bob Dylan " Dark Eyes ",...Jefferson Airplane " Crown of Creation ",...The Clash " Lost in the Supermarket",...The Byrds " You ain't going nowhere" ...and that's that! And that was all within a couple of hours and NO Commercials to boot, every 15 minutes or so the on air DJ and host will talk for maybe a minute or two and then it's back to the music. Anybody serious about music and who spends a lot of time listening to the radio should really consider satellite radio if not Sirius than look in to XM which I would think is just as good but I don't know..but at least you won't have to listen to the same crap over and over. ( and only a handful of songs from artists who have so much more ) Don't let some marketing executive, or program director who wouldn't know a good record, song or band if flew right up to him and Ka-Bonged him over the head, force down your throat what they think you should be hearing or want you to hear. And btw Did anyone catch Howard on Letterman the other night on his " I hate Les Moonves tour "

Rich,
I stopped by Pauls Diner to collect and had to open a checking account! What's up with that? I didn't get a dinner but received a toaster instead. I then walked across the street to get a Carvel cone and wound up in a bagel store. I'm so confused.........
RE: "From a Distance" wasn't that from one of those Byrds reunion CD's with Chris Hillman about 12 years ago?
I'm off to toast a bagel for dinner................ |

Doc: I am not sure about that Byrds CD, or the CD's which seem to be on the menu at Paul's Diner. I will assume that you are right, as I find my musical knowledge pales beside some of the contributors to this site (Hello, Bean). To make up for your inconvenience I will buy you a Carvel Sundae next Wednesday (buy one, get one free day) here in Las Vegas, where we now have a couple of stores. Also, I need a case for my Fender Bass VI. Any suggestions? The guitar doesn't fit in my Precision Bass case, which would have been convenient. I see a reissue of a circa 1963 Fender Bass VI case on Ebay for $169.00. Is that a good deal? Or should I look elsewhere for a case, or a gig bag? See you at Carvel's..... |

I've been told by One Who Knows These Things that if you have Sirius Satellite Radio, you can pre-set up to 30 artists, and you will get an alert when any song by those artists appears on any of the system's many channels. The obvious question: If you had access to Sirius Radio, what 30 artists would you program in for alerts?
I'm still thinking...
Ok here's about 40 that came to mind right away.. please note they are not in any particular order below so other than The kinks, Ray and Dave don't assume the order below means anything other than that's just what came to my mind as I was writing the list .
So of these 40 I need to trim off 10...I'll have to take some time to think about which ones, and I'm sure there wil be some changes, to this list after I think about if for awhile.
Also this does not mean that these are my 40 all time favorite bands, I mean some of them are but my choices were made on this basis, I wanted to pick artists that don't normaly get a lot of air play or if they do only a few songs from their entire history ever gets played where as on Sirius satellite radio you are liable to hear anything from bands and artists you like not just the chosen few songs some dope who is a marketing executive or program director has chosen are suitable to be played, so I left out some popular bands that I like that get their share of air play like the Who, Stones, Zeppelin, Beatles, Hendrix
The Kinks Ray Davies Dave Davies The Ramones Love The Byrds The Doors Lucinda Williams The Beachboys The 4 Seasons Roy Orbison Bob Dylan George Harisson John Lennon The Move T-Rex The Ny Dolls The Stooges The Replacements The MC5 The Move The Pretty Things Pearl Jam Nirvanna Grateful Dead Jerry Garcia Band Patti Smith Mott the Hoople King Crimson NRBQ Black Crowes The Faces Zombies Spirit Slade Velvet Underground Eddie Cochran for singer song writer types I prefer Ryan Adams, Ben Lee, Pete Yorn... also glad to see The Blasters and the English Beat, I like both of them a lot too. I would add them but I am already over the limit! I had to even spare Grahm Parker and I like him a lot too. Same for Wilco? I had a few of the ones you had on your list too, like J Mascus and dinosaur jr. CCR, The Pumpkins but I'm still trying to scale my list down. OK revisions to my list.. and see noite below for what the * means. The Kinks * Ray Davies * Dave Davies The Ramones* Love The Byrds * The Doors * Lucinda Williams The Beachboys * The 4 Seasons * Roy Orbison * Bob Dylan * George Harisson * John Lennon * T-Rex * The Ny Dolls The Stooges * The Replacements * The MC5 The Move The Pretty Things * Pearl Jam * Nirvanna * Grateful Dead * Jerry Garcia Band * Patti Smith * Mott the Hoople King Crimson NRBQ Black Crowes The Faces * Zombies Spirit Slade Velvet Underground Eddie Cochran * Neil Young * Ryan Adams * Frank Zappa Radiohead Smashing Pumpkins
The one problemn with actually doing these presets is the only way to do it is when you are actually hearing the artist on the radio that's when the menu option lets you add the artiist that is playing so you can't add someone until you are actually hearing them first so I don't have everyone I want pre-set yet.
I put an * next to the ones above that I really have preset right now the rest are just on a wish list and some will replace others when I actually hear them. I only discovered how this feature works 2 days ago otherwise I would have all the ones I really want set already because I have heard at least one song from everyone on the below list.
The other thing every artists on the presets counts as a seperate entry meaning you need a seperate entry for Dave, Ray and the Kinks, so to scan all the radio channels for them you would use up 3 of your presets...I'm not making these rules up this is just a fact of how it works. I'm not sure if they make different model tuners that can hold more presets, that actually might be an option that I have to look in to because I would like at least 100 preset options. I think that would cover and hold me for awhile because even the below list which is over 30 is not enough!!!
- FranK My Sirius Radio Preset artist alert list ( actual ones on it right now* and some of the ones I would like to have on it and there are more too that have not come in to my head yet ) list not in any particualr order. The Kinks *, Ray Davies *, Dave Davies, The Ramones*, Love, The Byrds *, The Doors *, Lucinda Williams, The Beachboys *, The 4 Seasons *, Roy Orbison *, Bob Dylan *, George Harisson *, John Lennon *, T-Rex *, The NY Dolls, The Stooges *, The Replacements *, The MC5*, The Move, Roy Wood, The Pretty Things, * Pearl Jam *, Nirvanna *, The SmiThereens, Grateful Dead *, Jerry Garcia Band *, Patti Smith *, Mott the Hoople, King Crimson, NRBQ, Sparks, Black Crowes, The Faces *, Zombies, Spirit, Slade, Velvet Underground,Eddie Cochran *, Neil Young *, Ryan Adams *, Frank Zappa, Radiohead, Smashing Pumpkins, * Traffic, Buddy Holly,

No CD's at Pauls; only vinyl. I would check guitar center for a case. They have lots of generic cases. $169 sounds pretty high. I have my basses in gig bags. |

I was thinking the same thing, Doc. I can get a gig bag for sixty or seventy hogs at Guitar Center. Maybe I'll bring the Bass VI down there and try one on for size. I bought my nephew a bass gig bag there last Christmas. Now, an old bass player's query: What is the difference between a Fender Bass and a bass violin? |

I suppose if it flooded I could use one for a boat and the other as an oar. Or, if I didn't care at all...... I could toss the Fender and use the Bass Viol' to play Kilometer Davis' "So What"! |

Tonight driving to work listening to Handsome _DicK Manitoba's show on the Sirius Under Ground Garage Channel, I heard a cover of the Ray penned song " Time Will Tell " by garage punkster Holly Golightly. Anybody ever hear or know of this kover?
Time will tell if I will drift eternally, Through life instead of being someone. All of my life, you are the one, you're on my mind. Have a good time, do what you want, but you will find,
Time will tell if I'll survive. I'd rather be dead than just pretend I'm alive. Time will tell, it's just a matter of time. It's just a matter of time.
Time will tell if we will be the same as now, Or not, if not, then never mind. All of my life, you are the one, you're on my mind. Have a good time, do what you want, but you will find,
Time will tell if I'll survive. I'd rather be dead than just pretend I'm alive. Time will tell, it's just a matter of time. It's just a matter of time.
Time will tell if dreams become reality, For you got me, as long as you want. All of my life, you are the one, you're on my mind. Have a good time, do what you want, but you will find,
Time will tell if I'll survive. I'd rather be dead than just pretend I'm alive. Time will tell, it's just a matter of time. It's just a matter of time. It's just a matter of time.
Also other random samplings heard around the Sirius dial recently are as follows; The MC5 " Looking at you ", Sonny Boy Willimason " That's all I want ", " I'll be your baby tonight " a Dylan cover by Hank Williams Jr.,...Lucinda Williams " Joy ",...One of my favorite lesser know Hollies songs " King Midas in Reverse",..The Greateful Dead " It mustr have been the Roses " and Ramble on Rose", Hanoi Rocks " Taxi Driver",...The Cowsills " The Rain, The Park and other things" ( love that song!),..." I just wanna have something to do" The RAMONES,...The Greenhornes " It returns", The Replacements " Bastards of Young",and " I will Dare"...The Litter " Action Woman",...The Fondas ( a great all girl band ) " Wanna be",..." Isn't it a Pity" Geore Harrison,.." Girl Don't Come " Sandie Saw,..Janis Ian " Societys Child" but my favorite version of this is a cover done by Spooky Tooth on their first album ( amazing cover! ) Richard Thompson " 1952 Vincent Black Lightning " and btw I actually know someone who has one of these and I drove it! ( probably worth 3 of my Harley's ) Squeeze with " Up the Junction " oneof their very Ray/Kinkish sounding songs,...and finally The Kinks themselves with " I'm Not Like Everybody Else"
Are you listening? Around the dial...think I'll sell my radio now that you're not there. Get Satelllite Radio now before you are " Brainwashed " by regular radio in to thinking you actually like or want to hear most of the songs they play. Say no to Meatloaf !

Krankie's Handy Dandy Crow Household tip # 32 Unwanted Vinal can be turned in to rock & roll candy dishes...*** remove vinyl lp from sleeve proceed to stove top (gas preferred) Caution: keep record sleeve away from flame! Turn burner on Put on flame resistant pot holder gloves on hands( although I have done it bare) Hold vinyl 6 to 8 inches over flame while turning & molding vinyl in to desired dish shape. Note A 12 inch record will hold approx. 2 large bags or 22 oz. of M&M's with Nuts or 30 oz. of the plain M&M's. Or 2 lbs of assorted Chuckles candies. Adjust accordingly for 7 and 10 inch records.
*** If you are on a diet and do not eat candy but smoke, dishes can be used as ash trays. Just remember Smoking is Hazardous to your health. Keep fire dept. # and ambulance phone # handy... and Update home owners insurance, living proxies & will just in case. btw I think a Black Oak Arkansas album was my first or one of my first inspirations in trying this? Just another night on the Sirius Radio Around the dial updates..." Out of my Mind " - The Romantics, 53rd and 3rd - The Ramones with oneof their best, The Smithereens " The Wall of Sleep ", The Monkee's " You just may be the one " , " The Mess I'm in " The Fine Lines, Nirvanna " Breed " ( one of my favorites ), Hanoi Rocks " Taxi Driver " ( members of Hanoi Rocks were also in the Little Steven engineered band Demolition 23 which were really good but only put out one record ) The Pretty Things " You Don't Believe me ", " Savage Beat " The Dictators, The Gratefeul Dead " Tomorrow is Forever", Led Zeppelin " Tangerine ", " Death of a Clown " - KinKs, The Byrds " This Wheels's on Fire", The Black Crowes " Remedy ", Social Distortion ( whi lately I have become a big fan of ) with " The Story of my life", The Faces " Had me a real good time", "Double Talking Baby " Gene Vincent, " Dolly Dagger " Hendrix, " Dinah Moe Humm " Frank Zappa and the Mothers from one of my favorite albums " Overnight Sensation ", " Time Bomb " - The Ramones, " He's a Whore " a favorite lesser known Cheap Trick song, " Minor Threat " Look back and Laugh " , " She Belongs to Me " one of my favorite Dylan songs and lyrics too, also " Dylans 115th Dream", " Fool to Cry " - Stones, " Destroyer " - KinKs, Traffic " Hole in my Shoe ", The English Beat " Save it for Later ", Smithereens " Blood and Roses", " I was wrong " social Distortion ", Hole " Celebrity Skin", The Four Seasons " Walk Like a Man", Dusty Sprigfield " I only want to be with you ", Bob Dylan " Mozambique ", Gary US Bonds " A quarter to 3 ", JJ Cale " Magnolia", " Sunny Afternoon " - KinKs, The Blues Project " No time Like the right time ", Howling Wolf " Back Door Man " ( the one the Doors covered ), The Blues Magoos " We ain't got nothing yet", Pearl Jam " World Wide suicide", and finally The Raconteurs the great new band featuring Jack White of the White Stripes with members of another great but obscure Detroit band The Greenhornes, with a song called " Steady as she goes "...if this song is any indication of what the rest of the album is like it they should be a big sucess but knowing the rock and roll intellegence of the average record buying and concert going person they will probably fade away as just another cult and has been band. Sound familiar? And why are you still listening to regular radio, and hearing the same old Billy Idol, Boston, Eagles, Pink Floyd and Bruce songs over and over? btw..I could swear I saw Kim Fowley walking around Riverside Square Mall in Hackensack earlier today? and for those interested DKT/MC5 remaing members of the MC5 with Dick Manitoba of the Dictators will be playing the Northsix in Brooklyn on May 18th. Kick out the Jams Baby Won't ya?

Earlier today I was listening to The Great Lost KinKs album but the bootleg version with all the extra songs on it too. It makes you realize that the period in the late 60's to the early 70's, from around " Face to Face " up to and including " Arthur " and maybe evem Lola vs Powerman and Muswell Hillbillies too ( and after still but not as concentrated ) and to a slightly lesser extent, Ray was beyond a genius. It's absolutely sick the amount of song writing talent that was pouring out of his veins and pores for those 4 or 5 years...if he were a baseball player it would be the equivalent of him hitting 100+ home runs in a season, or if a painter then him painting Picasso's " Boy with a Pipe " or " Dora Maar au Chat " back to back. In other word's is just beyond comprehension. - FranK A random Sirius radio report for the past day or two and just a couple of hours worth of listening; "Esctasy" - The Rasberries " Had to Cry Today" - Blind Faith, " There There" - Radiohead, " She's so Fine " - Jimmy Hendrix Experience, The Ramones " I don't want to grow up ", " Poison "- THe MC5, " Woman is the nigger of the world" - and " Attica State", John Lennon, "Kozmic Blues "- Janis Joplin, " John Wesley Harding "- Dylan, " London Calling- The Clash, " Mr. Brown " On the Radio ", " "Volunteers"- Jefferson Airplane, The Byrds " You ain't goin' nowhere", " Dr Jeckle & Mr. Hyde" The Who, The Sonics " Strychnine", The Headcoats " Troubled Times", " Stride of the Mind" - Patti Smith, " I'll be you " - The Replacements, " Tell all the People " - The Doors, " Rock me"- Stepponwolf, " Stand up Comic " - Ray, " Look for me baby "- Kinks, " Low Budget "- kinks, " Summer Cannibals" - Patti Smith, Willie Nile " Welcome to my head", " Everytime I eat Vegtables I think of you " - Ramones, " Tomorrow is Forever " The Grateful Dead, " Gotta serve somebody " - Dylan, " Death of a Clown "-kinks, " Tangerine ", Zeppelin, " Savage Beat " - Dictators, Nirvanna " Breed", " You don't Believe me"- Pretty Things, " Remedy"- Black Crowes, " Lovers who wander" -Dion, The Byrds " This Wheel's on fire", " The story of my life"- Social Distortion, " Double Talkin Baby " Gene Vincent, " Conspiricy " - Black Crowes, " Had me a real good time" - Faces, "Terrapin Station"- Grateful Dead, Hanoi Rocks " Taxi Driver", "{ Destroyer " and Sunny afternoon - kinks |
