I was able to attend the annual conference of the Allegheny Institute tonite at the Carnegie Museum. www.accdpel.org/01_01.asp While there,I was able to see a short preview of the new movie"The War That Made America" that is scheduled for release to PBS in the fall of 2005.
It wasn't bad,and I may have judged them too soon. (call me biased,but I still think that GWFW is the best documentary of all time  ).
I see a lot of potential for this movie however(after all,it will be four hours long).Since I've discovered that historian Dr.Scott Stephenson is a consultant,I know that the project is in good hands.(all of the uniforms are correct at least).The 42RHR has also been offered a role in this film,so it offers us the opportunity to ensure that "The Blackwatch"will be portrayed properly. |

I almost forgot to mention,that the War for Empire Consortium will display the newly purchased George Washington manuscript at the Ft.Pitt Museum on April 17th 2004.Apparently,GW's biographer was supposed to destroy some of these accounts in Gw's own words(such as Braddock's Defeat)but he didn't,and they've survived to this day.I've also told the Historian at the museum that these won't be good to anybody since one cannot pick them up to read.She told me that they should be available as hand-outs as well.
I met a few people at this event who have an interest in the upcoming 250th anniversary.This includes the fine people from the D.A.R. |

Boy I am lost in the wilderness tonight. Attended a reception last night that dedicated the Washington Trail. It even had the old boy George there to help light the tree in Point State Park. War for Empire is no longer known as that. It is now French and Indian War 250 Inc. It has gone national with Tom Ridge's wife as co-chairperson. The new website is frenchandindianwar250.org

That new name has slick,Persian bazaar kinda sound to it. Kinda like a Fortune 500 Company.What,was there some kind of buyout,or a hostile takeover? And what does Tom Ridge's wife know about history anyway? |

I am still curious to see what they offer. So far, with few exception, they are just marketing events that have been going on for at least the last ten to twenty years. I would like to see them maybe host something new and different. Some kind of event(s) that would allow people to come and learn more about the F&IW? Perhaps, a 'Grand Encampment' type of event, where the public can experience different aspects of the period? Okay, I know 'get real, Sarge', but there is always hope...

My guess is some advertizing exec said "empire" is a non-starter and you need a "name" to head the organization. The ol' "We're the leaders, let's see if we can catch up and get in front."  Once the politicians get their photo op, thing will return to normal.

I have to agree that these events have been going on for a number of years. But with the website, isn't it great to have the extra exposure. It is also great that an important manuscript will stay in Southwest Pa. where it belongs. An educational kit supposedly has been developed. The release of the video in 2005 in effort with PBS. This commemoration goes until 2013 I believe, so there may be more on the horizon. If not, take what you can get. Like I said, the added exposure on local and national levels just gives everyone a chance to share the knowledge with the public that we have gone to great extents to learn. Not to mention the marking of Washington's Trail and hopefully the same with Braddock's Road and Forbes Road.

How about an educational kit that has a video as well?Take Director Robert Matzen for example,creator of George Washington's First War:The Battles for Fort Duquesne." www.paladincom.com He has one heck of a kit that actually trumps "The War For Empire" because the students can actually view a documentary,and they don't have to wait until 2005.
Instead of working with him,WFE & Andy Masich  treats him like a jerk. They are the opportunists,whereas Mr.Matzen came out with "When The Forest Ran Red:Washington,Braddock and A Doomed Army"in 2000.It is obvious that he wasn't trying to take advantage of the 250th anniversary to make a fast buck.
In fact,it appears that he is the only one who is doing anything for it. |

From what I've seen of the website it seems to focused on the French and Indian War in Pennsylvania, but the title doesn't mention this. It gives only the briefest mention of any events outside Pennsylvania. It's almost like they think Pennsylvania was the center of the French and Indian War and that all the most important battles happened there. Perhaps they should change the title to War for Empire in Pennsylvania, to avoid confusion.
p.s. nothing against PA! |

It is a marketing gimmic to bring in tourist dollars. But to be perfectly honest with ya,it really did start here.There is a little place in Fayette Co. called "Jumonville Glen",and there was this guy named George Washington,perhaps you've heard of him, anyway,he runs into these French guys and..............(to be continued) |

I can sleep better now that I know that he's Director of Homeland Security. Hi Seamus,
Good to meet you at Ligonier Days on October 9. The weather held out for the parade. I was honored to lead the parade this year in the #1 position. I am normally about #60, and half-way back in the two hour parade. Heinz percherons and the Budwieser cyldsdales both. Wow! Good to see re-enactors in the parade. I went to the fort after the parade and talked to the visitors on the outside of the fort.
A lot of people had to have their kids stand next to me for photos. I enjoy the kids. I talk on our side of the battles in the area. I was born right down the road from there. It was all Shawnee land at one time. I quit going into the fort, as they have never treated me with respect. The parade committee always invites me and even gives me some expense money. But it really galls me to have to pay to get into the fort, when indian re-enactors with no indian blood in them at all are permitted to enter for free. That, and the fact that some of the fort people have talked to me like I was a dog, in the past.
Again, nice meeting you there. Hope you had a good time. |

I think I saw you at Ligonier Days. We too were in the parade, but not at the fort.
BTW, am proud to say that those magnificent Percherons are owned and driven by my uncle for Heinz.

I enjoyed meeting you,too,however,I regret that we did not have more time to visit. The weather was, indeed, lovely and the crowd watching the parade was awesome.......many rows deep and both sides of the street for the length of the parade and more! We went about 2 blocks beyond the sign which said "End of Parade" because of the people lined up wanting to see the parade. I heard an estimate of 20,000, and being a veteran of such activities, I do believe that estimate.
McMillan, it was good to see you, the Sarge and the Captain, too! Again, I am sorry we did not have the time to visit more. Our reenactor Division was fabulous, eh? The reception we received along the route was one to raise goose-bumps!
Now....the Director of the fort has decreed that this will be the last time reenactors march in the parade if they are registered at the fort. No kidding! That narrow-minded edict was handed down! If our appearance caused 50 people to come to the fort, and I am certain it did, and maybe more, then the fort picked up some good cash from it. He seems not to understand that it is cheap FREE PR, and it does not take away from the fort activities at all. We are in the front of the parade so we can get done and back to the fort in good order. The Chamber of Commerce is willing to work with that. After all it is Fort Ligonier Days, isn't it?? Why, then, does the Director not understand its value to the fort?? Boggles my mind..... If every unit marched and left the fort barren of troops, I could understand, but to say , "If you march in the parade, you don't play at the fort. You choose: here or there." is really a bad decision.
Anyway, enough of that. Good seeing you guys, and maybe another time we can sit and visit.

| It was good to see you and the men cousin.I agree that the parade was indeed good pr for the fort.Talk about cutting off one's nose to spite their face.I look for an even bigger reenactor presence at the parade next year despite the ultimatum. |

It was fantastic to see all of you there; and Seamus I agree with you that 20,000 was a 'spot-on' estimate. It is functions like the parade that generate interest from the public. I am also glad that the speaker of the parade did take the time to include a short bio of each recreated unit's role in the history of the region.
