Hello, All,
Just happened to watch last night's broadcast of The American Film Institute's 100 Years, 100 Passions. This three hour broadcast, in their words, "revealed the 100 greatest love stories of all time." I hadn't been watching for very long when suddenly...there was our own DDL! Coming in at #87 was "The Unbearable Lightness of Being."
WELL! When I saw that, I HAD to stay up & watch the whole thing because surely, LOTM had to be included on that list! Believe it or not, LOTM did NOT make it!
I went to the AFI webpage today & read their list of the 400 nominated movies, and I discovered that DDL had no less than THREE films nominated! One of them, of course, was "The Unbearable Lightness of Being" and the others were "The Age of Innocence" AND "The Last of the Mohicans!" I cannot believe that LOTM was nominated and then not chosen! How can ANYONE watch this film and not feel the passion and the power of the love story between Hawkeye and Cora??? Obviously, the folks at AFI are a breed apart and they make no sense!

I watched this, too, Diane and I must say I agree. How could these people miss the passion in that scene? So I started thinking that perhaps I missed something so, of course, it behooved me to watch it again (and again...)to see what it might have been that I missed. After excessive heavy breathing, fanning, and a shower I decided that these people are nuts!! Come on, people...KING KONG??!! Puh-leaze!

Hey Diane, here's an article from the July issue of Premiere magazine:
PREMIERE MAGAZINE July issue has a short item called THE PERFECT KISS-- Daniel Day-Lewis and Madeleine Stowe in LAST OF THE MOHICANS-- "This unforgettable cinematic kiss takes place, remarkably, between two fully clothed actors in an 18th century literary adaptation: the bodice bursting buss between Daniel Day-Lewis and Madeleine Stowe in Michael Mann's THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS. There are not many other movies with such an enchanting kiss says cinematographer Dante Spinotti who achieved the fine framing and glowing light that showcase the actors' convincing ardor-- not to mention great HAIR-- in the scene, and who counts it as a personal favorite.
Spinotti and Mann meticulously executed the scene, which is set during the French and Indian War. Filmed at night on a North Carolina set standing in for Fort William Henry in New York, the scene begins as Haweye, a white man raised by Indians, leads Cora, a British colonel's daughter, to a secluded area in the ramparts. Inspired by the French Baroque paintings of Georges de La Tour, Spinotti created warm natural lighting with a flickering fire on one side of the actors, augmented by red lamps behind big scrims. "The camera starts looking down at the courtyard, then slowly pans up to our two lovers," he says. "They start kissing each other with this amazing sensuality. It's the hunger of the two souls. It expressed the need of coming together, almost as if you solve the issues of history with a kiss in those days."
Day-Lewis and Stowe osculated under Mann's direction from midnight until sunrise, but the director wasn't satisfied with their level of lust. "We did reshoot it, because Daniel and Madeleine were fully clothed, but the kiss wasn't naked enough" says Mann. "We went back a second time to get it." That night, everyone on the set felt the heat, and it wasn't just from the fire. "It's a quintessential erotic, emotional moment. You can't fake it, you can't act it. It's real. It was absolutely in the air between them."-------
So, there you go!

I'll say!!! Wow! Great write-up! Just goes to show, if you do it right, you don't need all the blatant sex so many directors toss about.

Hi, Theresa,
Thank you SO MUCH for sharing this! Combine this scene with "Under the Falls" and there is no doubt that this is one of the greatest on-screen love stories EVER! "I will find you! No matter how long it takes, no matter how far, I will find you!"
This is further proof that the folks at AFI are clueless! How could they possibly choose King Kong over LOTM?! Does anybody really believe that there was a "love story" between a giant ape and a woman?!
Day-Lewis and Stowe osculated under Mann's direction from midnight until sunrise, but the director wasn't satisfied with their level of lust. Can you imagine..."having" to kiss DDL from midnight until sunrise?! I don't know what they paid Madeleine Stowe, but just for the privilege of shooting that one scene, I would have done the whole damn film for free!
See you next week!

Hi, Theresa,
One thing I've learned about acronyms: if they're NOT an abbreviation for something "dirty," they can be turned INTO an abbreviation for something "dirty!" I've got my own thoughts on ROTFLMAO!
See you in a couple of days!

Diane, I LOVE acronyms! Love you hear yours on ROTFLMAO!!
After four days and a bit of Mohicaness, maybe between the two of us we can come up with our own version of some Mohcianland acronyms.
Looking forward to meeting you.

Well, Theresa,
Let's see...we were drooling - er, talking about kissing DDL from midnight til sunrise & you responded with ROTFLMAO...I believe that roughly translates into "Right On The Face, Lips, Mouth and All Over!" OK, I probably missed a word here or there, but you get the idea!
I guess we'd better watch it or else we'll soon have this Board to the point where parents will have to block their kids' access to it!
Well, I'd better get back to packing: as soon as I get home tomorrow afternoon, we're heading west (to Buena Vista) to spend the night & pick up our camper, & then we're planning on being up early on Wednesday & driving the rest of the way. I've still got lots to do - and where is my "other half" right now? Why, in his recliner with his remote in one hand, and in the other... Good Lord, I'd better behave myself! After all, I've got to count on him to help with the driving, expenses, etc!!! I'm so bad - and I haven't even had one beer!
I'm looking forward to meeting you, too - and I'm looking forward to trying some Mohicaness!
Regards,
Diane B. a.k.a. Rattlesnake Woman

Hi, I'm new here! I don't care if LOTM makes doesn't make the AFI list. The Kiss easily ranks among best love scenes I have EVER seen, past or present! One review of LOTM that I read stated that, quote: "Madeleine Stowe and DDL generate more chemistry than a Viagra factory". I absolutely concur with this sentiment! Stuff the AFI list!!!

Not to burst any bubbles but ROTFLMAO means:
<chat> Rolling on the floor laughing my ass (arse) off. An extreme form of ROTFL.
I didn't have a clue what ROTFLMAO meant either, I just copied and pasted into a search engine and viewed the results. Personally, I like Diane B.'s definition better, especially if it refers to DDL!
