The Fort Howard Area is another small section of the Heritage Hill State Historical Park in Green Bay. It consists of four buildings, two original and two replicas built in the 1980's. The fort itself dates from 1816, though the original site was across the Fox River on lower land nearer to the water. The Heritage Hill site served in the 1820's as an outpost called Camp Smith; the apparant remains of a soldier from this period was discovered here in 1938 during placement of the first relocated historic structure and are now located in their own Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Display buildings include, left to right, the Hospital ( original, ca. 1834 - 35 ); Post Schoolhouse ( replica ); Company Kitchen/Orderly Room ( original, ca. 1831 - 35 ); and an Officer's Quarters ( replica ):

I was most interessted in the Hospital, both as an original building and for its setup. Originally built outside the Fort Howard stockade, it later stood on a Green Bay street corner before coming here. Inside, one large room is a ward, behind which are smaller storerooms, office, pharmacy, and lastly the surgery, complete with operating table:
