[ This is somewhat confused/confusing - it refers to the original "Core Group", of which there seem to have been 27 ( 28 if you count Youngblood ). I don't know where the number 24 comes from; it's probable that was the number planned and then likely altered by circumstances. This sort of confusion no doubt riddles the entire Casting List, but this is the only part of it I'm familliar enough with to specifically comment on. - JN ]

[ This new alphabetical list is REALLY confusing - these men didn't show up until AFTER the "Ambush" filming was completed! They seem to be added to the 28 British Military Core above, but obviously don't add up to the 100 called for; most of them are designated as NC locals, too. Also as you can see, many are designated as "French", though we were nowhere near to filming those scenes yet, and as usual in a production like this we "played both sides". As far as I can tell, these plus our original group provided background soldiers for most of the filming. - JN ]

As I indicated, the first of these new additions didn't show up until we completed the Ambush scene, filmed June 17 - 26 at Linville Falls. My notes show that "Dale F. & I trained 150 at Firefighters Camp" July 1 for scenes filmed the following day at both the "Albany" set in Asheville and at the Biltmore estate. The latter scene, deleted from the movie itself but surviving in "bits and pieces" in The Making of... video, consisted of a sequence showing what was supposed to look like the entire 60th Foot drawn up in line-of-battle. ONLY our Ambush/Military Core moved ( so that the newcomers wouldn't have to try to keep in step! ), marching up on the end; when in position, then the entire regiment "Made Ready", "Presented" our muskets, and "Fired" a volley. This brief scene was intended to show how soldiery was trained by rote to fight in close-order formation, prior ( in the movie ) to having our company slaughtered by Magua's men fighting "wilderness-style" in the Ambush scene. Here we are rehearsing at Biltmore for the firing, directed by stunt coordinator Mickey Gilbert ( at far left in the straw hat ), who was directing the 2d unit for this scene:

"Sortie" as mentioned in the list, indicated a scene, deleted in the "Theatrical Version" but restored in the so-called "Director's Cut" and intersperced with the action usually called The Courier where Hawkeye makes his impossibly long shot covering the messinger sent to Webb. Also known as Heyward's Diversion, the Sortie consisted of a group of British Grenadiers popping out of a trench to surprise the French who are in pursuit of some Mohawk raiders outside the walls of the fort. WHY the Casting List specified persons for this scene not filmed until so much later is now unknown. Here is a photo taken near dusk ( the scene was filmed at night ) of the sortie group rehearsing for the shoot, conducted by my friend Steve Abolt ( in front row with the serjeant's halberd or polearm - I THINK Scott Swenson is on the far left ); he was the only one of our group ( including Dye! ) who had any idea of how to perform the maneuver to get out of the trench:

Well, there's another name! Steve Abolt. I know him from Fort Jackson in Alabama. He is the absolute authority on 1812, and one really nice guy.

Steve was really good at handling both the Dales, too; of course he knew a proper period maneuver to get the grenadiers out of the trench and into line whereas nobody else did. ( I'm sure Dye took credit for it to Mann though. ) He was also able to put Fetzer in a good humor as well. I also worked with Steve on The Price of Freedom and Legacy ( about the Mormon Trek, filmed for Temple Square's Visitor Center ), both films by Kieth Merrill.

Hey, this might be a bit off-topic but do you (James N.) happen to know about any other scenes besides the one you mention in this thread that were filmed for sure but cut out from the movie? I don't think I have ever read a list of scenes that were for sure filmed but don't appear in any of the released versions. This sort of list would be a good addition to this site!

As I've said before in other posts, while the possibility always exists that there *might* be SOME, it's more likely variant camera angles of existing scenes that we have yet to see. This wasn't exactly a deleted scene, but would've been a "bit" in the sequence where Heyward arrives in his coach. It rumbled across in our background, and the soldiers were then "seen" by him drilling. The only actual deleted scene I'd previously missed ( during the Theatrical run and first VHS version ) was the so-called Sortie/Heyward's Diversion; its inclusion is why I prefer the Director's Extended Cut DVD over the other versions of the film.

Did you get a chance to check out that teaser trailer in another topic a while back? There were those alternate angles of familiar scenes you mention but there were short clips of unseen footage also.

No; with my dialup internet provider I studiously avoid any sort of film clips on my computer since they take FOREVER to download!
