A dredging crew whose job it was to remove PCBs from the Hudson River managed to tear out two beams that had once been part of Fort Edward's waterfront bastion, after having been warned to stay away from that bank. Their excuse? The area was covered with silt. Maybe that was the reason for the warning?!!! Here's the site:

Apologies for citing to the Huffington Post, a left-of-political-center website, in a non-political forum, but I looked for a similar article elsewhere and couldn't find one.

Oh, brother. [WW shakes her head in absolute disbelief.)

I will stoicly refrain from saying anything about the IQ of those workers.

Bookworm.....what's with the new name??

Here's more info: (NOT....from Huffington!!)

http://www.timesunion.com/AspStories/story.asp?storyID=831609&TextPage=1

http://www.poststar.com/articles/2009/08/14/news/local/doc4a85aa8554c9b255221645.txt

While basically what Huffington reported, this one is interesting because of the comments.

And here is a link to several stories about the whole dredging controversy:

Finally, one more interesting story on the subject of Fort Edward and Rogers' Island:

At a minimum, they probably wouldn't appreciate the logs being referred to as a "piece of ****"! Thanks for the links.

Mis- or non-communication seems to be par for the course anytime an operation like this has to be conducted within certain limits. Mike, are you familiar with the relatively new traffic light at Route 11 and Post Road? As construction was going on there, the homeowner whose house faces the traffic light came home one day to find, much to his shock, that the two large trees that had been at the edge of his yard that morning weren't there any more. Much finger-pointing ensued, but I don't think they ever did pin down who gave the order to remove the trees.

As for my new name, it is not, contrary to rumor, the result of any sort of alliance with Monadnock Guide. When I tried to sign on this past week, the system would not recognize my username and password, yet when I tried to start over by creating a new account, the system told me I couldn't use Bookworm because it was already in use. Systems are like that. Anyway, I added my initials in desperation, and Rich restored my stars so I wouldn't look like a newby.

AHA! I thought perhaps the new nombre was a result of something like that....thanks!

Yes, I have heard about the Missing Trees Caper......doubtful if the culpable will ever be known.

With todays navigation technology, there's absolutely no way for them to hit something by accident, assuming that they knew the exact location of the item. That was either carelessness or not knowing the timbers were in that spot.
