I got to see the new Star Trek movie yesterday ... ooh yeah!
IMO, this is the best ST flick ever! Three little sylables will explain why: ***NO SHATNER***
Basically, it's 2:07 of action & FX, AND it's character driven! How cool is that?
Without giving away too much of the plot, which is somewhat complicated, let's just say that Kirk's a jerk (and this is different, how?) and Spock (new and old) save the day. Like I said, it's complicated... There are homages to several old Star Trek flicks and even a Star Wars-type scene!
Of the new characters,
my favorite--Spock, very conflicted
closest to the original--'Bones' McCoy, whadd'ya know, Pathfinder can act, after all!
I'll quickly mention two scenes only:
1)You've probably seen the trailer where they sky-dive from 20k toward that drilling platform. There was Kirk, Sulu, and some guy wearing a red shirt. Guess who dies immediately? (Like we couldn't see that coming?)
2)Kirk getting in Spock's face to set off his anger; it works all too well; Spock then beats the living sh*t out of Kirk. I loved it!
Lastly, my favorite line, "I am not OUR father!"

I'm a Trekkie from way back when the original series was in reruns in the early 70's. I can't wait to see this movie. I was just too busy last weekend. Hopefully this weekend. . .

Star Trek, huh? Ummmmmmm, I guess that I'm just not a trekkie. Never have been into it. In fact, I can remember many a fight over the t.v. when the old series was on because my older sister just had to watch it and I couldn't stand it. Interestingly enough, I loved Lost In Space.  Yeah, you have to remember that I was just a kid.

I hope to see the Star Trek movie this weekend and I was a big fan of the original growing up. I had such a "crush" on Capt. James T Kirk  and Kaylynn I loved watching "Lost in Space" too. I also had a bigtime "crush" on the boy in the show  That robot was something else and I agree about "Dr Smith" he was a nasty piece of work. "Never fear Smith is here"

Lost in Space????? Man, that was a real dog! I watched the pilot & never ever looked at another episode. It was worse than Space 1999!

Space 1999 I used to watch that too on the telly Obi. Thanks for the memories. I did enjoy it.
Well I was a kid watching "Lost in Space" and thought it was great. I recall seeing some of it when I was adult and it seemed kind of lame, all done in a studio LOL.
Anyone recall another show I watched as a kid called "Land of the Giants"?
Loved watching "The Thunderbirds" as well. What childhood memories. |

I don't remember "Land of the Giants" but I do remember the original "Land of the Lost."
I vaguely "Thunderbirds." I really liked "Herculoids", "H.R. Puffinstuff", and "Here Comes the Grump". |

How come it is very hard for me to imagine you watching H.R. Pufnstuf??? I watched it as a kid because I was wildly in love with Jack Wild, but what was your reason??? Witchie Poo maybe???

I didn't watch The Banana Splits too much. Guess there just wasn't a cute boy on there for me to be interested in it. but I do remember the theme song, or at least some of it. La la la... la la la la...la la la... la la la la One banana, two banana, three banana, four..... and that is all I remember. I will have to go to Youtube and try to refresh my memory.
The shows that I watched usually had the teeny-bopper heart throbs in them..... Partridge Family (David Cassidy), Here Come the Brides (Bobby Sherman),The Monkees (Davy Jones), H. R. Pufnstuf (Jack Wild), Dark Shadows(No heart throb, but I never missed an episode) Gee, it's nice to go down memory lane.

I still can't believe that Sid and Marty Krofft named a show with a drug connotation. They deny it but they did it as a joke. I remember Captain Kangaroo reading Puff the Magic Dragon too. What a trip.
As a young child I was completely in love with Penny Robinson from Lost in Space, real name Angela Cartwright.
The original Star Trek was the only show my family watched together. I saw Gene Roddenberry speak as a young kid. He made jokes about his wife (Nurse Chapel - Majel Barrett) having the hots for a Vulcan. They showed the pilot show, The Cage, and it freaked me out. I found out that Jeffrey Hunter got bumped out of a job by William Shatner. How much different it would have been had the Enterprise been commanded by Christopher Pike. They chopped the pilot up and turned it into a two part episode, The Menagerie. At least Jeffrey Hunter didn't have to suffer the indignity of playing the banged up Capt. Pike. That went to Sean Kenney. |

I've been able to watch the Monkees on RTN and I really like that show! That was one of my mom's must watch shows when she was my age. My favorite is Davy (he's not only cute but short like me). My mom's was Micky. Mom and Dad always talk about H.R. PufnStuf!

You can find drug connatations in alot of things if you really try. I look at Pufnstuf as a kid's program. If Sid and Marty Kroft ever meant for it to be something other than that, then as a child, I was unaware of it.
As for "Puff the Magic Dragon", you will always have people that think the song was about drugs and others who think that it is about the loss of childhood. Peter Yarrow has always claimed that it was never about drugs, but there are people that will never be convinced about that. I prefer to think of childhood songs and shows as just that and not something associated with drugs.

My older sister loved Mickey too and we would argue about who was cuter.

Not quite...according to Geekvolution, "the real reason Jeffry Hunter decided not to go on with the series was that his wife didnt take it seriously and thought it would destroy his career." Health-wise, he probably would not have made it through the whole series anyway--he had some major alcohol-related and other problems and passed away from a fall down the staircase at his home in 1969, at age 42. In actuallity, he preferred acting in Westerns...I refer you to The Searchers and Sergeant Rutledge, for example (these are great movies).
One last thought for now: William Shatner and Hayden Christiansen are without doubt the LUCKIEST guys in all scifi filmdom! Neither one can act their way out out a paper bag (or a mudpit), yet each fell into the two most iconic roles in scifi: James Kirk and Anakin Skywalker! |
