This folder I've created as a dedication to my favorite LOTM character, Uncas, that brave warrior with a proud dignity that cannot be matched.

Why do you think Uncas really went up to the cliffs to save Alice? Do you think he was feeling pressured by Hawkeye always rescuing Cora? He had just seen Hawkeye save Cora from the Hurons. Do you think he was thinking, "Hey, can do that, I can save Alice!" or do you think he was so head-over-heels in love with her that he did it for love?

Keneta,
I believe Uncas had feelings for Alice....not sure how deeply he felt. Perhaps if they had both survived, then we would have known.

Yeah, I agree, he did have feelings for her, but were they strong enough to die for, or was going up against Magua and his thugs something Uncas would have done for anyone. This is something we'll never be quite sure of.

Keneta,

I don't know his motivation. He (and others) had so much invested in these people that he was doing all he could to see to it that they survive. I believe he did what he did in order to save Alice, perhaps knowing that Hawkeye and Chingachgook weren't far behind and could help out. I mean, afterall the three of them took care of things on the George Road, got them safely to the Fort, survived Massacre Valley...I could go on and on. So, I guess what I'm saying is that whether his feelings were strong enough to die for her or not, he was doing all he could to save her regardless.

I think you've summed it up there purty good Theresa! I will never forget... gathering before last when, during the movie at the Skyland Arts Cinema, Uncas puts his hand on Chingachgook's shoulder and heads up the hill, Ellen crying out..."NOOOOO, DON'T GO UP THERE". Or something to that effect! If he had JUST waited!!!!

That was Ellen wasn't it? Dear sweety that she is!!!

dunno....judging by the book, he went to save her (or, following the book, cora) because of his love for her.... but in the movie, all there seemed to be between him and alice was puppy love....so i think that he would have done exactly the same thing if it had been cora or duncan that the hurons took, minus the loving gazes in between blows, of course

LOL! I too think that it was puppy love that fueled their relationship, but I think the reason he went up on the cliff was because maybe it was what Chingachgook and Hawkeye expected him to do. For instance, Hawkeye and Chingachgook are really the only ones that do some major carnage, Uncas is really just sitting there in the background. I guess either he wanted a place in the spotlight, maybe he was a bit jealous that his adopted white brother was better at war then he was, or maybe Chingachgook sort of motioned somthing like, you take that one, or something like that, but I dont think that love was the only reason.

i think it might be that he wanted to feel special after natty's heroic deeds...you know, being overshadowed by his big white bro all the time must not have been all that cool. so, in a way, he did it to be a hero.

i know, I can only imagine how Uncas must feel, after being over shadowed by someone that isnt even his own race... you know, being beaten at something that a mohican does best by a white man.

rofl....i dunno, actually....i dont think JFC mentions it in his books. i tend to believe that in the book, chingachgook and uncas were only equipped with knives, tomahawks, and a short military rifle apiece that was provided to them by the british government....don't think there was any mention of a war club anywhere.

they must have wanted to make him more special...or it could have been the actor's idea (darn, his name just flew out of my head!!) i mean, he was a native american...or it could just have been another of mann's enhancements to the story, i mean, he wasnt too big on following the plotline.

I think that he thought to himself that it was time to save the one he really loved. Even though he knew that there might be concequences he still tired to save her. and that probably means that he was head over heels for her. mohicanwarrior

i agree with mohican warrior. i think he knew what the concequences might be but he still tried because she was the only one he'd ever truly had feelings for. why else would someone like him go off by himself and not wait for his comrades? he was a rational man who wasnt being rational at that paticular moment on purpose.

I think Uncas had feelings for Alice. I truly liked his character, and his being brave to run up that hill.
~~I'm still trying to figure out ?WHY? he had a bloody nose going up there? (Unless I've missed something that everyone else has seen) and I've seen this film at least 28 times! lol

Oh, girl, you DID miss something! Our Uncas got his bloody nose from when he leaped through the falls and was carried downstream. Notice when they're on their way to rescue the gals, they're bloodied up. His nose is bloody after he hauls his cute behind out of that stream (THUD!).

Ack, I never tire of the movie either. Now I'm on my secong VHS copy, and my brother got me a DVD player and the DVD for Christmas (he used some money I gave him to buy himself a DVD of LOTM). Anyway, I sure am enjoying the zoom button and like to pop in the DVD sometimes and just jump through the movie. I wish MM had put everything back in the movie, made it 4 or 5 hours long!
