I think he really loved her.. cos of the scene before he died when he was slashed by magua..and he has that intense exchange of looks with alice...maybe for alice..it could have been puppy love..as she was suppose to be eighteen??..but point to note that in hte 18th century..girls got married at that age..so it might not have been puppy love too..plus she jumped after he died..but for uncas?? I think he is considerably older and judging from the movie..he was pretty matured..and i think he knew what he was doing the whole time..and the few times he looks at her..the intensity here gives me goosebumps..!!
I think that going to save Alice was the essence of Uncas' warrior spirit, yes DDL was the 'hero' but Uncas was the heroic companion. He had an affinity with Alice although subtle, from the beginning, and going to save her can be seen as a portrayal of his true and corageous character.Maybe i'm just romanticising tho...

I agree with the above post. Maybe Uncas wasn't the main hero of the story, but he was heroic. And that is what I like most his character.
