I went to see this the other evening. I had high hopes for it and I wasn't disappointed. The movie is very well put together, and is pure eye candy for any 18th century afficionado. It is absolutely gorgeous.

The acting is superb: Keira Knightley is a very credible (and very beautiful) Georgiana Spencer, who becomes the most influential woman in England in the late 18th century. Ralph Fiennes is great as her rather stiff, emotionless husband, the Duke of Devonshire, who is a great proponent of that old Double Standard (it's Ok for him to sleep with the servants and to have a live-in mistress, but it's not OK for his wife to do it). Supporting characters do equally as well... Charlotte Rampling as Georgiana's mother who can only tell her daughter to suck it up and bear it all, and Hayley Atwell as "Gee's" best friend who becomes her husband's mistress.

But, the true star of the movie, for me, is the absolutely gorgeous and -- drum roll...... -- quite accurate costumes. It was a real treat to behold.

Is this a girlie flick? Are there any battles? What is the body count? Are there any French?

Just wondering . . . .

I think, Obi, that one needs to be really interested in the 18th century, and in particular, the aristocracy of the 18th century. If you saw and liked "Dangerous Liaisons", you will like this one. If not... you won't. I liked "Dangerous Liaisons" but absolutely hated "Marie Antoinette." I just didn't like the way it was done.

Kay, while Ralph did a fine acting job, please be warned that you won't like his character. Not at all. He doesn't even look particularly handsome, for that matter. He did very well at coming across like a real.... er..... well, I won't say it. I think you get the idea.

Btw, the musical score for "The Duchess" is really pretty, unlike the score for "Marie", which set my teeth on edge.

Well, maybe when it hits HBO or something. That way I can watch it with a remote in my hand, with my finger on the channel button. Marie Antoinette has been showing, but the previews alone turned me off. One I liked was the Affair of the Necklace. But thankfully LOTM has been showing a lot. Last night even. Didn't go off until 1:00 this morning.

Fitz,

I like "The Affair of the Necklace" a lot. Very well done movie, with Hillary Swank in the lead and doing a fantastic job. Costuming was good in that, as well.

I made the mistake of going to the theater to see "Marie." I knew the instant the opening credits began, with the modern rock music behind them, that I was in big trouble. I thought I had gotten into the wrong theater! It was unbelievable. I have no idea what they were thinking, other than to try to imitate the Heath Ledger movie "A Knight's Tale" (which worked well, in my opinion!). You know how you feel about "John Adams"??? Well, that's the way I feel about "Marie Antoinette"! Yuk!

WW,
Thanks for the warning, but it still sounds like a movie that I would like, even if Ralph is a scoundrel.
I know alot of people don't care for Keira Knightley, but I really like her. I think that she is a very good actress!!!

Love,
Kay

Well, I have the Tudors next on my Netflix list, so the Duchess will have to wait, but I look forward to it.

I preordered Tudors season 2 and it came on Thursday. I spent the weekend watching it all over again. Luv it!! So I hope you enjoy it! It's just as good if not better than season one.

Way better than Season 1 and Natalie Dormer is excellent. Jonathan Rhys Meyers is excellent too so too bad neither he nor Michael C Hall won a Golden Globe last night for their performances. Michael C Hall, for those who don't know, plays Dexter in the Showtime series "Dexter". I wanted one of the two of them to win the GG but alas went to Gabriel Byrne for some show I never have watched called "In Treatment".

I was so happy that Anna Paquin won the Golden Globe for her role as "Sookie Stackhouse" in my new favorite series on HBO "True Blood". First season has finished so anyone wanting a good show to watch I highly recommend it.
