Yeah, I have to confess something. I have a guilty little secret.
I went to see "Mama Mia."
And guess what? I......... loved it!
Never mind the fact that Meryl Streep acted a little too... mmmm... I guess "goofy" is the best word to use, and that Pierce Brosnan has the singing voice of a wart hog. I really thought it was great fun.
Now, you have to at least "like" the music of ABBA. If you don't, you had better not go, as the music is practically non-stop. I found the songs incredibly catchy, and caught myself tapping my feet through most of the them.
Meryl Streep has a surprisingly pleasant singing voice, although I certainly won't be putting her on my list of favorites. Colin Firth even did fairly well. Amanda Seyfried has a lovely, sweet singing voice and a charming way about her. I found myself really liking her sweet character. Christine Baranski has quite a set of pipes! I didn't realize that.
But, the real star of the movie, to me, was the setting. Filmed on several Greek Islands, you feel as though you are transported there. The sea is like a gorgeous turquoise stone!
So, if you are looking for a very cute and funny romantic comedy musical, "Mama Mia" is the one to see. I'm glad I did.

My sentiments almost to a tee, Joyce!
Loved it. Laughed, cried, held my ears when PB first started singing. A perfectly delightful movie with breathtaking scenery! |

I saw Mama Mia! in Philadelphia about 2 years ago -- it was so much fun!
If you like ABBA music, there's the movie "Muriel's Wedding", kind of off-beat, weird, and fun. And it features a younger, very different Toni Collette (who was in About a Boy, Sixth Sense..)
On musicals, though... I went to see "Wicked", and I really didn't know what to expect. I loved it ! That's a good one to see, though I don't know if they'll make a movie of it. |

Wait a minute....are you ashamed that you like ABBA music?
You don't blast it proudly on your car stereo as you drive? You don't occasionally pull out your sparkly 70's disco outfit and become a Dancing Queen?
Well, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do..... !!! |

Well Beagles, you see the thing is... back in the 70s I was married to a man who thought that he was...... above, shall we say...... listening to groups like ABBA and a few others who did a lot of disco. He was very into people like Chris Kristoferson, Rita Coolidge, Seals and Croft, and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, etc. So, of course, I "allowed" his musical tastes to influence mine. But!!! Secretly, when he wasn't looking, if an ABBA song just happened to play on the radio, I would allow my toe to tap and my head to bob in rhythm with their catchy songs, like "Dancing Queen." Or, I would sing along under my breath to "Fernando" or "I Have A Dream."
Now.... I am out of the closet! I can freely admit that I have always enjoyed ABBA! Woo-Hoo!!!!!
Yes Kay, Colin Firth is in the movie. It's not a real large role, but he is there and continues to be major eye candy. He is aging nicely, I think. Yum, yum. |

AND has one of the better voices in the film. I love me some Colin too. What that first Mr. Darcy roll did for that fellow...and ME!
Oh, and I forgot to add that another favorite character of mine was Julie Walters part. I have always liked her. She and Christine Baranski make a fine pair of buddies for Meryl. |

I too have been wanting to see this one but haven't gotten around to it. What's not to love about ABBA, best group of all time. I was in school "back in their heyday" and we all loved them. Too bad they broke up too soon. Still listen to my ABBA Gold CD which I have had for years and has all their greatest hits. Now if I could just find time to see the movie. My eldest daughter and I were to go see it but she ditched me for her boyfriend at the last minute and they did something else instead.
I agree about Colin, very yummy as is Pierce. |

Everybody I know who has seen this LOVES it. I'll bet it's terrific--what with the ABBA music and all. I would love to see it, but it is not on the top of my priority list, so we'll see if I get to it.
WW, what is it rated? My daughter loves music, is the plot too mature for a child? |

When I was growing up, we were not allowed to listen to any music other than classical. Believe it or not though, my father who has a Masters in Music, liked ABBA. He said they had very good harmony. Unbelievable! I enjoy them because they are so upbeat! |

I finally got to see Mama Mia! last night. I just absolutely LOVED it!!! My husband and son didn't want to go see it, so I decided to make it a girl's night out with my son's girlfriend and my stepdaughter. We had so much fun!!! There was only one drawback to the movie and I cannot believe that my dear friends on this board didn't warn me about it. Yes, y'all know what I am talking about..... my jaw dropped to the floor when Colin Firth's character (Harry) was attracted to the male persuasion. Yes, my Colin was gay in this movie and Kim and Cindy both laughed so much because they know how much I love Colin and for him to be gay was just too much fun for them and they teased me about it all the way home. That just wasn't right!!!! But as WW and GG have said, the scenery was just too beautiful!!! Meryl Strep can really sing, Pierce Brosnan cannot really sing, and all of the chacter's were cast just right with the exception of Colin and Pierce. I think that their roles should have been reversed. Anyway, I want to thank WW for bringing this movie up or I may not have gone to see it and have a night of singing, dancing, laughing, crying, and jaw dropping.

Well... uh.... er.... I... I got it! I didn't want to give any more ***SPOILERS*** ! Yeah! That's it!
I am so glad you liked it, Kay. It definitely is a chick flic, though. My supervisor, who is a 45-year old female and is highly educated, absolutely loved it, too. She wants to go and see it again. So do I. In fact, my daughter and I tried to go see it this past Monday evening and we got to the theater only to find out it was totally sold out! I couldn't believe it. Turns out, there was a whole camp-full of kids who were brought in to town. They literally took over the whole theater and sold out most or all of the movies. Just my luck! We will try again, though, as Jocelyn really wants to see it.

So that's your story and you're sticking to it, huh? Okay..... but next time Colin is in a movie and he is gay, just warn me ahead of time, so I don't have two silly women laughing at me in the movie theater.

Treated myself to the DVD and just watched it and loved it As a big Abba fan I loved the music and was singing along. This movie made me laugh and smile so much and I do agree about the beautiful scenery. I wish I lived on a beautiful island like that. Pierce singing was hard to watch and listen tobut I adored Meryl Streep. She was perfect as Donna the mother. Excellent job. Didn't even know she could sing. If you haven't bought the DVD I recommend it and they have a singalong feature which is so much fun just like karaoke. I was singing along like crazy with my four year old. I sing like Pierce so you can imagine Just wanted to voice my opinion on this funny, charming, wonderful gem of a movie. |

Glad you liked it, Irish! It's a shame, though, that you didn't see it in the theater first, as it is so visually stunning. It is really gorgeous on the big screen.
I fully intend to purchase the dvd! I'm going to wait until after Christmas, though, in case one of my kids happens to think about getting it for me.
In the meantime, it has prompted me to purchase the ABBA Gold CD, which I love. I will probably end up getting the cd of either the Broadway cast or the movie soundtrack, too. Haven't decided which one yet.

If they don't get it for you, you might want to try Amazon, which has crazy deals on movies right now. I got two seasons of HBO's "Deadwood" for my hubby for a total of $50 less than what I would have paid at Best Buy! AND I got free shipping because the order was over $25. Now if only Amazon's "guaranteed" shipping dates were accurate. . . . |

What an insult to ABBA!
Irish, let me put it this way: last night Mrs. Obi & I watched a brand-spanking-new DVD which was just released yesterday. It's the type of flick she likes as much as I do. It's called Death Race. "Catch my drift?" |

I love ABBA (can't find the backwards B on my keyboard!) and the ABBA Gold cd, but the songs seem so short. I wish there were some extended remixes of some of their big hits. When I listen to their music I feel like I'm just getting really into the song, and then it's over. |
