From the Fresno (CA) Bee, Sunday, August 31:
"The first thing you notice about the Rutgers campus is that it's roughly the size of Greenland. ... Rutgers has an ecological preserve in the middle of the campus where they could have filmed 'The Last of the Mohicans.' ... "

That's my alma mater! Sorry, but there aren't enough hills to qualify as mountains to film the LOTM! But, New Jersey is definitely a place of contrasts, and Rutgers does have a lot to offer. There is a LOTM connection in NJ -- James Fennimore Cooper was born in Burlington, NJ. I've been meaning to go see his birthplace...
The article you cited goes on to talk about the Rutgers football stadium and how Rutgers football has become REALLY big. The RU coach is paid over $2 million per year, more than the university president! http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2008/07/rutgers_football_coach_getting.html
The university (which is a state school, not private) got rid of a number of sports, some of which produced Olympians, and all of the $$ from those sports went to football. Sports such as crew, swimming, diving, fencing, tennis, and wrestling, etc. are gone. www.dailytargum.com/media/storage/paper168/news/2008/09/02/Opinions/A.Eulogy.For.The.Cut.Varsity.Sports-3410685.shtml" target="_blank">http://media.www.dailytargum.com/media/storage/paper168/news/2008/09/02/Opinions/A.Eulogy.For.The.Cut.Varsity.Sports-3410685.shtml
The state cut higher ed spending, but is spending $30 million towards the Rutgers stadium.
It's New Jersey, but in terms of football, you'd think this was Texas!

Let's face it, when it comes to football, all colleges wear the same colors: green. |
