Found him..What a neat guy..We had a quick but entertaining talk. He's going to try to visit Wm. Henry and maybe Ti on his way down from Crown Point. I have a pic of him in the ranks of the French milice where he fit-in very well. The weather was spectacular. |

The Bateaux were very impressive. There was a sloop of war out on the passage. Check them out. A lot of work and detail in the flotilla. Also, please remember, Crown Point is the end of the world in NY State. Then, there is the Lake Monster "Champ" to worry about. A relative of the Loch Ness anomoly. Many years ago a friend of mine from Port Henry had a very scary encounter. A professional photographer, he missed the picture of a lifetime but it was near dark... For those interested, you can Google "Champ Legend" and read about the "monster". There are old Native American myths which mention the lake creature. Also, pic # 28 shows a curious hill -light color- in the background. It's a man-made slag heap from the iron mining in Mineville NY. Johnny Padres-1955 MVP of the Brooklyn Dodgers grew up there. I see him frequently at our local market. When you climb up out of the Crown Point fort, you are on bedrock and the striation marks from the last glacier (north to south) are underfoot which indicates which way the ice headed. Crown Point is a very different and wonderful place. |

There is something about this picture that just looks so 1750's.

Ah, yes. The blue checked shirt. It is the "outer limit" of what is documented for milice. I thought it was a good idea at the time, but I have since changed my mind. I was running out of clean shirts, so I saved my last white one for Sunday, since the nobility would be watching the battle. Some great pictures. I was hoping that someone would take some. I got out my camera Sunday afternoon when the camp closed and took a bunch, doing my Japanese tourist impression. I stayed over Sunday night and left for home on Monday morning. We had a nice sized group that did stay. I toured Ticonderoga and William Henry on Monday, then Fort Frederick, MD on Tuesday AM then Fort Dobbs, NC late that afternoon. So many forts, so little time! |

If you get a chance post a few pictures. With a little luck all those forts will be there next year. Might just be about time for another "trip north" ... |

If you are asking if that is me, the answer is no. I am neither that young-looking, nor quite that slim. (I wish!)
I have a ton of absolutely wonderful photos. I will post a few soon.
On another note... Fitz, it was really great to meet you and spend some time chatting! You are truly a fine gentleman... for a Fran-say.

The pictures came from Tim Cordell's link above. I don't know who she is. I haven't started unpacking the car yet, and the camera is somewhere in there. That was one heck of a trip!!! I met a LOT of great people, and I have to say that WW doesn't look anything like her avitar. I got all dressed up in my best clothes and walked over to the Brit camp to meet her only to find that she and her highlander guard had walked over the the French camp to meet me. And Seamus didn't show. But we finally met. And the direct descendant of Montcalm was there and reviewed some selected troupes. He got a real dose of American culture when during the middle of the review, Bubba in the Honey Wagon decided to pump the porta-johns. There was a great Amerindian camp and dance on Saturday night. And remember, this is were the REAL LOTM would have been, so it's sort of special. And sometime in the middle of Sunday night, or rather Monday AM, I woke up and went outside the tent. We were right beside the Champlain Bridge and just across the lake was Point a la Chevelure, where in 1609 Samuel Champlain and two others fired the first shots of a war between peoples, where Europeans sided with one nation of Indians against another, eventually leading to the F&I War. Frontenac walked those grounds and so did Montcalm, Levis, Bouganville and a whole lot more. It was a long time before I could get back to sleep. |

Good post Fitz. Always had similar outlook when seeing "square riggers". Especially back in '76 when about everyone of them visited this country for the anniversary. Went aboard a number f them in Boston, - both historic and beautiful. ... Walking the same ground, and seeing pretty much the same scenery/surroundings is tough to explain to others not as fortunate sometimes. Glad the weather held up so well, ... |

Fitz, I will take that comment and accept it as a compliment. Although I think George Washington was a handsome man, I would rather not look like him, thank you very much.
So... our beautiful and historic Wilderness of New York Colony reached right out and grabbed you, did it? I think it is incredible up there. Isn't that an amazing site?
And what did you think of Fort... ahem... Carillon? |

They are already getting ready for next year! They had a work day scheduled for last Saturday, and some people who were at Crown Point for Friday and Sunday went there to help. I drove to the top of Mt. Defiance and took some pics there as well. Carillon is quiet a place. They even has a sign the explained how the name came about instead of the BS in even the best history books. They have a great museum. I got some pics of an original gun that I have been wanting for a while. I have been told that the two best sites in the US are Ticonderoga and Niagara. I haven't seen Niagara, but Ti lived up to all expectations.
Maybe the Marquis will come back for that one, too. |

OK. This is me. This photo was taken at sunset on Saturday evening. I was standing on part of the ruins of Fort St. Frederic, which are right next to the Fort Crown Point ruins. And of course, that is the beautiful Lake Champlain behind me.

Fitz...The pic is from my wife's professional blog site "Journeys".. She took all of the photos Saturday and I schmoozed.(I mean, she took a picture of bread!). Thanks about your take on it. It does looks very 1750's. One thing about it that helps is that the grass is not mown.. Most of these battle sites take place on mown grass and that seems lessen the "period look". |

It was very good to meet you. I went to Fort WH on Monday and asked a couple of people if you were there. One was doing a Brit soldier and went to school in Binghamton, NY. Some sort of an omen there. Nice guy, though. |

For many years my role at Fort Wm Henry was as the evening "Interpreter/storyteller". I was not one of the "Guides". It was serious talks about everything that happened, how it related to our times, the archaeology, etc. etc. Due to the early fort closure in recent years:(10:00 P.M to 8 PM. to 6 PM.), I could not juggle my time to get there for the talks. I really enjoyed being a part of the scene there and I was always well received. I look forward to perhaps returning as I will be retired from corporate by next summer..I hope. |

wow! what a event,4 days spent in a killer place with great people. iam so happy with the weekend that ill be making the treck up to ft. william henrey next month. work be dammed. i was very impressed with the turnout of the combined milice. we all are looking really good now, still we had a few land pirates amoung us. the hightlight battle-wise for me was the afternoon tactical on friday. nothing like sniping around the brambles looking for english. lots of heavy fighting in the woods and on the roads around the outside on the fort. the battle on saturady morning was really good, more woods fighting that spilled out in the open killing field. the afternoon battle was a simple powder burner. sundays battle was just a simple ass kicking of the weak english force that bothered to showed up. i was fortunate enough to be standing next to the french commander daniel roy, for the last segment of the battle, nothing like a commander yelling the orders to load for the entire battlion, and firing a massive volley into the english ranks, they were swept off the field rather quickly. as far as camp life, saturday nights bon-fire and dance was somthing to behold. i almost never dance in publick, except when i used to see the grateful dead, but i was so caught up into the spirit of it, that i had to join in with my native brothers. a image i will carry forever. met up with fitz over the weekend, nice laid back dude. fitz a question for you, i noticed the gargossier you had, did you make that? did someone else? i would like to get my hads on one like that with the red leather flap and gold stamping on it. all in all a geat time, except the lack of loo's in the french camp, 6 for the hole camp...drop the ball on that one.... h-b |

The gargoussier was made by David Ledoyen. He was camped beside me and was with Louis Valiquette's unit. As far as I know, he is the only one who makes them. It is a top quality box. If you are interested, I can give you his email address.
It was great meeting you. I wish I hadn't been so tired on Saturday night. All I could do was lay in the grass near the fire and watch. We spent a lot of time running around during the Saturday afternoon battle. We were sent to protect the cannon near the woods on the right flank. They had seen some Brits concealed there, so we swept the whole area on the right. Age does make a difference! |
