Anybody planning on watching the new "Tudors" series on Showtime? It looks like their answer to HBO's Rome--by which I mean a "historical" drama with great costumes and lots of gratuitous sex and violence.
Looks like it has some good eye candy, for ladies and gents alike. For us ladies, there's Callum Blue and Henry Cavill, not to mention King Henry himself, Jonathan Rhys Meyers. Obviously before the fat, bearded stage famous from paintings....

I saw a preview for this series at the theater. Makes me wish I had Showtime. If anybody's planning on watching it, let me know if it's good. I'll have to see it when it comes out on DVD next year.

Hmmm . . . dunno. I did an IMDB search (ah! the exciting life of a penniless grad student on Spring Break!) and didn't come up with anything. Which guy? Rhys Meyers? Just curious!
Wait. Back again. I just decided to add to this post instead of making an all new one.
Do you mean Velvet Goldmine, maybe? Haven't seen it, but it's one of my sister's favs. Rhys Meyers plays a 70's "glam rock star" named Brian Slade. (Yes, I IMDB'ed it . . . again. I've nothing else to do!) |

I just know him as the guy from "Bend It Like Beckam" and the "Elvis" mini-series.
Just noticed Duncan Donuts is the other guy. What part does he play? Never seen him in anything other than the movie "Holes" which is quite good. |

Do you mean maybe The Hole? I just got that movie from Netflix but haven't watched it yet. A while back I saw another of your posts saying it's a good movie, so I thought I'd try it. 
Have you seen Sleepy Hollow with Johnny Depp? Steven Waddington is the guy married to the midwife in the movie...can't remember the character's name. He's also Ivanhoe in the BBC version of Ivanhoe that came out sometime in the 90's. Those are the only other movies I've seen with him in them, though he's apparently been in quite a few films.
What can I say?  I'm addicted to IMDB!  |

Where is my brain today???? Yes Red, I did mean "The Hole" not "Holes" which is a very good movie also. You should enjoy it as it has all kinds of twists and turns. Watched it with my teenage daughter who loved it (The Hole that is).
Yes, I have seen Sleepy Hollow with JD and do recall SW being in it now that you bring it up, so I guess I have seen him in something else afterall. |

I finally got around to watching "The Hole." It was a very twisty-turny movie, as you said. Scary ending too, I thought. The kind that leaves you with a creepy sort of feeling.
On a different, only tangentially related note: I saw another movie with SW in it, called "Carrington." I got it from Netflix because it stars Emma Thompson (whom I really like), and was surprised to find that SW plays her husband in the movie. I think it came out only a couple years after LOTM, but SW looks totally different in it. (Duh...no powdered wig and red coat does tend to make a difference.) I tried to find a good pic, but this is the only one I could come up with. It's kinda blurry.

Anyway, I wouldn't really recommend the movie. The acting is good, but the whole story is just so depressing. Only see it if you like films about bohemian artists with restless love lives.

| Last night I watched the first episode and half of the second one On Demand. It was really good and I loved it. Now that "Rome" is over I needed another "fix" so to speak and this is definitely it. SW plays the Duke of Buckingham and does not fair too well in this one either. Don't wish to spoil it but he and Henry do not see eye to eye. I look forward to seeing more of this series. I was happy to see Sam Neill in there too as the dear "Cardinal". He plays the part well. In the early stages yet but I am hooked. Anyone else been watching this series??? |

| I finished the second episode and loved it too. I wish you could see it now Red and not have to wait for Netflix. I guess subscribing to the Premium channels pays off when we get rewarded with great shows like this one. Roll on Sunday for another installment. JRM plays the young King Henry very well and I love the actress who plays Catherine of Aragon. Anne Boleyn has the most extraordinary eyes and SW did a great job as the Duke. I think whomever cast this series did an excellent job as the actors all have to have "chemistry" onscreen and they sure do in this one. As I mentioned before, Sam Neill is perfect for Cardinal Wolsey, great acting on his and all parts concerned. I love having On Demand as it gives extras on there. I watched interviews with the cast and writers, directors etc. Just brilliant. |

OMG! Showtime's website has the first two episodes available online! I watched both last night after seeing your posts about them, IG. Fantastic! I'll be curious to see how different the internet version is from the one that airs on TV, though: there is a message about "edited for content" before each episode and there were definitely some blurred-out bosoms in episode #1; a few spots in episode #2 looked a little jerky, like something had been spliced out.  Trouble now is that ONLY episodes 1 and 2 will be available online, just enough to get me hooked before I have to wait a year to see the rest on Netflix.  At least I got to watch the first two, I guess....
I agree that Sam Neill was great as the Cardinal; he has a subtly clever look about him, I think, that's perfect for the role. I was also impressed with JRM as King Henry. I've never seen him in anything else and thought he might be too young and cute for the part, but he actually fits it quite well. I'm curious as to why the casting people decided to have Catherine of Aragon look so much older than Henry, though. I don't think they were even ten years apart, in reality.
I see what you mean about Buckingham and Henry not seeing eye to eye.  Yikes! SW does do a good job with the duke. He plays those swaggering, over-confident characters well, I think.
It's funny: ever since I first saw the show advertised, my husband has laughed at my obsession with wanting to watch it. He came in about midway through episode 1 last night, though, and not only watched with me but also complained bitterly when I told him that only the first two episodes will be online. He's totally hooked now, as am I.  Alas! I'll be waiting a while to see the others. In the meantime, I can watch episodes 1 and 2 online whenever I want, if I need a little King Henry fix.  |

| I am so happy you got to see it Red, if only the first two episodes. Poor Buckingham though, the end he came too and his daughter looking on. I felt for him deeply and SW did an amazing job. I just wish he had been around longer in the series. I can't wait to see Henry and Anne Boleyn "get down and dirty". Wasn't Catherine of Aragon much older than Henry? I love the actress who portrays her and her accent is devine. I don't know how you will stand it having to wait so long to see the rest. No friends with Showtime? Come on over to my house and we'll watch together...sorry for teasing. |

Still watching this show, Irish? Let me know how it is. I saw a commercial for it the other day and felt horribly teased. 
On a totallly random note, I happened to see about 5 minutes of that show Ugly Betty on TV the other day. I'm not sure what the story is behind it, but Betty was wearing a "B" pendant that looks just like the one made famous by Anne Boleyn. Anybody who watches Betty know the connection? Just curious! |

Yes still watching the show and loving it. Only a couple of episodes left this season. Henry is pursuing his attempt to get his marriage to Catherine annulled but to no avail. Wolsey is in the "hot seat" right now. Great acting by all concerned.
Never seen Ugly Betty. Too many other shows to keep up with. Down to the last few episodes of The Sopranos so enjoying that very much. Also tonight is the big night. Find out who wins this seasons Dancing With The Stars. I am rooting for Apolo to win. I have been voting for him. He is very small but cute. Reminds me of Jason Gedrick a very sexy, handsome actor who just had a stint on Desperate Housewives. Unfortunately, no longer on the show. The finale last Sunday was good but surprising ending. Can't wait until next season. So many shows, so little time. |

| Hey, I remember Jason Gedrick from "Murder One." That was a good show, back in the day. Ever watch it? I think it only lasted a season or so. Also starred Patricia Clarkson and Stanley Tucci. |

| I first remember him from The Last Don and then they made The Last Don 2 and then there was a great Mafia series called "Falcone" that never took off but I sure enjoyed it. He was great on Desperate Housewives as "Rick" the chef. Great looking guy and Apolo is like a miniature version of him. |

Well, I'm bringing back this older topic only because the second season of the Tudors starts March 30th on Showtime!! I can't wait!! I finally, this past weekend, sat down and watched the entire first season. I loved every minute of it! Very well put together and not to mention the cast was perfect. I was sad that Steve Waddington's part was so short. I would have looked forward to seeing more from him. I had heard so many good things about this show but just didn't have the time to sit down and watch it. I finally found some time! So just wanted to inform you folks of the new season starting!

Then I watched the first episode last night. I don't get Showtime, but get On Demand, which shows just about anything the premium channels carry. A continuation of last year. Seamless.
It's a good series, but somehow Rhys Meyers just doesn't look like Henry VIII. The makeup and wardrobe's fault I think, but nevertheless it is just wrong.
Henry in the year 1520 at 29 years of age. Note the hair style.
And eleven years later. Put on some weight and a different haircut.

| They are basing his character on the younger Henry VIII, before he got old and fat. They say he was once a very healthy, vibrant, athletic, young man. Apparently also with a healthy sex drive for those of you that watched the series, lol! |

| I watched the first episode of the new season On Demand last night and it was excellent. No wonder I missed this series. Funny though that they had it On Demand already as the new Season does not start until March 30 or did they start it earlier? Thanks for mentioning it was on there already Fitz. That O'Toole as Pope Paul 111 sure had a "potty mouth" I thought. Looking forward to seeing more. The preview of "things to come" looked great. Lots of action indeed. |

This IS the young Henry. In 1520. 29 years old. Not old or fat. At the time period of the series, Henry would have been 10 years older. But the guy in the series looks nothing like him, in either wardrobe or makeup. It think if those involved with the series had spent 15 min. looking at period artwork, it would have been a MUCH better production.
The second picture above is really the "Henry" of the series. Starting to put on a little weight, looking more round-faced and middle aged.
