Well Spring is here and the F&I Encampment at Fort Toulouse was last weekend, and despite the predictions of bad weather, we only got a little rain on Saturday morning. Unfortunately, a lot of others believed the weatherman. There was a good turnout of Marines, but no Brits. I guess they don't like losing. But there was a good contingent of Seminoles there and some Cherokee and Creek. François, the Commandant, asked the Milice to fight with the Indians, so we did. Nothing wrong with that, I just hate it was against the French! Of course we lost, but that’s to be expected. Big Del and Little Del were there (those of you who were at the Gathering in 2004 will remember them) and say they will be at the Gathering this year. For those of you who live anywhere nearby (Wetumpka, AL), you really should try to make the Encampment. Frontier Days in Nov. is good, but the one in April is just better. Nothing like sitting in the fort late at night with a fire going and drinking a little Cabernet. Or a lot.

The Seminoles must be experienced. I think that the swamps must have an effect on them. As soon as they got there, they threw a "human" head in the grass beside their camp and splashed some "blood" around it. It was said that on Saturday night "Swamp Queen" made an appearance, but I guess I missed that one. Del had a blond scalp hanging from the barrel of his fusil which would have done credit to Alice. As I said earlier, blond scalps are much in demand. And I even got to try out some of my French, but I have a LONG way to go. There was even the mandatory piper (seems every event, large or small, must have a piper), but in addition to "Scotland the Brave" he played "La Blonde". I guess that's the first time I have ever heard it played on the pipes.

Do you think that with blonde scalps being much in demand, the piper was hired to lure in blondes--so as to increase the supply? Practical Economics at work! |

| Yes, blonds are much in demand. For the scalps, to take as a prisoner, to sell to the French. Darker haired women just don't bring as much. Supply and demand, I guess. |
